SUMMARYThe contemporary comparison method of evaluating the progeny test of sires has been employed in estimating the breeding values of bulls used in the development of the Jamaica Hope breed. The need to test a larger number of bulls by combining the programme at the national level is stressed.

Mixed linear models have been applied for predicting breeding values of dairy cattle in most of the developed countries since the 1980s. However, the Russian Federation is still using the old contemporary comparison method. The objective of our study was to develop a best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) for an animal model of breeding values for the Leningrad region. We tested both a first-lactation model (FLM) and a multi-lactation repeatability model (MLM). The data included milk records of 206 114 cows from 49 herds. Estimated heritabilities from FLM were 0.24, 0.20, and 0.20 for milk, protein, and fat yields, respectively, and 0.18, 0.19, and 0.20 from MLM. Repeatabilities were 0.34 for milk yield and 0.31 for both fat and protein yields. Genetic trends were similar for both models (FLM vs MLM): 59 vs 56 kg year-1 for milk, 1.90 vs 1.84 kg year-1 for fat, and 1.67 vs 1.62 kg year-1 for protein yield during 2000–2016. Based on the difference between the genetic trends in FLM and MLM, the applied BLUP method passed the validation method I by Interbull.

The purpose of this paper is to explain how national innovation systems may transform innovation input into innovation output in different counties. Using the Global Innovation Index (GII) we discuss what can be understood by the term ‘innovation’ and how it is translated into the national level. The research question is founded on the assumption that the higher the innovation input, the higher the innovation output attained by a country. We use cluster analysis to verify our assumption, referring to a total of 228 countries. Afterwards we conduct a more in‑depth analysis of two cases (Poland and Bulgaria), where the research question does not find confirmation. Using the cross‑comparison method we aim to verify how and why national innovation systems failed (or succeeded) in creating innovations.

In this study, the contemporary comparison method (CC) of half-sibs relation was used to estimate the breeding values of Holstein-Friesian sires for 305 -day milk yield (305-DMY) and basic components of milk traits, 409 records of cows that are daughters of ten sires in eight Syrian dairy farms where used. Result of the study showed differences in the estimated breeding values(ccEBVs), where the E Sire achieved the highest value of 305-DMY trait (254.47 kg), while the B Sire achieved the highest value of milk protein percentage (MPP), milk fat percentage (MFP)and milk lactose percentage (MLP) traits (0.822 %, 0.857 %and 1.09% respectively). According to their sires, daughters of E Sire outperformed the counterparts in the 305-DMY (p = 0.001), MPP (p = 0.001) and MFP (p = 0.04) traits (5701.44 kg, 3.55%, and 3.88% respectively). According to source of farm, daughters in Farm 5 achieved the highest value of 305-DMY trait (p=0.04) and daughters in the seventh farm achieved the highest value of MPP trait (p=0.007), the values were 5403.48 kg and 3.54 % respectively. Values of heritability (h2) for the traits of 305-DMY, MPP, MFP and MLP were 0.33,0.54,0.43 and 0.47 respectively. Most of genetic and phenotypic correlations coefficients were approaching to zero except the genetic relation between MLP and MPP and phenotypic relation between MFP and MPP (0.88 and 0.84 respectively).

<p>Balai Pembibitan Ternak Unggul is a breeding center established by the Government of Indonesia (GOI) to perform preservation, breeding, breeding stock production and development, and also the distribution of breeding stock of Excellent Bali cattle at national level. In the production of excellent breeding stock through the performance test and progeny test. Pre-weaning growth is one of the important indicators for the population growth. The study was aimed to identify the pre-weaning calf growth rate of Bali cattle in 2010-2011, born from performance-test-passing-dams that were collectively reared with progeny-test-passing sires. Materials used were 84 pre-weaning Bali calves. This was a survey method-based descriptive analysis research. The results showed that in terms of the performance of pre-weaning growth, the birth weights of male and female calves were 18.37±1.65 kg and 18.27±1.29 kg, respectively. The weaning weights of male and female calves were 93.53±21.00 kg and 87.66±12.04 kg, respectively, with weaning time of 205 days. The average of daily weight gain (ADG) were 0.37±0.10 kg/head/day (male) and 0,34±0,06 kg/head/day (female). It was concluded that the pre-weaning calf growth rate of Bali cattle at the BPTU Bali in 2010-2011 were moderately high since they were born from the dams and the sires passing the performance test and progeny test.</p><p>(Keywords: Pre-weaning growth, Bali cattle)</p>
