Investigation on endurance evaluation of a portal crane: experimental, theoretical and finite element analysis

Abstract In this study, the stress on portal crane components at various payloads has been investigated theoretically, numerically and experimentally. The portal crane was computer-aided modeled and finite element analyses were performed so that the most stressed points at the each trolley position investigated on the main girder could be determined. In addition, the critical points were marked on the portal crane, and strain gages were attached to the those critical points so that stress values could be experimentally determined. The safety factor values at different payloads were determined by using finite element simulation. Results indicate that the most stressed component in the examined portal crane is the main girder. Experimental results indicate that the maximum stress value on the main girder is 3.05 times greater than the support legs and 8.99 times larger than the rail.

This paper reports the results of finite element analysis representing the sealing performance tests on the slip-on type pipe flange connections for 8 inch and 16 inch. The flange connections are subjected to internal pressure and bending moment. Internal pressure is applied by helium gas and the bending moment is loaded through 4 points bending equipment. Gas leak rates are measured by pressure decay method. During the test, the variations in the axial bolt force are monitored for all the bolts by strain gages. The pipe stress at the junction of pipe and flange is also measured. Finite element analysis simulates the tests and the simulated results are compared with the measured data. Then the behaviors of the slip-on type flange connections under internal pressure and bending moment as well as the sealing performance are clarified by the experiment and the finite element simulation.

The primary objective of this study was to design the optimal geometry of a novel screwdriver, create the grooves on a ball head screw, and demonstrate its resistance to a torque of up to 40 Ncm at angulations of 0°, 15°, and 30° by using nonlinear finite element analysis. A secondary objective was to create a foolproof, easily recognizable system. The grooved ball head screw and geometry of the screwdriver, functioning from an angulation of 0° to 30°, was generated using Pro-ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0 software. Static structural analyses among bodies in contact were performed at different angles of 0°, 15°, and 30° at a torque of 20 Ncm and 40 Ncm using nonlinear finite element simulation by means of ANSYS 12.0. The maximum stress supported by the ball head screw and screwdriver was similar at 20 Ncm and 40 Ncm. Although greater deformations were found at 40 Ncm, these were small and might not affect the performance of the system. Further, the rupture torque value for the M2 connection was 55 Ncm for 0° and 30°, and 47.5 Ncm for 15°. Numerical simulation showed that the ball head system design can achieve the mechanical strength requirements expected for screws used in implant-supported restorations at an angulation of up to 30°. Finite element analysis showed this novel ball head screw and screwdriver system to be a good solution for angled screw channels in implant-supported prostheses.

A finite element simulation of convex tablet compaction was present in this paper with Drucker–Prager Cap model of lactose material. The effects of different compression speed on tablet property were analysis. The results show that the maximum stress appears the top and bottom near the die and the mises stress distribution become more uniform with the speed decreased. The density distribution change little with the variation of compression speed and the maximum density locate the top and bottom near the die rim. The compression speeds have little affected on the powder displacement. The research can contribute to save cost for tablet production test through the simulation analyze the tablet property of compression process.

Pipelines have the highest capacity and are the safest and least environmentally disruptive way for gas or oil transmission. Recently, failures due to corrosion defects became of major concern in maintaining pipeline integrity. A number of solutions have been developed for the assessment of remaining strength of corroded pipelines. However, these solutions are known to be dependent on material properties and pipeline geometries. In this paper, a Fitness-For-Purpose (FFP) type limit load solution for corroded gas pipelines made of X65 steel is proposed based on experimental results and finite element analyses. For this purpose, a series of burst tests with various types of corrosion defects was performed. Finite element simulation was carried out on burst test to derive failure criteria. And then, a series of finite element analyses were performed to obtain a limit load solution for a single corrosion defect on the basis of burst test simulation. As a result, an FFP type limit load solution for corroded X65 gas pipelines was proposed.

This paper proposes a computation method using the equivalent magnetic circuit to analyze the driving force for the non-contact permanent magnet linear drive system. In this device, the magnetic driving force is related to the rotation angle of driving wheels. The relationship is verified by finite element analysis and measuring experiments. The result of finite element simulation is in good agreement with the model established by the equivalent magnetic circuit. Then experiments of displacement control are carried out to test the dynamic characteristic of this system. The controller of the system adopts the combination control of displacement and angle. The results indicate that the system has good performance in steady-state error and response speed, while the maximum overshoot needs to be reduced.

The aim of this paper is to design and fabricate a star die and a cylindrical die to produce a star shape by redrawing the cylindrical shape and comparing it to the conventional method of producing a star cup drawn from the circular blank sheet using experimental (EXP) and finite element simulation (FES). The redrawing and drawing process was done to produce a star cup with the dimension of (41.5 × 34.69mm), and (30 mm). The finite element model is performed via mechanical APDL ANSYS18.0 to modulate the redrawing and drawing operation. The results of finite element analysis were compared with the experimental results and it is found that the maximum punch force (39.12KN) recorded with the production of a star shape drawn from the circular blank sheet when comparing the punch force (32.33 KN) recorded when redrawing the cylindrical shape into a star shape. This is due to the exposure of the cup produced drawn from the blank to the highest tensile stress. The highest value of the effective stress (709MPa) and effective strain (0.751) recorded with the star shape drawn from a circular blank sheet. The maximum value of lamination (8.707%) is recorded at the cup curling (the concave area) with the first method compared to the maximum value of lamination (5.822%) recorded at the cup curling (the concave area) with the second method because of this exposure to the highest concentration of stresses. The study obtains a methodology for the bionic design of the tower for wind turbines. To verify the rationality of the biological selection, the Analytic Hierarchy Procedure (AHP) is applied to calculate the similarity between the bamboo and the tower. Creatively, a bionic bamboo tower (BBT) is presented, which is equipped with four reinforcement ribs and five flanges. Further, finite element analysis is employed to comparatively investigate the performance of the BBT and the original tower (OT) in the static and dynamic. Through the investigation, it is suggested that the maximum deformation and maximum stress can be reduced by 5.93 and 13.75% of the BBT. Moreover, this approach results in 3% and 1.1% increase respectively in the First two natural frequencies and overall stability.

Finite element simulation of stable fatigue crack growth using critical crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) was done. In the preliminary finite element simulation without crack growth, the critical CTOD was determined by monitoring the ratio between the displacement increments at the nodes above the crack tip and behind the crack tip in the neighborhood of the crack tip. The critical CTOD was determined as the vertical displacement at the node on the crack surface just behind the crack tip at the maximum ratio. In the main finite element simulation with crack growth, the crack growth rate with respect to the effective stress intensity factor range considering crack closure yielded more consistent result. The exponents m in the Paris law were determined.

This paper shows the finite element simulation of a representative specimen from the firewall section in the AEROMARMI ESTELA M1 aircraft. This specimen is manufactured in glass and carbon / epoxy laminates. The specimen is subjected to a load which direction and magnitude are determined by a previous dynamic loads study [10], taking into account the maximum load factor allowed by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) for utilitarian aircrafts [11]. A representative specimen is manufactured with the same features of the firewall. Meanwhile a fix is built in order to introduce the load directions on the representative specimen. The relationship between load and displacement is plotted for this representative specimen, whence the maximum displacement at the specific load is obtained, afterwards it is compared with the finite element model, which is modified in its laminate thicknesses in order to decrease the deviation error; subsequently this features could be applied to perform the whole firewall analysis in a future model [10].
