<p>The Philippines has a long history of being conquered by the male-dominated west. We see evidences of these patriarchal politics through our literature. Most of these works are included in the Filipino literary canon. But there is an argument whether or not these required reading which actually perpetuated the sexist myths that prevailed in our society. Every after year, the students are presented with material teeming with sexual stereotypes that students do not easily recognize. Nick Joaquin is typically found in required reading lists. His award-winning novel “The Woman who had Two Navels” (1961) has been read in classrooms usually in the patriotic context. The aim of this study is to reread this classic literary masterpiece, and to identify the female archetypes present within, and to show their anti and pro feminist implications. The researchers used textual analysis to identify the images of women characters present in the novel, juxtaposing them against Female Archetypes based on Johnson’s classifications. Through textual analysis, the researchers provided textual evidences to support the claims. Tables were used as tally sheets. The results showed that the female protagonists depict multiple female archetypes that made the mother-daughter relationship of Concha and Connie very complex. Their contradicting archetypes prove that there is a male constructed competition between them. The novel is clearly more than just Joaquin’s account of the travails of post-Spanish Philippines. It is a reflection of a universal phenomenon of the male constructed competition between women. The archetypes are clearly antifeminist and therefore the novel should be read with care especially in the classroom.</p><p><strong><br /></strong></p><p><strong>Keywords: </strong>Female archetype, conflicts, Nick Joaquin, Philippines</p><div> </div>

This chapter approaches police records as a genre that gains from being considered in its relationships with other genres of writing. In particular, we will follow its long-standing relationship to detective fiction, the novel, and biography. Going further, the chapter emphasizes the intermedia character of police records not just in our time but also throughout their existence, indeed from their very origins. This approach opens to a more inclusive media history of police files. We will start with an analysis of the seminal late nineteenth-century French manuals prescribing the writing of a police file, the famous Bertillon-method manuals. We will then track their influence following their adoption nationally and internationally, with particular attention to the politics of their adoption in the colonies. We will also touch briefly on the relationship of early policing to other disciplines, such as anthropology and statistics, before moving to a closer look at its intersections with photography and literature.

This article presents a close reading of the Romani characters and their actions in five stories by Viennese Romani writer and activist Samuel Mago and in two stories by his brother, Hungarian award-winning journalist Károly Mágó, in their bilingual Romani and German collection glücksmacher - e baxt romani. Brief biographies and an outline of the history of Roma and antiziganism in Austria provide background to textual analysis that focuses on how characters in the stories engender baxt/“Glück,” which means both happiness and luck. This dual meaning has inspired philosophical, psychological, economic, and anthropological studies, but literary scholars have rarely examined the concept in texts by Roma. For the protagonists in the brothers’ stories, happiness and luck become based less on monetary fortunes than on other means to live and survive in dark times of persecution and discrimination. The characters’ decisions unveil perceptions of baxt that rely largely on acquiring food, preserving and passing down family heirlooms, receiving an education, and freeing oneself and one’s family from persecution.

This theme, The Portrait of the American Woman in Margaret Mitchell's Novel " Gone With The Wind " is broad, challenging, interesting and among many contradictory to one another's point of view, at different social grounds , periods of time simply or merely of the fact that a female writer of this tremendous saga read mostly by women represents multi dimensional themes. It is an interweave of tradition, history , war, social classes, Reconstruction, transition and more. All these and many other themes written with a masterful disciplined imagination put in the longest novel in history. A masterpiece of 1037 pages published in 1939 and subsequently in the greatest and longest motion picture on screen. Piling up records and building it's own history and legends. The novel has sold in more than 25 million copies in at least 27 languages in thirty countries and in more than 185 editions according to the research conducted in 2004. These figures continue to increase, not to mention that the film is seen by more individuals than the total population of the USA. GWTW has grown and conflated into a phenomenon of American and later into a phenomenon of levels of basic appreciation after international popular culture. Thus criticism was attested at the levels of basic appreciation , often in the opposite poles of love and /or hate , the evaluation again in bipolar terms of praise and / or scorn. On the popular level the book was lauded and in the literary world it was defamed. Mitchell's novel " Gone With The Wind " was seen as important symbols of American culture forces. A serious biography in 1965 sparked reconsiderations simply by the assumption of Mitchell's importance as a writer. Other re- evaluations followed which asserted the literary quality of the work, notably in feminist terms. Attesting the qualities that critics wrote such as Michener who said: " The spiritual history of a region". Many other scholarly papers have been undertaken to attack it and completed to praise it. Because of the enormous popularity , readability , embodiment of the heroine woman character Scarlett O'Hara with many other women who saw themselves in those situations or experienced the same then or even nowadays. These multi themes to discuss about, issues primarily of women, the novel is defined as a woman's literary artistic achievement, seen through the eyes off a woman Scarlett herself and many other women characters. Is seen the distinction of the past and present of the old and new society. Mitchell herself says it is about courage and gumption to change as a necessity in order to survive war, reconstruction and transition. The search of survival by poor and nearly defeated young women who had no control or capacity to understand these tensions. Indeed this novel has become an icon of the US culture.

The author explores the different stages and artistic devices of Bulgakov’s work on these images in the context of the creative history of the novel. The article, based on an extensive archival research in the Manuscript Collection of Russian State Library, follows the development of the space of light and darkness through a textual analysis of the whole corpus of manuscripts of this novel

Tulisan ini bertujuan mengungkap konflik batin tokoh-tokoh perempuan dalam novel Tempurung. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah novel Tempurung karya Oka Rusmini yang diterbitkan tahun 2010. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik kepustakaan. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori psikoanalisis sosial Karen Horney. Metode yang digunakan dalam tulisan ini adalah metode deskriptif analisis dengan pendekatan psikoanalisis. Pembahasan ini menghasilkan hal-hal berikut. Pertama, adanya hubungan buruk orang tua-anak, dan keadaan budaya dan tradisi telah menciptakan berbagai peristiwa yang mendorong munculnya konflik batin tokoh-tokoh perempuan. Kedua, tindakan-tindakan yang dilakukan tokoh-tokoh perempuan untuk menanggulangi atau me- ngurangi konflik batinnya diekspresikan dalam tindakan balas dendam. Abstract: This paper aims to reveal the inner conflicts of women characters in the novel of Tempurung. The source data of this study is Tempurung, a novel of Oka Rusmini which was issued in 2010. The data was collected by librarian techniques. This study uses the theory of Karen Horney’s social psychoanalysis. The method used in this paper is descriptive analysis method with the approach of psychoanalysis. The discussion results in the following. First, the bad relationship of parent-child and the state of culture and tradition have created a variety of events that encourage the emergence of inner conflicts of the women characters. Second, the actions taken by the women characters to overcome or reduce their inner conflicts expressed in acts of revenge. One of the important questions in bulgakovian studies is connected with the space of “the eternal house”, peace, which the master had deserved. The author of this paper try to understand the writer’s intention based on a textual analysis of the novel. In our work, we rely on the system of editions of the novel that we have established and its main text, reflecting the last creative will of the author to the fullest extent [1]. The line “The Master – Margarita” is outlined in drafts of the 1931 novel and is developed in its second edition (1932–1936). The third (1936) and fourth (1937) editions are incomplete — they don’t have the episodes considered in this paper. Therefore, our study uses the texts of drafts of 1931, the second, fifth (last handwritten, 1937–1938) and the sixth (final, 1938–1940) editions of the novel. The draft texts are conveyed by dynamic transcription, which will make visible the process of writer’s work on the creation and allow us to see the formation of the author’s intention. Graphic conventions are used for this: a piece of text crossed out by the writer — [text]; an insert during the writing process — text; an insert crossed out — [text]; a later insert — {text}; a later insert crossed out — {text}; a conjecture — <text>; reliability of the transmitted author’s text — <sic>; the end of a page and the transition to the next one are indicated by two straight vertical lines ||.

The first-person narrative form is notoriously problematic. Throughout the history of the novel, it has both repelled authors due to the obvious limitations imposed by its restriction to a single consciousness and attracted them because of the apparent veracity it imparts to psychological portrayal. In the most conscientiously constructed examples of the type, the first-person narrator is able to portray directly the thoughts of a single character only, that is, himself. Of other characters, he can only report actions and surmise motives, and these characters to whom the reader does not have cognitive privilege may appear to be two-dimensional or even come off as caricatures.Fedor Dostoevskii's Besy (Demons, 1871-72) is a first-person memoir novel. My thesis is that the novel's narrative form itself involves the reader psychologically and morally in problems that occupied Dostoevskii throughout his life—problems of freedom, contingency, and eternity.


This article explores the XX―XXI centuries scientific critical investigations devoted to the study of the Ukrainian writer`s Hryhoriy Tiutiunnyk creativity. Researchers of the 1960-1980s (P. Havrilov, Yu. Barabash, L. Volovets, etc.) keep focus primarily on revealing the relationship between the personality of the writer as a Soviet patriot and his work, as well as an analysis of such types of person represented by the writer as a Soviet man, a peasant man, a man-leader, a man-warrior and patriot-one, etc. Notwithstanding the prominent ideology of this period literary exploration, a number of important aspects related to the author`s style, problem content of works, peculiarity of the ideological and aesthetic evolution of the writer, originality of the artistic reproduction of the author's concept were analyzed. Most scholars focus on the analysis of the novel “Vir”. M. Lohvinenko, K. Volynsky, B. Chip, L. Volovets, I. Semenchuk, Y. Barabash draw attention to the lyricism of the narrative in the novel and to the peculiarities of scenery images as a way of revealing character`s inner world. L. Volovets P. Havrilov, I. Semenchuk emphasize the psychological representation of characters images of the novel. Y. Badzo, L. Volovets, K. Volynsky and P. Serdyuk distinguish the motive of finding the truth in the writer`s works. The aforementioned researchers place emphasis on the analysis of war factor as a mean of revealing characters` personalities in the novel “Vir”. M. Lohvynenko, K. Volinskyi, B. Chip, L. Volovets, S. Lisovska, I. Semenchuk, Y. Barabash draw attention to the narrative lyricism of author`s work. L. Volovets, P. Gavrilov, I. Semenchuk emphasize the psychological nature of character image in the novel. Recently, S. Lisovsky's works on poetry of his works have appeared. As well as O. Nezhyvyi, who outlines the history of novel publication and carry out a textual analysis of the first print, the modern version and the main text. It is proved that a comprehensive study of Hryhoriy Tiutiunnyk`s work of has not been accomplished yet.

This essay applies a feminist synthesis of rhetoric and material culture theory to José Donoso’s novel, El obsceno pájaro de la noche (1970). Donoso’s novel depicts needlework as a communal rhetorical practice among women characters within enclosed communities. They sew, embroider, and repair. Drawing from Goggin and Tobin’s studies of needlework as rhetorical practice (2002, 2009a, 2009b, 2009), we investigate women’s needlework and sewing, contextualizing the historical and cultural referents within Chile’s long history of textile work, including the explication of epidermal aesthetics in Halart (2017). The paradoxically violent and restorative acts of sewing and repair provides the background for the many monologues the novel sets in the sewing circles of La Chimba convent. Each woman’s stitch enacts revenge for ongoing displacement and confinement to domestic spaces of home/convent. This essay argues that las viejas develop and claim a communal voice through their needlework upon the mute and bound monster of the imbunche, which becomes the fabric for their polyvocalic expression. In sewing the figure of the imbunche, the female characters participate in a tactile rhetoric that precedes verbal and occularcentric discourse and emphasizes the immediate and relational sense of touch. Our research is feminist as it recenters Donoso criticism on the female characters within his work, to showcase how their machinations and manipulations of materials enact an agency denied by a discourse and identity which prioritizes visual and verbal expression. We encourage Donoso studies towards a feminist focus on communities of women and process over individual and product.

History has often become the inspiration for writers, as it has for Isa Kamari in the case of his novel Satu Bumi ( One Earth ) (1998). What were the historical sources for this author, and how were they employed in his fiction? What was the author’s aim in fictonalizing these historical sources? These are the questions that receive attention in this paper. Using a historical approach and textual analysis, the historical facts found in the novel Satu Bumi and the author’s aims behind fictionalizing them are examined in this study. The study finds that the novel Satu Bumi is based on the history of Malaysia and Singapore, and fictionalizes the historical events using elements of romance and drama. However, even in this romantic and dramatic setting, the historical elements used do not merely serve to record the history of Malaysia and Singapore but are also employed to predict the future of the Malay community in Singapore. It is an alarming state due to the island state’s physical development and a political situation that could be deemed racist, apart from the attitude of the Malay community itself.
