This study presents 2D experimental results and the numerical simulations of thermal loads in order to observe their influences on the life of mechanical systems. The experimental and thermal evolution was measured using several thermocouples and an infrared pyrometer. In fact, the thermal loading was determined by the resolution of an inverse process where the parameters of thermal laws were identified by minimizing the difference between the experimental results and the numerical simulations. After this optimization process, the mechanical modeling by the finite element method was carried out by applying the optimized thermal loading. The laws of elastoviscoplastic behavior are applied in the working temperature range of a continuous casting rollers tool. This modeling constitutes a technological means to choose a type of a coating material and its optimum thickness and to test different thermal loads in order to optimize the industrial process and to improve the tool’s life.

Purpose This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of a hybrid fire testing by real-time subdivision of physical and numerical substructures (NSs) on simplified structures as a milestone in the development of the method. Design/methodology/approach An interface where the data was exchanged between a finite element software and a hydraulic jack regulator using text files has been developed and applied to perform two experimental campaigns of nine tests on simple steel frame structures with different thermal loading conditions. In the first experimental campaign, the physical substructure (PS) was assumedly protected by insulating material, while the NS was uniformly exposed to ISO 834 fire on all sides. The difference of the second experimental campaign from the first one was that the PS was heated on one side. Findings The experimental results showed how a gap between the determined equilibrium position and the “real” position caused by the time lag, as well as an overshoot phenomenon due to the non-synchronized action of both substructures, may occur. From the identification of the overshoot, two paths of development spring to mind to reduce the delay of the NS. Originality/value In the context that the number of proposal theoretical algorithms continues to increase with the absence of real experimental adjustments, such experimental results and the associated analysis constitute additional understandings to identify possible paths of improvements that might have been missed or could not be accessed through previous studies.

Abstract The finite element method has been used widely in tire engineering. Most tire simulations using the finite element method are static analyses, because tires are very complex nonlinear structures. Recently, transient phenomena have been studied with explicit finite element analysis codes. In this paper, the authors demonstrate the feasibility of tire cornering simulation using an explicit finite element code, PAM-SHOCK. First, we propose the cornering simulation using the explicit finite element analysis code. To demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed simulation, computed cornering forces for a 175SR14 tire are compared with experimental results from an MTS Flat-Trac Tire Test System. The computed cornering forces agree well with experimental results. After that, parametric studies are conducted by using the proposed simulation.

AbstractIn this paper, the rigorous derivations of generalized coupled chiral nonlinear Schrödinger equations (CCNLSEs) and their modulation instability analysis have been explored theoretically and computationally. With the consideration of Maxwell’s equations and Post’s constitutive relations, a generalized CCNLSE has been derived, which describes the evolution of left-handed circularly polarized (LCP) and right-handed circularly polarized (RCP) components propagating through single-core nonlinear chiral fiber. The analysis of modulation instability in nonlinear chiral fiber has been investigated starting from CCNLSEs. Based on a theoretical model and numerical simulations, the difference on the modulation instability gain spectrum in LCP and RCP components through chiral fiber has been analyzed by considering loss and chirality into account. The obtained simulation results have shown that the loss distorts the sidebands of the modulation instability gain spectrum, while chirality modulates the gain for LCP and RCP components in a different manner. This suggests that adjusting chirality strength may control the loss, and nonlinearity simultaneously provides stable modulated pulse propagation.

The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of the small magnetorheological fluid gap on the braking performance of the magnetorheological brake. In this article, theoretical analyses of the output torque are given first, and then the operating principle and design details of the magnetorheological brake whose magnetorheological fluid gap can be altered are presented and discussed. Next, the magnetic circuit of the proposed magnetorheological brake is conducted and further followed by a magnetostatic simulation of the magnetorheological brakes with different sizes of fluid gap. A prototype of the magnetorheological brake is fabricated and a series of tests are carried out to evaluate the braking performance and torque stability, as well as the verification of the simulation results. Experimental results show that the braking torque increases with the increase in the current, and the difference for the impact of the fluid gap on braking performance is huge under different currents. The rules, which the experimental results show, have an important significance on both the improvement of structure design for magnetorheological brake and the investigation of the wear property under different fluid gaps.

AbstractA computer model based on the finite element method has been applied to evaluate the effect of the parasitic area between contact and diffusion edges on end resistance measurements in four terminal Kelvin resistor structures. The model is then applied to Al/Ti/n+ Si contacts and a value of contact resistivity of Qc = 1.8×10−7.Ωcm2 is derived. For comparison, the use of a self-aligned structure to avoid parasitic effects is presented and the first experimental results obtained on Al/Ti/n+Si and Al/CoSi2/n+Si contacts are shown and discussed.

Recently, the wedge self-locking nut, a special anti-loosening product, is receiving more attention because of its excellent reliability in preventing loosening failure under vibration conditions. The key characteristic of a wedge self-locking nut is the special wedge ramp at the root of the thread. In this work, the effect of ramp angle on the anti-loosening ability of wedge self-locking nuts was studied systematically based on numerical simulations and experiments. Wedge self-locking nuts with nine ramp angles (10 deg, 15 deg, 20 deg, 25 deg, 30 deg, 35 deg, 40 deg, 45 deg, and 50 deg) were modeled using a finite element (FE) method, and manufactured using commercial production technology. Their anti-loosening abilities under transversal vibration conditions were analyzed based on numerical and experimental results. It was found that there is a threshold value of the initial preload below which the wedge self-locking nuts would lose their anti-loosening ability. This threshold value of initial preload was then proposed for use as a criterion to evaluate the anti-loosening ability of wedge self-locking nuts quantitatively and to determine the optimal ramp angle. Based on this criterion, it was demonstrated, numerically and experimentally, that a 30 deg wedge ramp resulted in the best anti-loosening ability among nine ramp angles studied. The significance of this study is that it provides an effective method to evaluate the anti-loosening ability of wedge self-locking nuts quantitatively, and determined the optimal ramp angle in terms of anti-loosening ability. The proposed method can also be used to optimize other parameters, such as the material properties and other dimensions, to guarantee the best anti-loosening ability of wedge self-locking nuts.

The thermal expansion mismatch problem for a chip due to temperature decrease from processing temperature to room temperature may cause residual stress inside the chip structure. The thermal prestress accumulated and may affect the chip reliability when the chip was subjected to the thermal loading again. In this paper, the effect of thermal prestress on the micromirror chip embedded with copper through-silicon vias (TSVs) was investigated by the finite element method. In analysis, the micromirror chip embedded with TSVs was analyzed first under thermal loading which resulted from temperature decrease between the stress free processing temperature and room temperature. This process produced a thermal prestress in the micromirror chip. The chip was then subjected to a heat source at the bottom while in operation and the heat transfer analysis was used to simulate this situation. Finally, the thermal stress analysis was carried out to obtain the deformation and the stress distribution in the chip. The results show that the thermal prestress had strong effect on the chip reliability and should be reduced as much as possible. This paper proposed a three steps analysis method to obtain the deformation and the stress distribution in the chip, in which the effect of thermal prestress on the chip reliability was evaluated effectively.

A series of numerical simulations utilizing LS-DYNA was performed to determine the mid-point deformations of V-shaped plates due to blast loading. The numerical simulation results were then compared with experimental results from published literature. The V-shaped plate is made of DOMEX 700 and is used underneath an armour personal carrier vehicle as an anti-tank mine to mitigate the effects of explosion from landmines in a battlefield. The performed numerical simulations of blast loading of V-shaped plates consisted of various angles i.e. 60°, 90°, 120°, 150° and 180°; variable mass of explosives located at the central mid-point of the V-shaped vertex with various stand-off distances. It could be seen that the numerical simulations produced good agreement with the experimental results where the average difference was about 26.6%.
