The present article compares data from seven Huīzhōu dialects in an effort to construct a common phonological system for the family as a whole. In the final section of the paper it is concluded that this dialect group is probably an areal or geographical grouping rather than a genetically related dialect family.

In the life of Margaret Clitherow (b. 1552/3–d. 1586), international Counter-Reformation piety met English national and provincial politics and led to the creation of a Catholic martyr. She was born Margaret Middleton in predominantly Protestant York and in 1571 married a widowed butcher and father of two, John Clitherow. By the end of 1574 she had given him at least two more children but had also embraced Catholicism, refusing to attend prescribed Protestant services. This recusancy resulted in three prison terms, each of six months or more, in 1577–1578, 1580–1581, and 1583–1584. She was particularly inspired by the heroism of missionary priests from the English seminaries in Continental Europe and made a point of sheltering them at the family home in York’s Shambles. One such was John Mush, who returned from Rome to England in 1583 and became her spiritual director from c. 1584. The 1585 Act against Jesuits and seminary priests made it a capital felony to harbor such clerics: the sentence could be death. On 10 March 1586 the Clitherows’ house was searched, evidence of Catholic worship was found and Margaret arrested. Her trial followed four days later, though it was for her refusal to enter a plea that she was sentenced to death peine forte et dure, being crushed to death. Her stepfather was then serving as York’s lord mayor, so it was a high-profile case in a close-knit community. Every effort was made to prevent the law taking its course, but Margaret would not be dissuaded from the path of martyrdom. The sentence was executed on 25 March, crushed to death under a door loaded with weights. Mush was among those who buried her body; he then wrote a life of the martyr. That Life is integral to all subsequent developments: popular Catholic devotion to the “Pearl of York,” her inclusion among the lives of the martyred priests, the opening of a formal process in 1874, beatification by Pius XI in 1929, and canonization—as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales—by Paul VI in 1970. Apart from the pious and the scholarly, there are few obvious divisions within the literature on Margaret Clitherow: Reference Works and an Overview derive from John Mush’s Life. Other Lives either parallel Mush or follow in his wake, though there are many other sources for wider studies of Recusancy in Yorkshire. For the martyr’s Trial and Death one must rely on Mush and his sources. His failure to locate the place of her burial has had diverse consequences, as conveyed in the final section of the present article, Burial and Legacy.

The present article examines the artistic features of lyrical prose, namely, autobiographical story in the Ossetian childrens literature in the works of Muzafer Dzasokhov, a well-known modern Ossetian writer, poet, publicist, translator. THE OPINION OF THE FAMILY DIAGNOSTIC-ADVISORY CENTRE AS THE EVIDENCE IN DIVORCE CASES AND ITS INFLUENCE ON JUDGEMENTS (IN THE LIGHT OF C OURT RECORDS)Summary The present article contains results of studies conducted in the Institute of Justice in Warsaw. Basis for the research was 100 judgments in divorce cases by Polish provincial courts from 1997 to 1998. Each of the examined judgments was done after hearing by court of the Family Diagnostic - Advisory Centre (FDAC) opinion in cases including decision as to the guilt for breaking up of marriage and subsequent granting of the paternal authority to the innocent party. The study is going to establish relation between opinions by the FDAC and judgments. The study contains complex and detailed analysis of court decision and its grounds. It shows that opinion given by FDAC is very influential for courts granting judgments which followed it in 80% of analyzed cases. However not all of the suggestions given by experts were relevant. In the majority of the examined cases a mistake made by the expert consisted of the ignorance of law and consequendy of the ambiguous wording of the opinion. Such an opinion was then followed by the judge who usually chose the simplest solution granting the full parental authority to both of the divorced spouses thus avoiding the time consuming and laborious procedure based on the article 58 of the Code of Family and Guardianship Law determining possibility of limitation of the parental authority.Such approach could be declared as an opportunistic one, and provokes postulate de lege ferenda for abolishment of the institution of granting the full parental authority to both of the divorced spouses. Proposed change should simplify courts procedure as well as enable the FDEC to develop its activity as family advisory centers which until now does not exist in Polish legal system.

The present article is about the presence of the tv in the society, in general, and its potential as an important agent, such as the family and the school, on the children’s and young people’s development and education. Nowadays we live in a complex world of images with sound, the most of them transmitted by the tv, the cinema and the internet. The infantile universe is full of those images. This way we structured this article in four parts, refering some of the contents related with this subject. The first part describes the presence of the television in the children's daylife and their relationship with the magic box, even the identification that they make with its favourites characters, in order to understand the space that the TV occupies in their lives. The second part presents the different messages transmitted by the television. It is important to analyze the main risks and advantages of television, that is to say, in spite of some programs show bad values, foment the excessive consumption, expose the children to an atmosphere of violence and pornography, also entertains, accompanies, educates, informs, favours the access to the culture and allows to unite the family around a program. At last the third part, this one outlines the necessity to put the tele as a curricular resource in the school, to teaches the students how to analyze, how to criticize and to think about the texts and the news of the world today. The television, considered a powerful tool, is decisive in the communication, such in the formation of values and ideas as in the culture transmission. The function of the school is not to remain far from this factor, but to try to meditate, to understand and to decide its impact, in a better way, on the development of the children and youngs. As conclusion we can add that we’ve tried to aim some strategies that educators and parents will be able to work, united to the children and the youngs, so they could have a new look of the Tv’s world and that they could know how to make their own selection and how to have a critical attitude before the watched product.

Abstract The present article focuses on appositional metaphoric compounds karmadhāraya-rūpaka in Sanskrit. A first section addresses some problems of compound typology in Western works, where appositional compounds have often been identified as copulative dvandva. Following this general analysis there is a section on appositional compounds from the perspective of the classical Sanskrit grammar, in particular the Pāṇinian tradition where the metaphorical aspect has not been explored specifically. The final section deals with the contribution of Sanskrit treatises on poetics to the identification of metaphoric compounds and their differentiation from compound similes. The approach suggested in later texts on poetics seems to be based on syntactical criteria, the ambiguity of the double-head topic, i. e. candra-mukha, a moon-face being specified in the comment. According to this, an appositional compound should be analysed as a simile, if the comment refers to the actual part of the compound, i.e. the subject of the simile, or as a metaphor, if the comment refers to the standard of comparison, thus shifting the focus of the sentence from the actual to the imagined entity.

Australia’s Wedge-tailed Eagle belongs to the family of eagles, which together span the world. Eagles are powerful predators, with exceptional powers of flight and sight. They may kill to survive, but they also sleep, play, enjoy a bath, make tender parents, and form lasting relationships. This book gives a comprehensive overview of Australia’s largest true eagle and one of the country’s few large predators and scavengers. First appearing in Aboriginal rock-paintings more than 5000 years ago, the Wedge-tailed Eagle was little more than a curiosity to the early European settlers. The book traces the subsequent changes in perception—from its branding as a vicious sheep killer to an iconic species worthy of conservation—and covers distribution, habitat, hunting, relationships, reproduction and chick development. A final section deals with threats to the existence of this magnificent bird. Winner of the 2006 Whitley Award for Best Natural History of an Iconic Species.

The probability generating functional (p.g.fl.) of a non-homogeneous Poisson cluster process is characterized in Ammann and Thall (1977) via a decomposition of the KLM measure of the process. This p.g.fl. representation is utilized in the present article to show that the family 𝒟 of Poisson cluster processes with a.s. finite clusters is invariant under a class of cluster transformations. Explicit expressions for the finite-dimensional count distributions, product moment measures, and the distribution of clusters are derived in terms of the KLM measure. It is also shown that an element of 𝒟 has no multiple events iff the points of each cluster are a.s. distinct.
