In this article, I explore the portrayal of the information technology (IT) boom in Indian Tamil cinema to think through representations of unemployed youth. Three main questions anchor this article: one, what are the ways in which unemployment is problematized? Two, how are depictions of unemployment (and employment) gendered? How do gendered representations of unemployment feed into dominant tropes of language, given the Dravidian orientation of Tamil cinema? Three, how are these crises resolved, and what imaginaries do they present of relationships between men and women? Through a reading of three recent films that directly or indirectly relate to the IT boom, I offer an analysis of the privileging of certain professions, skills and academic disciplines under capitalism, its effects on employment prospects for youth, as well as its gendered implications. I argue that the films assert a subculture of masculinity that represents the subaltern male’s encounter with the globalizing city and its many transformations – most visibly the feminization of labour represented by the IT industry. Refuting the claim that cinema has positively embraced neoliberal subjectivity and celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit of youth, I show that the ‘unemployed hero’ is constructed as a social conscience to highlight the problems of a globalizing world. Though many aspects of late capitalism are productively critiqued through such consciousness-raising, the breakdown of traditional gendered roles appears as a leitmotif, exposing the gendered nature of anxieties accompanying the IT boom. The remaking and consolidation of masculine identity then becomes a way to manage these anxieties.

Entrepreneurship is now considered to be an urgent solution for handling large pools of young graduates around the world. These crucial situations where universities are creating an excess number of graduates as compared to jobs availability increase the pressure on graduates as well as policy makers and educators. Entrepreneurship in this case does not only handle the burden of the unemployed among the youth but also positively improves the economic development of the country’s economy. In becoming entrepreneurs, graduates do not only create jobs for themselves but for other as well and play a vital role in the development of the economy. This paper explains gender-based entrepreneurship intentions amongst students of Russia and China (3 universities in China, 3 in Russia). A questionnaire was developed to find the impact of different behavior factors on male and female students of Russia and China. In terms of methodology, the quantitative technique was used to collect the data. The entrepreneurial spirit is explained after analyzing the data from three universities in each country. The six universities numbering 468 student respondents were analyzed through Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. To find out the association amongst different variables, multiple regression and correlation technique were used. The results also show an association of gender with entrepreneurship in students in both countries. However, in case of Russia male respondents showed higher intention than female respondents. To maintain the same role of male and female members in the society, development suggestions for educators and policy makers are presented.

AbstractMasculine identity confers advantages over the feminine ‘other’, but works differently and in a twofold way. ‘Man’ as the generic representation of ‘the human’ is only apparently de-gendered or gender-neutral. It is in fact gendered masculine and defined within heteronormativity and homophobia. However, there are also overtly gendered roles for men, though these are characteristically represented in selective and flattering ways. Men therefore have little need for an ‘identity politics’ to work against an oppressive norm. Rather they are positioned against each other within competitive hierarchies, which are co-defined with the values and structures of militarism and capitalism.

Abstract Nowadays, the technology of QR codes is one of the promising areas of development of the IT industry, which has found application in various industries, business areas, medicine, etc. In the field of education, QR codes are used to increase the interactivity of classes, provide additional multimedia content, conduct surveys and other control activities. This work presents the key features of QR codes, their architecture and main components. The use of QR codes in automating the process of accounting for students’ attendance is considered. A web application has been developed for teachers, the interface of which allows them to generate QR codes for academic disciplines. A mobile application with an integrated QR-code scanner was developed for students. All attendance data is recorded in the teacher’s electronic attendance register. A conceptual data model of the system is presented, as well as the main algorithms of its operation related to the generation and scanning of QR codes. The practice of using the developed system demonstrates the effectiveness of monitoring attendance data by promptly entering it into an electronic journal.

PurposeThis article aims to highlight the stigmatization attached to the unemployment of educated youth in rural regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.Design/methodology/approachThe study explicates the subjective experiences of the youth as being unemployed and societal attitudes toward them through an in-depth qualitative approach. A total of 30 unemployed male individuals were interviewed through an interview guide.FindingsThe study reveals that unemployed individuals are stigmatized and discriminately treated. They experience the difference in social support from their family and friends during unemployment, which is a discouraging aspect. This finding is in contrast to the existing literature on the subject in which family and friends are described as a major source of social support. As the study is conducted in the rural context, it is observed that local factors coupled with the joint family system have intensified negative attitudes toward the unemployed youth. Subsequently, the negative societal treatment serves as a factor for psychological challenges in their lives.Originality/valueThis article serves the need of exploring the experiences of unemployed individuals precisely in the Pakistani context.

Purpose of the study. The aim of the research is to develop new approaches of improvement the level of training of IT-specialists with knowledge and skills that are in demand on the labor market. The proposed methodology for determining the competencies of IT specialists most in demand by employers includes determining the structure of demand for the competencies of IT specialists in Russia in the digital economy using the developed application. The application of the methodology for the analysis of the content of the academic discipline will make it possible to formulate recommendations on the selection of software tools and technologies used to teach students practical skills in this discipline based on the current requirements of the labor market.Materials and methods. The main idea of the research is to develop a universal methodology that allows you to coordinate the content of the theoretical and practical components of academic disciplines with dynamically changing qualification requirements for specialists in the IT industry from employers. The study of existing approaches to determining the qualification requirements for IT industry specialists has shown that the most effective methodology can be based on the analysis of large volumes of statistical data, the use of modern methods of analysis Data mining, Text mining, and the use of databases to store the collected information. The article discusses a comprehensive methodology for collecting and analyzing information collected from the websites of recruiting companies, including: 1) an algorithm for determining the competencies of IT specialists most in demand by employers; 2) a database model for storing information about vacancies; 3) an algorithm for bringing unstructured textual information about a vacancy to a factual database; 4) authoring analytical application based on the Qlik Sence BI system, which allows monitoring vacancies. The novelty of the proposed approaches lies in the possibility of operational updating of the content of academic disciplines based on labor market requirements. It is proposed to define the indicator of the demand for professional competence (demand for specialists who own IT technology) as the ratio of the number of vacancies in which this competency is mentioned to the total number of vacancies in potential areas of graduate work. It is obvious that those competencies that will show the best results and are in demand on the labor market.Based on an analysis of the requirements of employers for applicants posted on the website of the Russian company HeadHunter, an example of determining the current competencies in the field of database technologies is considered. An analytical application developed on the basis of the Qlik Sence BI system was used as a tool. Information was collected using the Datacol parser (module “parser resume hh.ru”).Results. In general, the proposed methodology can be used to analyze the relevance of software tools used to teach students practical skills within the academic discipline. The specific results obtained as a result of the study can be useful in the formation of a workshop for teachers of such disciplines as “Databases”, “Database Management Systems” and other disciplines in this area.Conclusion. In the conditions of the dynamic development of the sphere of information technology, constant updating of the disciplines of this profile is a prerequisite for the quality training of IT specialists. The article proposes a methodology for choosing software products used for teaching students based on current labor market requirements. According to the results of scientific and practical development, a certificate of registration of a computer program was received.

The study attempts to explore the impacts of unemployment; how the state of unemployment is becoming the cause of social, economic, physical, personality, and psychological costs on the unemployed graduates with identification of reasons for unemployment in Bangladesh. The study area was the unemployed graduates of the social science faculty of the University of Dhaka. The study followed a qualitative approach by using the case study method. Capacity mismatch, corruption, the incapacity of the graduates, absence of job specialization, outdated curriculum were the leading reasons for unemployment, the study identified. The impacts of unemployment are invariably alike on graduates-mental depression, embarrassment, socio-economic vulnerability, erosion of inner potentiality, degradation of personality, and frustration. The study explored that sense of self-esteem erodes due to peer group pressure and their attitudes towards unemployed graduates. The findings significantly guide that Bangladeshi graduates, who hailed from lower and middle strata, lack in entrepreneurial spirit and are bound in cyclical craziness to secure a job primarily a government job. It recommends for further evaluation of Bangladesh’s education systems, the focus on higher education which will meet the capacity mismatch between market demands and education; and changes in attitudes-overindulgence on government jobs, associated with cultural factors, must be needed to minimize the vulnerabilities. Academia, learners, policymakers, scholars, policy advocates will get significant insight from the findings of the study.

There has rightly been much recent sociological concern with the effects of recession and the restructuring of the economy on family relationships. One important aspect of recent economic changes has been the pressure on older people to leave the workforce before the age of conventional retirement. Male early retirement has been a significant factor in accounting for the dramatic fall in the economic participation rates of older male workers over the last decade. Yet early retirement has been a relatively neglected topic in social scientific literature. Studies of unemployed and redundant males have tended to suggest that there is little renegotiating of the domestic division of labour within the home due to the ways in which traditional notions of masculine identity are called upon to protect the position of the unemployed male. This paper reports findings relating to these issues from a study of men from West Yorkshire who had taken early retirement from the local chemical industry. These findings suggest considerably more renegotiation than studies of unemployed and redundant males but neither the amount or type of such renegotiation seemed to be related to either marital disharmony or quality of life in retirement.

Abstract Ethiopia is one of the rapidly urbanizing countries in Africa and rural-urban migration is the major factor in the urbanization process. Migration is selective and rural youth are more likely to migrate to cities than others. However, the capacity of cities to accommodate the massive influx of migrants by providing formal employment is limited. Consequently, migrants remain marginalized and without access to employment opportunities. The majority are pushed into self-employment in the informal sector with few entrepreneurial skills and no access to affordable finance. Besides, though Ethiopia has shown economic growth, the challenges posed by a fast-growing young population has increased urban inequality, making the youth vulnerable. Despite such challenges, harnessing the benefits of the youth bulge and promoting inclusive development through the promotion of entrepreneurship has become a priority area since 1990s. Although improvements have been made, entrepreneurship programs are unable to reach the unemployed youth and those engaged in informal sector. The objective of this paper is to explore barriers that hinder the youth to formalize informal businesses and to start new businesses. The study followed a qualitative approach. Data were collected through key informant interviews and focus group discussions from four cities-Addis Ababa, Adama, Bahir Dar and Hawassa. The findings show that several bottlenecks including politicization of entrepreneurship, lack of understanding of the nature and demands of the youth; weak instructional systems; low levels of service capacity and inefficiency; lack of entrepreneurship education, youth negligence, and corruption hinder entrepreneurship programs and thereby attaining inclusive development in Ethiopia.
