Abstract More than a half of residents in some capital cities of the former Socialist block live in large-scale residential areas that had been built from the 1950s to the 1980s. The public space satisfaction in the areas is low, the residents rarely appropriate the yards and streets of the housing complexes. The aim of the paper is to provide a framework for the understanding of residents’ assessment of public space and its relation to the appropriation; the framework can be used for the development of building or landscape architecture projects focused at reconstruction of the public space. Public Space Quality Model is generated in the paper. The model includes three spatial categories that are defined by metrical values, configuration components and dominant spatial elements – elements that determine size, category, and the structure of a space. Using the observation method in the residential areas of the former East Berlin, the research concludes that the model demonstrates the highest precision of predictability of the appropriation intensity of the public space when the green structure is used as the dominant spatial element. A method accompanying the model is presented in the paper that permits to use specific types of trees or shrubs in particular distancing and concrete arrangements to create spaces of high, medium, or low appropriation level in large-scale residential areas.

Abstract Background. The recent pursuit of energy conservation, emission reduction, and sustainable development are the demanding aspect in green building construction. Green building concept becomes important in the current building life cycle to mitigate environmental issues. In this way, a strategy for surveying the performance of a green structure is attractive. Consequently, this investigation intends to build up a methodical methodology for distinguishing the elements that decide the effective development and activity of a green structure and makes a technique for assessing green building execution.Methods. To accomplish these objectives, a comprehensive literature review was first conducted, followed by determining the performance of a green building to create a qualitative fuzzy set of performance metrics. A cloud model was used to analyze the factor hierarchy using weighted entropy to quantify the performance of a green building. Ultimately, an inside and out contextual analysis was led to check the exact discoveries.Results. A green building performance index that was created based on expert evaluations and weighted the indexes subjectively and objectively. Likewise, a standard cloud yardstick was also created in the comprehensive cloud. The sustainability of the building was qualified and assessed by comparing cloud images with the standard cloud. It has been analyzed that, the execution measurements and persuasive components make appraisal models for a green building. This investigation can help the development business to distinguish and manage issues that emerge in building green buildings. The coherent framework that the researchers have developed for assessing green buildings provides a solid foundation for further research into sustainability and green building operation. The result indicates that the industry acquires benefit by suggesting effective measures that can be implemented in all stages of green building construction.Conclusion. The analysis results demonstrated that this investigation builds up a novel exhibition appraisal of a green building which makes a target establishment for assessing building execution. Additionally, the findings are helpful for industry specialists to improve green building construction. Besides, the outcomes give significant data to governments and other invested individuals to create target models for green building development programs.

Hot and dry climate and air pollution is a growing problem in urban areas, and this can have an adverse impact on life and health of urban residents. One of the ways to protect people from this hazard is the use of urban green or street greenery. However, its implementation can be problematic in highly urbanized areas. This paper presents a concept of the green structure (GS), designed, and is still being developed, by Adam Kalinowski where cooling efficiency is based on the synergy of shade and evapotranspiration. The GS that could be used as street furniture, small architecture form or a public utility structure intended to protect people and objects from an adverse urban environment, at the same time providing pleasant and healthy microclimate inside. The pilot project-the first application of the GS in the urban environment-is presented and the results of short-term measurements of temperature and humidity are provided and analyzed. Moreover, a simple dynamic simulation of the GS performance in courtyards has been conducted. The obtained results show the decrease of the perceived temperature within this structure. Depending on climate type, an average potential reduction of Universal Thermal Comfort Index (UTCI) and mean radiant temperature (Tmrt), caused by the GS in a courtyard case study, is 5–8 °C and 17–29 °C, respectively. Performed simulation also confirms that TRNSYS software is an appropriate tool for simple outdoor microclimate analysis. Further research to develop this concept, increase its performance and customize it for different applications are proposed.
