Abrasive composite bulks consisting of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) grains, Cu-Sn-Ti alloy and graphite particles were sintered at the heating temperature of 920 °C for the dwell time of 30 min. The bending strength of abrasive composite bulks was measured. The interfacial microstructure and the phases were characterized. In addition, the dressing experiment was carried out to detect the self-sharpening behavior of the composite bulks. Results obtained show that the abrasive composite bulks in this investigation give higher bending strength than that of the vitrified abrasive wheels. The compounds of TiN, TiB2were formed and the PCBN grains were embedded firmly. Strong fixing of the bulks to the PCBN grains led to the breakage of the PCBN grains when the abrasive composite bulks fractured. The intergranular fracture mode of the PCBN grains ensured the self-sharpening effect of the grains.

Inconel 718 is a Ni superalloy widely used in high responsibility components requiring excellent mechanical properties at high temperature and elevated corrosion resistance. Inconel 718 is a difficult to cut material due to the elevated temperature generated during cutting, its low thermal conductivity, and the strong abrasive tool wear during cutting process. Finishing operations should ensure surface integrity of the component commonly requiring the use of hard metal tools with sharp tool edges and moderate cutting speeds. Polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) tools recently developed an enhanced toughness suitable for these final operations. This paper focuses on the study of PCBN tools performance in finishing turning of Inconel 718. Several inserts representative of different manufacturers were tested and compared to a reference carbide tool. The evolution of tool wear, surface roughness, and cutting forces was analyzed and discussed. PCBN tools demonstrated their suitability for finishing operations, presenting reasonable removal rates and surface quality.

The kinematic characteristics, grinding force, surface quality of workpiece surface, and wear of abrasive particles were studied by theoretical analysis and experimental study on the single cubic boron nitride abrasive particles under ultrasonic-assisted high-speed grinding. Under the condition of the same grinding parameters, the motion characteristics and the grinding forces of the two machining modes of general grinding and ultrasonic-assisted grinding are compared and analyzed. Research shows that the ultrasonic vibration is applied in the common external circular grinding on grinding particle movement characteristics changed obviously, grinding particle trajectory of variable length, cutting groove width wider, thereby improving the grinding efficiency and the grinding removal rate; ultrasonic assisted under high speed grinding, the grinding force is higher than that of common grinding force is small, efficiency of grinding under ultrasonic processing mode is much higher than ordinary grinding, the surface quality of the workpiece has improved markedly.
