The following mosquitos should be added to the list given in my earlier paper on this subject (Bull. Ent. Res. 28, 1937, pp. 405—407).1. Anopheles elutus, Edwards.The larvae are found in the same habitats as those of A. maculipennis, but seem to show a greater preference for waters near the sea-shore. A. elutus appears to be considerably rarer in Corfu than A. maculipennis, but sufficient data are not yet to hand to settle this question.2. Anopheles plumbeus, Stephens.Not common. I have obtained the larvae from the rot-holes of oak, elm and white poplar, but never so far from those of olive-trees. They favour deep holes containing plenty of rotting material.3. Aëdes (Ochlerotatus) caspius, Pallas.The larvae are sometimes present in fresh, but more frequently in slightly brackish waters. They are often gregarious with the larvae of O. detritus, Hal., but are much less abundant than the latter.4. Aëdes (Ochlerotatus) pulchritarsis, Rondani.The larvae live in rot-holes of oak, elm and white poplar, and are sometimes met with in considerable numbers in the same hole. They prefer holes in which the collected water has become thick and very dark amber in colour owing to the presence of decaying wood debris.5. Orthopodomyia pulchripalpis, Rondani.The larvae are found in the same habitats as those of O. pulchritarsis and are often gregarious with the latter. They are less plentiful, on the whole, than O. pulchritarsis and prefer somewhat clearer water.Note.—In my paper referred to above I mentioned that Finlaya echinus, Edw., is commoner in Corfu than F. geniculatus, Oliv. This statement is due to an error of determination arising from the fact that in many of the Corfu larvae of F. geniculatus the bristles of the abdominal tufts are somewhat more developed than those described in some text-books.

Postcolonialism, profoundly influenced by the Palestinian scholar Edward Said, has until recently been oddly silent on Palestine, a topic that not only preoccupied Said's thinking and writing, but also inspired his theoretical ideas on imperialism, anti-colonial struggle and the worldliness and affiliations of the text and the critic. This theoretical silence on Palestine was, in fact, preceded by a historical, political, geographical, social and cultural contestation of all forms of Palestinian spaces that include not only dispossessing Palestinians of their land, but also building apartheid walls, destroying hundreds of thousands of olive trees, appropriating/stealing traditional Palestinian dishes and clothes, silencing Palestinian narratives and the Muslim call to prayer. This paper will argue that these contested spaces necessarily become sites of Palestinian cultural production, struggle and sumud.

Every Olive Tree in the Garden of Gethsemane is a suite of photographic images of each of the twenty-three olive trees in the garden. Situated at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, the Garden of Gethsemane is known to many as the site where Jesus and his disciples prayed the night before his crucifixion. The oldest trees in the garden date to 1092 and are recognized as some of the oldest olive trees in existence. The older trees are a living and symbolic connection to the distant past, while younger trees serve as a link to the future. The gnarled trunks seem written with the many conflicts that have been waged in an effort to control this most-contested city; a city constantly on the threshold of radical transformation.

The paper characterizes poplar (Populus alba, P. nig­ra) and white willow (Salix alba) forests of the Irtysh and the Black Irtysh river floodplain, together with the silvery salt tree (Halimodendron halodendron) community of the Black Irtysh river floodplain. The Black Irtysh floodplain willow and poplar forests are separated into a new alliance, Rubio dolichophyllae—Populion albae Taran all. nov. (Salicetalia purpureae Moor 1958, Salicetea purpureae Moor 1958), which includes the associations Rubio dolichophyllae—Popu­letum albae Taran 1997 and Rubio dolichophyllae—Salicetum albae Taran ass. nov. The Halimodendron halodendron community is probably related to the class Nerio-Tamaricetea Br.-Bl. et de Bolós 1958. White poplar forests in the Irtysh R. upper reaches, described within the Semipalatinsk city limits, belong to the association Heracleo dissecti—Populetum albae Taran 1997 and its subassociation H. d. —P. a. lamietosum albi Taran 1997 (Equiseto hyemalis—Populion nigrae Taran 1997, Salicetalia purpureae Moor 1958).

Abstract Sediment cores were collected in Lake St. Clair in 1985 and in the St. Clair River in 1986 to investigate the horizontal and vertical distribution and association of Hg in the sediments. A layer of recent sediment up to about 35 cm thick was differentiated by the geochemical composition and visual appearance from the underlying glacial-lacustrine deposits. The concentration of Hg in the surficial sediments in Lake St. Clair was lower in 1985 (<0.025 to 1.200 µg/g) than that found in 1974 (<0.20 to 3.00 µg/g). Up to 8.30 µg/g of Hg were found in the sediments collected from the nearshore area at Sarnia, Ontario, in the St. Clair River in 1986. The concentrations of Hg ranged from 5.05 to 16.00 µg/g in different sand-sized fractions (0.063 to 0.350 mm) of the sediment. The concentration of Hg was 17.80 µg/g in the silt-clay size fraction (<0.063 mm). No relationship was found between the concentration of organic matter and Hg, and the concentration of silica and Hg in the St. Clair River sediments. The results indicated a relationship of Hg with particles of different mineralogical composition. Up to 3.72 µg/g Hg was found in the surface sediment in Chenal Ecarte. The greatest concentration of Hg (13.15 µg/g) existed in the 0.350 mm particle size fraction, which consisted mainly of small pieces of decaying wood. A good relationship was found between the concentration of Hg and organic matter in the sediment at this area.

Spontaneous  natural regeneration under variable conditions on sandy soils and continental  sand dunes were analysed in 5 locations in N.E. Belgium.     The number of seedlings varies between 14.000 and 522.000/ha. The most  prominent invading species are red oak, pedunculate oak and Scots pine.    Two principal types of regeneration are recognized : homogeneous groups of  oak or pine and mixtures, predominantly composed by the same species.  Pioneers such as birch, willow, white poplar and wild black cherry do not  play an important role.    Social differentiation sets in quite early and is mainly provoked by age  differences. Therefore early silvicultural intervention is advisable. The  growth relationships between the species indicate that Scots pine is not in  danger of spontaneous elemination by other species. Because of the density  and variability of spontaneous forest regeneration, the conversion of pure  pine stands into mixed forest, using group regeneration to this end, poses no  real technical problems.

The presence of UDP-D-glucose 4-epimerase (EC 5.1.3.2) in the culture tissue of white poplar was evidenced. As found, the partially purified enzyme preparation contained UDP-D-glucose glucosyltransferase, UDP-D-galactose galactosyltransferase and non-specific enzymes able to cleave the uridine-diphosphate saccharides into the appropriate hexose monophosphates. The activity change of UDP-D-glucose 4-epimerase in tissue culture cells during the growth was in accord with changes in D-galactose content in cell walls and indicated the possibility to regulate the formation of polysaccharides containing D-galactose at the level of production of UDP-D-galactose in cells.

In this chapter, Yaghi offers detailed suggestions on how to code qualitative data after they have been gathered. Based on his doctoral dissertation, this chapter explains that the logic behind coding qualitative data is to turn a significant amount of information into categories that can be used to explain a phenomenon, reveal a concept, or render the data comparable across different case studies. It also elaborates through examples from author’s fieldwork in Tunisia, Egypt, and Jordan on four potential problems that may face researchers in coding qualitative data. These are the questions of preparation, categorization, consistency, and saturation. The chapter concludes by asking researchers to be flexible, and open to the process of trial and error in coding, to confront the data with questions before categorization, and to gather sufficient data on their topics before running their qualitative surveys.
