This paper deals with the hydro-forming of a flat thin metallic disc to achieve a forward domed disc which will be subsequently adopted to manufacture a rupture disc. The plastic deformation induced by the hydraulic energy is numerically simulated through an isotropic hardening plasticity model using a non-linear explicit finite element analysis (FEA). The variation in disc’s central deformation, thickness, equivalent plastic stress and equivalent plastic strain with respect to the applied hydraulic pressure are determined from FEA simulations. The hydro-forming setup is then designed and manufactured, and the metallic disc is experimented under hydro-forming process. The reduction in thickness due to stretching of the thin disc is evaluated from experiment and simulation and a close agreement is found. This research attempt helped in finalizing the hydro-forming fluid pressure, the feasibility and the accuracy of practically achieving the desired geometry of the metallic disc. The near-fixidity effects on abrupt variation in sheet thickness and plastic strain are well captured through simulations which are very difficult to be studied through hydro-forming experiments.

Surface mechanical attrition treatment enhances the mechanical properties of metallic materials by inducing high strength layer on the top surface. In this study, multiple-shot impact behavior was modeled for the 7075-T6 aluminum alloy to achieve maximum magnitudes of equivalent stress, plastic strain, residual stress depth, and residual stress. Finite element simulations have been carried out to investigate the effect of selected framework on stress and strains in constituent. The plastic deformation process during SMAT was analyzed using ANSYS/AUTODYN explicit dynamic solver according to shot velocity and diameter with a dynamic explicit finite element method (FEM). Deformation behavior was evaluated after multiple-shot impact.

The two-dimensional hydrodynamic problem of a symmetric wedge vertically impacting in calm water is analysed by using an explicit finite element method based on a multi-material Eulerian formulation. The slam-induced loads on wedges with different deadrise angle at a constant velocity are calculated, including pressure distribution, maximum pressure coefficient, force coefficient and time history of vertical force, which are compared with available theoretical and analytical results. The time evolution of pressure distribution and free surface elevation are presented. Furthermore, the effects of impact velocity are investigated. It shows that this method is capable of predicting the local slamming loads, and as well assessing the effects of the deadrise angle and the impact velocity on the slamming pressure for the wedge-shape section.

The bridge crossing water way is in the risk of impact by vessel, and thus it is very important to estimate the collision force for the safety of bridge. The impact force between bridge pier and vessel is investigated by numerical simulation and various empirical formulae. The collision response between a 5000t DWT bulk carrier with bulb bow and rigid bridge pier is simulated in the explicit finite element code of ANSYS LS-DYNA. The difference of the impact force between the empirical formulae and FE analysis are discussed. Based on the comparison of the results, the coefficient in the formulae is suggested for obtaining more accurate assessment of impact force.

A hydrodynamic study on the asymmetrical water impact of two-dimensional wedges with roll angle is presented. The slam induced loads on the wedges entering calm water with both vertical and horizontal velocities are predicted based on the explicit finite element method. The effects of the horizontal impact velocity and the roll angle are investigated through the predicted results of pressure distribution, pressure variation during the water entry and total impact force, which are also compared with analytical formulations and other numerical calculations. The present method gives reasonable predictions, compared to the numerical and analytical results.

Damage to building load-bearing members (especially columns) under explosions and impact are critical issues for structures, given that they may cause a progressive collapse and remarkably increase the number of potential victims. One of the best ways to deal with this issue is to provide values of safe protective distance (SPD) for the structural members to verify, so that the amount of damage (probability of exceedance low damage) cannot exceed a specified target. Such an approach takes the form of the so-called safe scaled distance (SSD), which can be calculated for general structural members but requires dedicated and expensive studies. This paper presents an improved calculation method, based on structural reliability analysis, to evaluate the minimum SSD for steel columns under dynamic blast loads. An explicit finite element (FE) approach is used with the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method to obtain the SSD, as a result of damage probability. The uncertainties associated with blast and material properties are considered using statistical distributions. A parametric study is thus carried out to obtain curves of probability of low damage for a range of H-shaped steel columns with different size and boundaries. Finally, SSD values are detected and used as an extensive databank to propose a practical empirical formulation for evaluating the SSD of blast loaded steel columns with good level of accuracy and high calculation efficiency.

This paper proposes a dynamic drop weight impact simulation to predict the impact response of 3D printed polymeric sandwich structures using an explicit finite element (FE) approach. The lattice cores of sandwich structures were based on two unit cells, a body-centred cubic (BCC) and an edge-centred cubic (ECC). The deformation and the peak acceleration, referred to as the g-max score, were calculated to quantify their shock absorption characteristic. For the FE results verification, a falling mass impact test was conducted. The FE results were in good agreement with experimental measurements. The results suggested that the strut diameter, strut length, number and orientation, and the apparent material stiffness of the lattice cores had a significant effect on their deformation behavior and shock absorption capability. In addition, the BCC lattice core with a thinner strut diameter and low structural height might lead to poor shock absorption capability caused by structure collapse and border effect, which could be improved by increasing its apparent material stiffness. This dynamic drop impact simulation process could be applied across numerous industries such as footwear, sporting goods, personal protective equipment, packaging, or biomechanical implants.
