This research concerns the topic of Land Use and Transport Interaction (LUTI) models. In particular, the patterns between residential households’ location and mobility choices are analyzed and simulated. The attributes that influence household residential location choices belong to four categories: socioeconomic and mobility attributes of households and/or of their components; land use; real-estate market; transport system. The paper presents the results of a pilot study on households’ location and mobility patterns in the metropolitan area of Reggio Calabria (Southern Italy). The pilot study is divided into two stages. In the first stage, a survey allowed to collect information and identify existing patterns about residential and mobility choices of a sample of households. In the second stage, a residential location model is proposed and some preliminary calibrations are presented in a prototypal way. The pilot study could be extended and improved in terms of spatial extension and sample dimension in order to allow a complete specification-calibration-validation process of the model. The model development can support the land use-transport planning process in the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria.

Residential location is thought to influence people’s well-being, but different individuals may value residential areas differently. We examined how life satisfaction and personality traits are geographically distributed within the UK London metropolitan area, and how the strength of associations between personality traits and life satisfaction vary by residential location (i.e., personality–neighborhood interactions). Residential area was recorded at the level of postal districts (216 districts, n = 56,019 participants). Results indicated that the strength of associations between personality traits and life satisfaction depended on neighborhood characteristics. Higher openness to experience was more positively associated with life satisfaction in postal districts characterized by higher average openness to experience, population density, and ethnic diversity. Higher agreeableness and conscientiousness were more strongly associated with life satisfaction in postal districts with lower overall levels of life satisfaction. The associations of extraversion and emotional stability were not modified by neighborhood characteristics. These findings suggest that people’s life satisfaction depends, in part, on the interaction between individual personality and particular features of the places they live.

AbstractThis paper studies the influence that music exerts on emotions in students belonging to the stage of Compulsory Secondary Education and Baccalaureate classroom. For this, a quasi-experimental design is carried out in which 104 students from a public institute of the metropolitan area of Valencia are exposed to a musical audition and the change in their emotions is measured with the PANAS test. It is intended to demonstrate that music is a valid tool for the emotional improvement of students, as well as reinforcing the importance of this subject in the curriculum. This research was born due to the lack of presence of the emotional factor in the classrooms and is based on studies carried out by a large number of authors who certify the importance of emotions in daily life, as well as the possible benefits they offer in the student academic life.

Mode choice decision of individuals plays a vital role in transportation planning. Individual travel behaviour models can be improved by extending the set of influencing variables used for modelling. In a developing country like India, students contribute a major share of total travel demand especially during morning and evening peak hours of traffic; whose individual travel characteristics are very less studied by transportation professionals. This paper presents exploratory and statistical analysis of mode choice behaviour of students in Kochi City, India. The socio-demographic characteristics, activity-travel behaviour as well as residential location characteristics of students during a usual working day is collected using activity-travel survey data, in Kochi Municipal Corporation. Preliminary analysis gives details on daily activity-travel pattern, mode choice preferences and other particulars of commuters in the study area. Statistical models were developed for understanding the factors affecting mode choice decision and separate mode choice models are also developed for different categories of students. Simulation of choice probabilities over different attributes is also done to identify the potential policy variables that can promote the use of sustainable modes.
