The kinetics of polymerization of isoprene in benzene initiated with ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-, hexyl-, octyl-, 2-butyl-, 3-hexyl-, 2-octyl-, and 6-methylheptyllithium was investigated. With the exception of ethyllithium , a distinct initial induction period decreasing steeply with increasing concentration of the initiator was observed for all n-alkyllithium initiators. No induction period was observed with the other initiators. The reaction orders decreased at the highest concentrations for most of the initiators, sometimes even to negative values. In the case of ethyl-, 2-butyl- and octyl-lithium this phenomenon has not been observed in the range investigated.

The kinetics of the transformation of benzonitrile oxide in dilute sulfuric acid into benzohydroxamic acid have been followed by u.v. spectrophotometry at a temperature near room temperature. A mechanism is proposed on the basis of the effects of substituents and sulfuric acid concentration. The rate profile for the hydrolysis of benzohydroxamic acid in hot dilute sulfuric acid has been obtained. The results of these studies are applied to the detailed mechanism of the Meyer rearrangement – hydrolysis of phenylnitromethane in acid.

A new improved method is proposed for the leaching and extraction of niobium from a low-grade refractory niobium–tantalum ore.The ore was roasted and decomposed with concenrated H2SO4 then leached with dilute sulfuric acid. The effects of various factors, such as roasting temperature and time, acid to ore mass ratios,as well as particle size, on the dissolution kinetics of niobium were comprehensively investigated. The optimal conditions were particle size-38μm, roasting temperature 300°C,reacting time 2h and acid to ore mass ratio 1:1. The roasting residue reacted for 2 h with sulfuric acid in the ore/acid weight ratio of 3:1 at 90°C, the niobium was recoveried as high as 90.3%.
