This paper proposes an enhanced cultural algorithm to solve the short-term generation scheduling of hydrothermal systems problem, in which differential evolution is embedded into a cultural algorithm and applies two knowledge sources to influence the variation operator of differential evolution and couples with simple selection criteria based on feasibility rules and heuristic search strategies to handle constraints in the cultural algorithm effectively. A test hydrothermal system is used to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. Results are compared with those of other optimization methods reported in the literature. It is shown that the proposed method is capable of yielding higher quality solutions.

In recent years, the foreign exchange (FOREX) market has attracted quite a lot of scrutiny from researchers all over the world. Due to its vulnerable characteristics, different types of research have been conducted to accomplish the task of predicting future FOREX currency prices accurately. In this research, we present a comprehensive review of the recent advancements of FOREX currency prediction approaches. Besides, we provide some information about the FOREX market and cryptocurrency market. We wanted to analyze the most recent works in this field and therefore considered only those papers which were published from 2017 to 2019. We used a keyword-based searching technique to filter out popular and relevant research. Moreover, we have applied a selection algorithm to determine which papers to include in this review. Based on our selection criteria, we have reviewed 39 research articles that were published on “Elsevier”, “Springer”, and “IEEE Xplore” that predicted future FOREX prices within the stipulated time. Our research shows that in recent years, researchers have been interested mostly in neural networks models, pattern-based approaches, and optimization techniques. Our review also shows that many deep learning algorithms, such as gated recurrent unit (GRU) and long short term memory (LSTM), have been fully explored and show huge potential in time series prediction.

An experimental study is described which examines the use of telephone group counseling for the visually impaired. The experimental group differed significantly from controls after treatment on measures of social involvement but not on measures of depression or agitation. Subjects’ achievement of self-selected goals were related to the expectations of their support network. Findings suggest that group telephone counseling can effect positive changes in the physical and social behavior of visually impaired people.

Single mature intermediate villi from term placentas after normal gestation and vaginal or cesarian delivery were identified microscopically and mounted in a bath for conventional micro-electrode studies. With the application of strict selection criteria, the following observations on electrical potential difference (PD) were made. 1) With the tissue bathed in Earle's medium (37 degrees C) the PD across the syncytiotrophoblast microvillus membrane with respect to the bath was not normally distributed. The median PD was -22 mV (range -12 to -60 mV, n = 200). This fell to -6 mV after prior incubation for 4 h with cyanide (3 mM) or iodoacetate (2 mM) but was not altered by short-term application of these agents or by 0.1 mM ouabain. Substituting Na+ in Earle's medium with choline had no effect on PD, but replacing Cl- with gluconate caused a depolarization of 6 mV (P < 0.002). Increasing KCl in the bath fluid revealed an apparently low microvillus membrane K+ conductance. The low microvillus membrane PD may reflect a low Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase activity and/or a low membrane permeability to K+. 2) The transtrophoblast PD measured by insertion and withdrawal of the electrode was significantly different from zero [P < 0.003, median -3 mV (range 0 to -15 mV), n = 11]; and PD measured by insertion of the electrode into the villus core and beyond was -6 mV (significantly different from zero P < 0.003, range -2.5 to -10 mV, n = 6). If a similar PD were to exist in vivo, it could have a significant influence on ion transport across the placenta at term.

Background: To determine which short-term changes on clinical scales including the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), Timed 25-Foot Walk (T25FW), 9-Hole Peg test (9HPT) and Guy’s Neurological Disability Scale (GNDS) are most predictive of long-term outcome of disability as rated by the EDSS in progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). Methods: From a longitudinal database, all progressive patients, both primary (PP) and secondary (SP), were selected on the basis of at least two complete examinations being available within a time interval of 1–2 years (short-term change). All patients who fulfilled the selection criteria were invited for a third visit after an interval of at least 3 years (long-term outcome). We used ordinal logistic regression to see which early changes were most predictive of the long-term EDSS. Results: 181 patients fulfilled the selection criteria. Early change on EDSS and T25FW were the best predictors of long-term EDSS; both were significant predictors in a ‘single predictor’ model. Early EDSS change was a slightly stronger single predictor (R2 0.38, Wald χ2 42.65, p < 0.001) compared with early T25FW change (R2 0.27, Wald χ2 12.35, p < 0.001). Adding early T25FW change to early EDSS change in a ‘combined predictor’ model improved prediction ( p = 0.036). Conclusion: Both early change on EDSS and T25FW predict long-term EDSS with comparable strength. Early change on T25FW adds significant independent information and improves the prediction model with early EDSS change only. Therefore we support the use of early T25FW examinations in future clinical trials in progressive MS.

Previous research has provided evidence that females are generally the more selective sex in humans. Moreover, both sexes have been found to be more selective in long-term mating compared to short-term mating. In this study, we have examined the effects of sex, mating strategy (preferred relationship length) and their interaction on mate preferences (i.e., mate selection criteria) in an egalitarian Nordic society, namely Norway. The study sample consisted of 1,000 individuals, 417 of whom were male and 583 female respondents. According to our findings, men were more selective in physical appearance, whereas women were more selective in all the other mate preferences (e.g., understanding, dominant, kind, intellectual etc.). The respondents that were seeking short-term relationships had higher preference for physical appearance, humorousness and sociability. On the other hand, the respondents that were seeking long-term relationships were more selective in most of the other mate preferences (i.e., understanding, kind, cultivated, domestic, reliable, and similar). Interestingly, no interaction effect was found between sex and mating strategy in that differences between long-term and short-term seekers in mate preferences did not change depending on sex. This suggests that men and women value the same traits in short-term relationships.
