Abstract Several developmental ventures have been used to empower African widows. Such development programs address the economic and social dimensions of the plight of African widows. However, most of these development initiatives tend to ignore religion in the development process. This article will argue that religion is pertinent towards empowering Christian widows in northern Nigeria. A case study of a non-profit initiative in a southern Kaduna village demonstrates that religion is necessary for empowering Christian widows in northern Nigeria. I explore the important role religion plays within Africa, and specifically in northern Nigeria. My assumption is that the wise use of religion to empower Christian widows is effective. I suggest that the implication for the wise use of religion to empower Christian widows would ensure that Christian widows draw from the religious sentiments towards personal and social transformation.

Abstract The study concentrated on social attitudes towards landscape heritage and the how the place of living was perceived in the context of the transformation of the rural landscape that is currently taking place. The following question was formulated: Are individuals’ approaches to landscape and their attachment to their place of living essential in terms of landscaping and future landscape changes? The research revealed that individual perceptions of rurality and the historical traditional rural landscape (HTRL) varied in different groups of interviewees. Nevertheless, observing the loss of the landscape’s beauty was a traumatic experience, and destructive changes to the landscape were difficult to accept for most of individuals who had spent their lives in the countryside and who felt a strong sense of patrimony. Conversely, the HTRL presented a less important value to other respondents, thus the destruction they observed of the local heritage induced less painful feelings in them. Overall, the results suggest that it is one’s personal interest that will ultimately decide about his/her preservation of the HTRL in the nearest future.

The paper evaluates landscape development, land-use changes, and transport infrastructure variations in the city of Martin and the town of Vrútky, Slovakia, over the past 70 years. It focuses on analyses of the landscape structures characterizing the study area in several time periods (1949, 1970, 1993, 2003); the past conditions are then compared with the relevant current structure (2018). Special attention is paid to the evolution of the landscape elements forming the transport infrastructure. The development and progressive changes in traffic intensities are presented in view of the resulting impact on the formation of the landscape structure. The research data confirm the importance of transport as a force determining landscape changes, and they indicate that while railroad accessibility embodied a crucial factor up to the 1970s, the more recent decades were characterized by a gradual shift to road transport.
