Significance
Israeli firm Delek Drilling agreed to sell gas worth 15 billion dollars to Egyptian firm Dolphinus over ten years. Kamal questioned the value of the deal for Egypt on national security grounds, arguing that “gas deals […] give Israel, an enemy to Egypt, a hand to manipulate Egypt's economy”. Agreements with Israel are controversial domestically, even if Cairo’s leadership maintains good relations with Tel Aviv.
Impacts
Ankara’s strained relations with most of its neighbours mean it is unlikely to pose a threat to Cairo.
Turkey-Cyprus tensions will not have a material impact on Egypt’s ambitions to act as a regional gas transit hub.
ENI will be able to apply lessons learnt from its Zohr development to Cyprus’ Calypso and undertake a similar fast-track field development.
