Metal Matrix Composites (MMC’s) consist of either pure metal or an alloy as the matrix material, while the reinforcement generally a ceramic material. Aluminium composites are considered as one of the advanced engineering materials which have attracted more and more benefits. Now a days these materials are widely used in space shuttle, commercial airlines, electronic substrates, bicycles, automobiles, etc., Among the MMC’s aluminium composites are predominant in use due to their low weight and high strength. The key features of MMC’s are specific strength and stiffness, excellent wear resistance, high electrical and thermal conductivity. Hence, it is proposed to form a new class of composite. Al 7075 alloy reinforced with Graphite Powder and Bagasse ash to form MMC using Stir casting. The MMC is obtained for different composition of Graphite powder and Bagasse ash particulates (varying Graphite powder with constant Bagasse ash and varying Bagasse ash with constant Graphite powder percentage). The test specimens are prepared as per ASTM standard size by turning and facing operations to conduct tensile tests, compression tests and hardness tests. The specimens are tested for tensile strength and compression strength as per ASTM standard E8 by using universal testing machine and hardness as per ASTM standard E10 at different loads by using Brinell hardness testing machine. Through the results, it is concluded that the MMC obtained has got better tensile strength, compression strength and hardness properties when compared to non-heat-treated Al 7075 alone.

The present investigation involves studying the mechanical properties of the fabricated aluminium 7075 hybrid metal matrix composites reinforced with various weight % of SiC and Al2 O3 particulates by stir casting method. The Al 7075 hybrid metal matrix composites specimen were fabricated using L9 orthogonal array. The mechanical properties like Brinell Harness (BHN), Rockwell Hardness (HRC) and impact loads were experimented. The mechanical properties like hardness and impact loads have improved with the increase in weight percentage of SiC and Al2O3 particulates in the hybrid aluminium matrix.

Recently, the attention paid to Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) has increased markedly. In particular, particle-reinforced MMCs are outstanding due to superior specific properties and their wear resistance. In order to further improve material utilization, recent investigations with local reinforcements in highly stressed component sections, the so-called Functionally Graded Metal Matrix Composites (FGMMC), are concerned. The production of such FGMMC was realized with composite peening - a modified process on the basis of micro shot peening. Due to this solid-phase process, ceramic particles can be introduced into regions close to the boundary layer. As preliminary studies on tin show, ceramic particles can be introduced close to the specimen surface even at room temperature. By varying process parameters, in particular by increasing the temperature, the penetration depth of the particles can be significantly increased. In case of aluminium as base material, an input of particles into the surface could be observed at a process temperature of 150 °C. The combination of aluminium with reinforced ceramic particles makes this process interesting for lightweight, wear-resistant and cyclically highly stressed structural components. Using composite peening to produce FGMMCs is a novel, economic approach.
