The paper describes a Web application focused on the theme cyber- bullying. The application aims to help educators in the approach of cyberbullying in primary schools, through a non-linear interactive narrative. The interaction of students with the application makes the learning process more attractive and interesting. The tool was evaluated based on an usability test, aiming to analyze aspects of user interaction with the system. The results show that the applica- tion complies with what is proposed, and that there was satisfaction on the part of the evaluation participants.

Road safety campaigns and programs have been extensively introduced and implemented in Malaysia. However, their effectiveness is still being debated. Children especially will become the unfortunate victims of road accidents if they are unaware of the danger and precaution actions to be safe on the road. In response to that, this paper introduces an application as an alternative that inculcates road safety awareness to further support existing related programs and campaigns. Particularly, an interactive web application incorporating interactive multimedia elements has been designed and evaluated. Results on the usability test indicate a promising success and highlight aspects and issues that can be further focused for improvement and enhancement.

Concerns about women educational leaders, their performance within primary schools, their approaches to leadership, including the hindrances experienced in the school headship have received few if any attention in Côte d’Ivoire. This paper analyses how women principals lead their schools and contributed to schools’ advancement in challenging situations that stand in their ways. The authors used a qualitative approach to collect data through in-depth semi-structural interviews with five female principals in Ivorian elementary schools. Findings showed that women influence directly teachers’ commitment and indirectly students’ learning process as well, particularly those who have learning difficulties. Data also revealed that these female used to create an environment and academic support that gives attention to children, as these learning conditions are similar to that of their actual life at home. Based on the findings, we assumed that women leadership could be a significant contribution to students’ learning course, which in turn positively influence the school improvement. That is even consistent with the literature, which remains constant in the assertion that women leaders own some abilities, such as being caring, attentive, patient. In this regard, educational practitioners, policy makers and stakeholders should pay more attention to women primary school principals for empowering them to display their know-how, expertise and talent useful for the students’ learning process. That seems a possible backup for Ivorian education system to reduce the low academic achievement and enhance schools’ performance.

XML is a widely used general-purpose annotation formalism for creating custom markup languages. XML annotations give structure to plain documents to interpret their content. To extract information from XML documents XPath and XQuery languages can be used. However, the learning of these dialects requires a considerable effort. In this context, the traditional Query-By-Example methodology (for Relational Databases) can be an important contribution to leverage this learning process, freeing the user from knowing the specific query language details or even the document structure. This chapter describes how to apply the Query-By-Example concept in a Web-application for information retrieval from XML documents, the GuessXQ system. This engine is capable of deducing, from an example, the respective XQuery statement. The example consists of marking the desired components directly on a sample document, picked-up from a collection. After inferring the corresponding query, GuessXQ applies it to the collection to obtain the desired result.

Computer aided interactive narrative allows people to participate actively in a dynamically unfolding story, by playing a character or by exerting directorial control. Because of its potential for providing interesting stories as well as allowing user interaction, interactive narrative has been recognized as a promising tool for providing both education and entertainment. This paper discusses the challenges in creating interactive narratives for pedagogical applications and how the challenges can be addressed by using agent-based technologies. We argue that a rich model of characters and in particular a Theory of Mind capacity are needed. The character architect in the Thespian framework for interactive narrative is presented as an example of how decision-theoretic agents can be used for encoding Theory of Mind and for creating pedagogical interactive narratives.

Purpose – How responsible education and “green” learning becomes crucial for survival for the Mamanwa ethnic minority in Surigao del Norte, Mindanao, Philippines. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Ten interviews to teachers and 40 Mamanwa students at the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit School in Palalihan, Surigao del Norte, Mindanao, Philippines. Each interview lasted for 1 hour and had ten questions related to “green” learning, responsible education, ecospirituality and sustainable practices. The teachers' interviews took into account how the students incorporate into their learning process the traditional curriculum being taught in the Philippines in primary schools and the Indigenous People's Core Curriculum (IPCC) which has been implemented recently to indigenous people all through the country. Each interview to the students lasted 30 minutes and was related about the things they leaned, how they learned it and applied it to their daily lives. Findings – The importance of a Christian approach to indigenous education respects the traditions and sacred knowledge of a marginalised community in the Philippines. The teaching approach of the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit (MSSHS) shows the development of “green” knowledge and responsible educational capabilities in their practices as educators. Research limitations/implications – Tribal cultural values and MSSHS education bring in a kind of “transcultural” learning process which gives Mamanwas greater skills for cross-cultural adaptation in the Pilipino environment. Practical implications – Non-formal education through the IPCC becomes a key element for the learning process in an environment where sustainable practices are part of the upbringing of the Mamanwa community. Social implications – The relationship between spiritual values and the environment shows a greater closeness between responsible education and “green” learning. Originality/value – Thanks to the MSSHS education, the Mamanwa community has learned, through a syncretic educational process, a greater ability for transcultural adaptation in a transitional process for ethnic minorities in the Philippines.

We have observed two prevalent design paradigms for web applications: those who start from an existing data or process definition and project from that outward toward the user, and those conversely who start from a sense of desired user experience and derive from that required data and process elements. Design methods which seem natural to one community may look overly abstract, layered with unnecessary separation of concerns, and academic to no purpose. Conversely, others may be frustrated by a seeming lack of concern for reuse, valid content, and support for multiple design roles all of which may argue for additional architectural layers. Due to affinity of current web presentation technology to JSON encoded data, many times the choice to start with user experience precludes re-use of existing XML data. We present an approach to bridging this methodology and data divide by working within the conventions of existing web application frameworks to introduce incremental separation of concerns such as Model-View layering with interfaces and behavior suited to the introduction of XML-based technologies such as XForms at the model layer. In this way we hope to provide incremental means to adopt first a separation of concerns that supports packaging and reuse of model data and behavior, and secondly an XML-based technology for such data models that supports convenient projection of existing business data and process definitions to the client for user interaction.
