Abstract Fat deposition is an important trait for the dry-cured ham industry. A minimum ham fat thickness (HFT) is required for adequate processing. The objective of this study was to evaluate two different strategies to meet this minimum requirement, a nutritional and a genetic one. The study involved productive performance of a total of 147,883 animals (barrows and gilts) from 164 farms. The experimental unit for carcass traits harvested was a truck with 200 pigs each. The nutritional strategy consisted in reducing the SID Lys:NE during one month before slaughter in combination with a feed additive to improve meat quality (2500 kcal NE and 8 g SID Lys/kg vs. 2550 kcal NE and 6.5 g SID Lys/kg). Both feeding programs were offered to crossbreds from a lean Duroc sire line with two different synthetic dam lines. The genetic strategy consisted of comparing two crossbred derived from two Duroc sire line (lean vs fat) all fed the same standard finisher diet (2500 kcal NE and 8 g SID Lys/kg). Experimental feeding program impaired FCR by 0.035 kg/kg (P < 0.05), and increased HFT by 0.28 mm (P < 0.01). The fat Duroc sire line impaired FCR by 0.162 kg/kg (P < 0.05) and increased HFT by 0.77 mm (P < 0.001) compared to the lean one. In addition, one of the dam lines showed a greater HFT (P < 0.001) with no effect on FCR. In conclusion, HFT can be increased through nutritional and genetic strategies assuming a negative effect on FCR. The effects were greater by using a genetic strategy (fatter Duroc sire line) than by the nutritional one (decreased SID Lys:NE ratio in a lean Duroc sire line).

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of feeding management on performance and carcass yield of male turkeys during finishing stage. 920 male turkeys were used, which were housed in 40 pens; each pen was comprised of experimental unit. The birds, from 91 to 154 days, were submitted to four feeding managements, based on feed intake, that were: ad libitum, where feed was permanently available to birds; controlled with a daily supply of 100% of recommended feed amount; controlled with 95% of recommended daily feed amount, and controlled with 90% of recommended daily feed amount. Each feeding treatment had ten replicates of 23 birds each. Controlled or restricted feeding management reduced feed intake, average weight, and weight gain (P <0.05), and worsened feed conversion (P <0.05). Carcass and leg weight were reduced (P <0.05) from the 5% restriction related to the recommended. Breast weight was reduced (P <0.05) with a restriction of 10%. No differences were seen when compared to carcass and leg yield and fat deposition (P> 0.05), only breast yield was reduced (P<0.05) when the birds received 90% of that recommended by the lineage, compared to the ad libitum feed management. The feeding management of male turkeys with restriction of the recommended feed amount during the finishing stage had a negative effect on the performance of the birds. However, controlled feeding at 100% of recommended to the lineage reduced feed intake and did not change the carcass weight, breast or leg yield, or fat deposition.

Изучено влияние кормовой добавки в форме индивидуальных болюсов Метраболь на возможность снижения негативного влияния субклинического кетоза (СКК) и результативность искусственного осеменения высокопродуктивных молочных коров в посттранзитный период. Животные были подобраны по принципу условных аналогов и разделены на 3 группы в зависимости от концентрации β-оксимасляной кислоты в их крови. В I группе (n=18) у коров не было СКК, концентрация кислоты составляла <1,0 ммоль/л, во II группе (n=21) у животных зарегистрирован СКК, концентрация кислоты — 1,0…1,4 ммоль/л. С целью поиска решения по снижению негативного влияния СКК на репродуктивные показатели была сформирована III группа коров, переболевших СКК (n=24) с концентрацией β-оксимасляной кислоты в крови 1,0…1,4 ммоль/л, но с использованием болюсов, применяемых для ускоренного восстановления репродуктивной функции коров после отела. Важной составляющей опыта явилось то, что к моменту гормональной синхронизации у коров всех 3 групп фиксировалось отсутствие СКК (снижение β-оксимасляной кислоты до уровня <1,0 ммоль/л). Для синхронизации полового цикла выбрана схема Пресинх-овсинх. Установлено, что гормональная синхронизация животных, перенесших СКК, в сравнении со здоровыми, не позволяет снизить негативное влияние данного нарушения обмена веществ. Во II группе у животных зафиксированы самые низкие репродуктивные показатели (количество использованных доз; индекс осеменения, сервис-период; время от первого до успешного осеменения; результат первичного осеменения; количество животных, осемененных 3 и более раз). В III группе применение болюсов позволило, в сравнении с животными II группы, не только избежать отрицательного воздействия СКК, но и превзойти по изучаемым параметрам животных из I группы. The effect of the feed additive in the form of individual boluses Metrabol on the possibility of reducing the negative effect of subclinical ketosis (CCK) and the effectiveness of artificial insemination of highly productive dairy cows in the post-transit period was studied. The animals were selected according to the principle of conditional analogs and divided into 3 groups depending on the concentration of β-hydroxybutyric acid in their blood. In group I (n=18), the cows did not have SSC, the acid concentration was <1.0 mmol/L, in group II (n=21), SSC was registered in animals — 1.0...1.4 mmol / L. In order to find a solution to reduce the negative effect of CCB on reproductive indices, a group III of cows was formed who had CCB (n = 24) with a concentration of β-hydroxybutyric acid in their blood of 1.0...1.4 mmol/L, but using boluses, used to accelerate the restoration of the reproductive function of cows after calving. An important component of the experiment was that by the time of hormonal synchronization, cows of all 3 groups had no SSC (decrease in β-hydroxybutyric acid to a level of <1.0 mmol/L). To synchronize the sexual cycle, the Pressinh-ovsinh scheme was chosen. It was found that hormonal synchronization of animals that underwent SSC, in comparison with healthy ones, does not allow reducing the negative effect of this metabolic disorder. In group II, animals had the lowest reproductive indices (number of doses used; insemination index, service period; time from first to successful insemination; result of primary insemination; number of animals inseminated 3 or more times). In group III, the use of boluses made it possible, in comparison with animals of group II, not only to avoid the negative effect of SSC, but also to surpass the animals from group I in terms of the studied parameters.

AbstractIndia has the world’s highest number of undernourished children and the largest school feeding program, the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) scheme. As school feeding programs target children outside the highest-return “first 1000-days” window, they have not been included in the global agenda to address stunting. School meals benefit education and nutrition in participants, but no studies have examined whether benefits carry over to their children. Using nationally representative data on mothers and their children spanning 1993 to 2016, we assess whether MDM supports intergenerational improvements in child linear growth. Here we report that height-for-age z-score (HAZ) among children born to mothers with full MDM exposure was greater (+0.40 SD) than that in children born to non-exposed mothers. Associations were stronger in low socioeconomic strata and likely work through women’s education, fertility, and health service utilization. MDM was associated with 13–32% of the HAZ improvement in India from 2006 to 2016.

Abstract The response to probiotics and enzymes is often documented in research facilities with a high degree of control and via pigs with no insults to health or feed intake. However, in commercial conditions, the response to feed additives promoting advanced gut health and improved digestion must be consistent and defined over a wide range of health statuses, stocking densities, feed intakes, environments, and diet formulations. The objective of this experiment was to determine if a combined feed protease and probiotic system (Syncra® SWI 201, DuPont, Wilmington, DE) would improve growth performance and mortality under commercial conditions. A total of 127,092 pigs (6.0 ± 0.1 kg; PIC 337 sired, Hendersonville, TN) from a sow farm producing porcine reproductive and respiratory virus and rotavirus positive weaned pigs were placed in 53 2,400-head commercial wean-to-finish barns that were alternated to 1 of 2 treatments (a control treatment without Syncra® SWI (SSWI) or with SSWI included at 72.6 g/ton of finished feed from 22.7 kg of BW to harvest) in a rolling allotment over a 12-month period. Pigs were on the experiment for an average of 162 ± 1.0 days (until harvest). Throughout the 12-month experimental period, diets (outside of the SSWI inclusion) could change in order to maximize return over feed costs. Data were analyzed using Proc MIXED (SAS 9.4; Cary, NC) with treatment as the main effect and barn as the experimental unit. Compared to the control, adding SSWI improved mortality by 1.9% and percent grade 1 marketed pigs by 2.2% (P ≤ 0.025). Compared to the control, SSWI did not improve ADG (control = 0.75 vs. SSWI = 0.78 kg) or gain:feed (control = 0.401 vs. SSWI = 0.396). In conclusion, the inclusion of the SSWI combined feed protease and probiotic system can improve mortality and grade 1 marketed pigs, but not growth performance under commercial conditions.

The materials on the study of the feed additive Abiotonic in rabbit breeding, as well as the results of organoleptic, microbiological, histological studies and the amino acid composition of rabbit meat of the New Zealand white breed are presented. According to the results of the studies, there was no negative effect of the feed additive on the veterinary and sanitary indicators of rabbit meat, the carcasses were well bled, drying crusts were formed in a timely manner, the muscles were elastic, light pink, white fat, the broth was clear and aromatic. No pathogenic and conditionally pathogenic microflora were found. At the same time, it was noted that the feed additive contributed to the increase in meat of non-essential amino acids by 6,01%, essential amino acids by 9,74%, which increases the biological value of the product. According to histomorphological studies, the Abiotonic feed supplement did not adversely affect the physiological state of animals, muscle tissue and internal organs developed within the physiological norm of rabbits.

Salmonella is the leading cause of bacterial foodborne zoonoses in humans. Thus, the development of strategies to control bacterial pathogens in poultry is essential. Peanut skins, a considerable waste by-product of the peanut industry is discarded and of little economic value. However, peanut skins contain polyphenolic compounds identified that have antimicrobial properties. Hence, we aim to investigate the use of peanut skins as an antibacterial feed additive in the diets of broilers to prevent the proliferation of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE). One hundred sixty male hatchlings (Ross 308) were randomly assigned to, (1) PS: peanut skin diet without SE inoculation (2) PSSE: peanut skin diet and SE inoculation 3) CON: control diet without SE inoculation (4) CONSE: control diet with SE inoculation. Feed intake and body weights were determined at week 0 and 5. On days 10 and 24 post hatch, 3 birds/pen (24 total) from each treatment group were euthanized and the liver, spleen, small intestine, and ceca were collected. The weights of the liver, spleen and ceca were recorded. Organ invasion was determined by counting SE colonies. Each pen served as an experimental unit and was analyzed using a t-test. Performance data was analyzed in a completely randomized design using a general linear mixed model to evaluate differences. There were no significant differences ( P &gt; 0.05) in weekly average pen body weight, total feed consumption, bird weight gain and feed conversion ratio between the treatment groups. There were no significant differences in SE CFU/g for fecal, litter or feed between treatment groups CONSE and PSSE. However, for both fecal and litter, the PSSE treatment group tended (P ≤0.1) to have a lower Salmonella CFU/g compared to the CONSE treatment group. The results indicate that peanut skins may have potential application as an antimicrobial feed additive to reduce the transmission or proliferation of SE in poultry environments or flocks.

This study aimed to examine the effect of turmeric and garlic inclusion to fermented Sauropus androgynus-bay leaves (FSBL) containing diet on fat deposition, and chemical composition of broiler meats. Two hundred 15-day-old female broilers were distributed into 5 treatment groups with 4 replications as follows. Control feeds with commercial feed additive (T0); Feeds with 1.25% FSBL (T1); Feed with FSBL plus 1 g turmeric (T2); Feed with FSBL plus 2 g garlic (T3); Feed with FSBL plus 1 g of turmeric and 2 g garlic (T4). It was shown that the fat deposition in the abdomen was significantly affected (P<0.01). Furthermore, the inclusion of turmeric and garlic to FSBL containing diet did not affect fat, protein, moisture and ash contents, but increased arginine, methionine and histidine (P<0.01). The addition of turmeric and/or garlic to the FSBL containing diet significantly influenced lauric acid, myristic acid, linolenic acid, cis-11-eicosenoic acid, cis-4,7,10,13,16,19-docosahexaenoic acid (P<0.05), n-3 fatty acid and n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio (P<0.01). In conclusion, turmeric plus garlic supplementation improved amino acid profiles and changed fatty acid profiles. The possible interaction should be considered when we formulated feed additive from medicinal plant mixtures

Abstract The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of a phytogenic feed additive (PFA-F, Digestarom® Finish, BIOMIN America Inc.) on growth performance and carcass characteristics of grow-finish pigs compared to a control, two commercial PFA products (A and B), and a ractopamine feeding program. Two hundred pigs (Choice Genetics, BW = 24.88 ± 0.53 kg) were randomly allotted to 5 dietary treatments and fed diets based on 4 dietary phases. Dietary treatments consisted of: CON, a corn-soybean meal based diet; RAC, 4.5 ppm Ractopamine HCl was added into CON for the last 21 d; PFA-A (commercial product A) was added into CON when pigs reached 90 kg of BW; PFA-B (commercial product B) was added into CON from 75 kg of BW; PFA-F was added into CON from the beginning (25 kg of BW). Body weight and feed disappearance were recorded at the end of each phase, and carcass traits were measured at the end of the trial. Data were analyzed using the Mixed procedure of SAS. No differences were observed from phase 1 to phase 3 among the treatments. At the end of phase 4, RAC had a higher (P &lt; 0.05) BW than the CON, PFA-A, or PFA-B (127.5 vs.123.1 or 121.5 kg); however, no difference between RAC and PFA-F in BW (127.5 vs.124.0 kg) was found. Pigs fed PFA-F had a higher (P &lt; 0.05) hot carcass weight than those of fed CON or PFA-B (93.0 vs. 88.8 or 88.8 kg). No differences were found in lean percentage, fat depth, and loin depth among the treatments. In conclusion, PFA-F (Digestarom Finish) supplementation resulted in similar growth performance and hot carcass weight when compared to a Ractopamine feeding program during the grow-finish period, whereas either commercial product A or B had significantly lower performance than feeding Ractopamine.

This article seeks to identify the core dimensions of and the challenges to innovative school food reforms. Aiming to frame the discussion, the article examines three school feeding strategies: the World Food Programme’s Purchase for Progress (P4P) programme, the Brazilian School Feeding Program, and the European Public Food Procurement system. The first part conceptually defines what is meant by innovative forms of school food procurement, especially regarding its underlying values. It shows that school food reforms go beyond improving access to food, enhancing educational outputs and supporting economic development goals. School feeding holds a transformative potential, insofar as institutional purchases become organized and develop in line with the goals of sustainable development, well-being and social justice. In the second part, we present contemporary examples of good school feeding practices, whose elements might, or might not, be pertinent in particular cases. There are two main lessons emerging from our research. First, policy reform and governmental will are not enough, if the institutional and legal frameworks for operationalizing new school feeding programs are not adjusted to local conditions. Second, we argue that procurement policies or city food strategies can open spaces of manoeuvre within fiscal, material and governance constraints, although the role of social actors is essential and constructive for the success of nesting policy innovations

Abstract The objective was to evaluate the independent and additive effects of Cordyceps mushroom powder and carbadox to pharmacological copper+zinc in nursery pig diets. Two hundred-ten crossbred weanling pigs [(Duroc × (York × Landrace)] avg. 19 d of age and 5.8 kg were used in a 33 day growth trial. Pigs were alloted by weight, sex, ancestry, and assigned to body weight (BW) blocks. Within BW blocks, sex ratios were constant in each pen. Pen was the experimental unit and growth performance was analyzed using BW, ADG, ADFI, and G:F. There were 7 pigs/pen and 6 pens/treatment. Treatments were: 1) a negative diet (NC); 2) positive control (PC; Carbadox, 55 ppm); 3) NC+300 ppm Cordyceps mushroom powder (NC+MP); 4) PC +300 ppm mushroom(PC+MP); 5) supplemental copper sulfate (125 ppm) and zinc oxide (3000 ppm d 0-7, 2000 ppm d 7-35), CuZn. Dietary treatments were fed in a four-phase feeding program (d0-7, d7-14, d14-21, and d21-33). There were no interactions between MP and Carbadox at any time point (P > 0.10). Pigs fed the PC, PC+MP and CuZn treatment had increased BW (P < 0.05), ADG (P < 0.05), ADFI (P < 0.10) and G:F (P < 0.05) over the NC at the end of phases 1, 2, and 3, with no main effect of MP treatment. During Phase 4, pigs fed MP, PC, and CuZn diets all had increased ADG (P < 0.05; 431, 477, 455, 505, 486 g/d, diet 1-5, respectively) and ADFI (P < 0.05) over the NC fed pigs. Overall, d0-33, PC diets and CuZn supplemented pigs had increased ADG (P < 0.05) and ADFI (P < 0.05), with pigs fed MP tending to have increased ADFI (P < 0.08) over NC fed pigs. Feeding nursery pigs pharmacological levels of Cu+Zn and carbadox have economical value to increase nursery pig performance with MP may increase pig ADFI and final BW through potentially complimentary modes of action.
