The simulation model of the overhead transmission line channel implemented in PSCAD software allowing researches of location signal propagation via overhead lines of the distribution networks 6–35 kV under conditions of single phase-to-ground fault is considered. The model reflectograms are compared with their appropriate experimental reflectograms registered under the laboratory and field conditions for the overhead lines during simulation of various types of the single phase-to-ground faults.

Due to the high ground fault resistance and the complexity of power distribution network structure (such as too many nodes, branches and too long lines), adopting common traveling wave method and ac injection method can not effectively locate the single-phase grounding fault in the distribution network system. To solve above problems and determine the position of the point of failure prisely, this paper adopted the dc location method of injecting the dc signal from the point of failure under the power outage offline. This paper introduces the single phase dc method and the method of three phase dc, and the simulation shows that the dc location method is effective and feasible.

Small current grounding power system is widely used in overhead transmission line in medium voltage distribution network in China. Because of its long lines, branch, space truss structure is complex, low level of automation, It is easily influenced by outside force and the natural environment, and single-phase grounding failure rate is high. It is an important topic to quickly and accurately detect the location of the fault line, and improve the reliability of power supply and distribution system. This paper has carried on the induction and the comparison of various fault detection and location method of overhead transmission line which is currently used in single phase to ground, and analyzed their advantages and disadvantages, given the corresponding conclusions, provided the reference for finding out the reasonable single-phase earth fault location method or improvement.

The modeling and calculation of a single phase-to-earth fault of 6 to 35 kV have specific features when compared with circuits with higher nominal voltages. In this paper, a mathematical analysis and modeling of a 3-phase overhead transmission line with distributed parameters consisting of several nominal T-shaped, 3-phase links with concentrated parameters replaced by 1 nominal T-shaped link were carried out. Further analysis showed that not accounting for the distributed nature of the line parameters did not cause significant errors in the assessment of the maximum overvoltage in the arc suppression in single phase-to-earth faults, and that sufficient accuracy insures the representation of the line by only 1 nominal T-shaped, 3-phase link. Such a modeling technique makes it impossible to identify the location of single-phase faults, which is the property of higher harmonic amplification of individual frequencies. Chain equivalent schemas with constant parameters are valid for a single frequency, thereby providing an opportunity to study the nature of the wave process by the discrete selection of parameters. Next in the mathematical representation, we consider the overhead transmission lines as lines with distributed parameters.
