Politicians’ individual traits can influence policy outcomes. A local mayor has authority over the budget process and can affect the municipal budget allocation. This study empirically examined whether the mayor’s gender affected the gendered budget in Korean cities between 2016 and 2020. Across various econometric designs, our results revealed little evidence that mayoral gender (women, in this case) affects the formulation and execution of the gendered budget. The results imply that the effects of female representation through a female leader are dependent on various socioeconomic contexts.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to capture the journey of the first female leader in sports management in her country in the south-east Asian region for their National Sport and the values and behaviors enabling her to achieve it. Design/methodology/approach The study uses a mixed-methods case study design, quantitative and qualitative outcome measures, to assess the career progression of the first female executive director of a national sporting organization in her country, namely, BWN and her involvement in a two-week intensive sports management, leadership and development program. Findings A professional and courageous approach to identify and implement honest and evidence-based solutions were key for BWN’s success. BWN complemented professionalism with soft skills, clear communication and an outcome-based approach to challenging situations, successfully influencing change within her national sporting organization. This female leader is an inspiring role model for other women and her professionalism her most influential value driving innovation in sports management and organizational change. The positive impact she had in her community highlights the significant contributions female leaders can have within the sports leadership context, given the opportunity and scope to do so. Originality/value For the first time in her country, the unsolicited and unprecedented evidence-based approach, professionalism and proactivity assisted BWN with her colleagues accepting her as the first woman on the executive board of her national sporting body of one of the most celebrated national sports. Breaking the mold with unexpected (positive) behavior might be the secret to further breakthroughs for women in sports management.

Study level/applicability The case provides a great illustration of women leadership in crisis times. A failed merger forced a deep review of the firm strategy and a realization that the legacy leadership arrangement was not optimal anymore. The hustand-and-wife team ended up swapping executive positions, with Charlotte resolutely taking on the CEO position. Subject area The case is designed as an integrative case looking simultaneously at key subjects such as leadership, entrepreneurship and management of a fast growing service firm, strategy as applied to IT consulting and finally gender studies, with the possibility to discuss the impact of gender roles. Case overview The case investigates Charlotte's efforts at building an original Search Engine Optimization firm in Seattle, progressively taking control from her husband to save the firm from bad strategic decisions. Expected learning outcomes The case is written to convey the emotional rollercoaster lived by Charlotte and key decisions she had to make as the leader of this fast growing data analytics firm. Learning outcomes focus on what is expected of a leader in such situation, in particular a female leader in a male-dominated technology environment. In this paper, the authors want to compare two different styles of leadership in different continents during COVID-19. In this article, the governance in the form of leadership of two leaders one from India and another from New Zealand have been compared to handle the situation of COVID-19. The authors are comparing two different governance based on leadership theories. This article suggests the even though the governance of New Zealand was in the hand of the female leader but she effectively controlled the COVID-19 pandemic. Indian government was facing too much of internal and border issues which diverted the attention to handle COVID-19.

This chapter explores the impact of motherhood on the professional identities of female leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic. It focuses on five principles related to parenting a young child that one might apply to one's experiences as a female leader during the COVID-19 pandemic: 1) listen with your eyes, 2) recognize that not knowing is part of growing, 3) release the need for perfection, 4) engage in restorative rituals, and 5) focus on those things that are within your control. It also expands upon the notion that creating an emotional climate where faculty, staff, and administrators can bring their “whole selves” to work would be beneficial, both during a pandemic and beyond.

Women leaders as one form of emancipation, apparently already existed from the past. It can be found in ancient manuscripts. Ancient manuscripts can be our bridge in communicating with the past. Through the ancient manuscript we can know how life in the past happened. Therefore, ancient manuscripts should be kept and cared for, and preserved their contents in order to be a contribution of insight today. The values contained in the ancient manuscript are varied, one of which is the value of leadership. The value of female leadership is found in Hikayat Pandu and the manuscript of Dewi Maleka that will be the corpus of this study. The value of leadership or the image of leadership that serves as the basis of classification is Astabrata teaching. The aim of this research is to compare the leadership image of the female leaders from the Hikayat Pandu, the goddess Lara Amis and the female leaders of the goddess Malacca script. The method of research used is the comparative literary method. This research resulted in a comparison of leadership imagery between female leader figures derived from the Malay version (Hikayat Pandu) and Javanese version (Dewi Maleka) script. It can therefore be concluded that there are similarities and differences in the image of female leadership between Dewi Lara Amis and Dewi Melaka. Research into the comparison of leadership imagery, especially on female leaders has not been done in Hikayat Pandu and the manuscript goddess Maleka. Thus, this study presents a new discussion that can be an additional knowledge for readers.  --- Pemimpin wanita sebagai salah satu bentuk emansipasi, ternyata sudah ada dari masa lalu. Hal tersebut dapat ditemukan dalam naskah kuno. Naskah kuno dapat menjadi jembatan kita dalam berkomunikasi dengan masa lalu. Melalui naskah kuno tersebut kita dapat mengetahui bagaimana kehidupan di masa lalu itu terjadi. Oleh karena itu, naskah kuno sudah seharusnya dijaga dan dirawat, serta dilestarikan isinya supaya dapat menjadi sumbangan wawasan di zaman sekarang. Nilai-nilai yang terkandung dalam naskah kuno beraneka ragam, salah satunya ialah nilai kepemimpinan. Nilai kepemimpinan wanita ditemukan pada naskah Hikayat Pandu dan naskah Dewi Maleka yang akan menjadi korpus pada penelitian ini. Nilai kepemimpinan atau citra kepemimpinan yang dijadikan landasan sebagai dasar klasifikasi yaitu ajaran astabrata. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah melakukan perbandingan citra kepemimpinan dari tokoh pemimpin wanita dari naskah Hikayat Pandu yaitu tokoh Dewi Rara Amis dan pemimpin wanita dari naskah Dewi Maleka yaitu tokoh Dewi Maleka. Metode penelitian yang digunakan ialah metode deskriptif analisis dan teori yang digunakan ialah teori sastra bandingan. Penelitian ini menghasilkan perbandingan citra kepemimpinan antara tokoh pemimpin wanita yang berasal dari naskah versi Melayu (Hikayat Pandu) dan naskah versi Jawa (Dewi Maleka). Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat persamaan dan perbedaan citra kepemimpinan wanita antara Dewi Rara Amis dan Dewi Maleka. Persamaan dan perbedaannya, yaitu Dewi Maleka memiliki delapan klasifikasi dalam astabrata, sedangkan Dewi Rara Amis hanya memiliki lima klasifikasi dalam astabrata antara lain ambeging surya, ambeging rembulan, ambeging angin, ambeging banyu, dan ambeging bumi.

Female politicians are assumed to suffer from gender bias in the political arena but existing research finds little evidence of an electoral cost to being a female candidate. Existing studies, however, have focused mostly on candidates, not leaders for top political office. Also, most evidence on this topic comes from a small number of countries. Using data from the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems Integrated Module Dataset, covering 600 leaders in 46 states globally over 20 years, we show that even though female party leaders are, on average, more liked than male leaders, this advantage is limited to experienced politicians. Furthermore, we demonstrate that despite this popularity advantage, parties that have a female leader do not appear to benefit from their leadership electorally.<br /><br />Key messages<br /><ul><li>We find that female leaders are, on average, more liked than male leaders.</li><br /><li>This popularity advantage of female leaders is limited to experienced politicians.</li><br /><li>Citizens are not more likely to vote for a party with a female leader.</li></ul>
