Impacts of age, body weight, body conditions, and scrotal circumference on sperm abnormalities of bulls used for artificial insemination (AI) in Bangladesh have been studied. During 1997-2002, 1390 ejaculates of semen from 71 bulls from Central Cattle Breeding Station and Dairy Farm, Savar, Dhaka, Rajshahi Dairy and Cattle Improvement Farm, Rajabarihat, and District Artificial Insemination Centre, Rajshahi, were collected and examined. Total head abnormalities, free loose head, mid-piece, tail abnormalities, proximal and distal cytoplamic droplets, total tail abnormalities and total sperm abnormalities were recorded. Age of the bulls had significant effect on sperm abnormalities (P < 0.01) except for proximal cytoplasmic droplet. Similarly, body weight had significant effect (P < 0.05) except for the total head abnormalities, while body conditions had no significant effect on mid-piece, total tail abnormalities and total sperm abnormalities except for the total head abnormalities. Scrotal circumference had significant effect (P < 0.05) on all the sperm abnormalities. The present results demonstrate that the middle (8 to < 10 yrs) and older (>10 yrs) bulls having body weight of < 450 kg, very good body condition and 36 to < 38 cm scrotal circumference had the lowest sperm abnormalities. The need for semen examination for morphological abnormalities of spermatozoa in bulls to be used for AI programme is strongly implicated by this study. The purpose of the present study was to estimate the effect of phenotypic characteristics on the performances of bulls at three AI centres/stations (CCBSDF, Savar, RDCIF, Rajabarihat and District AI centres, Rajshahi). A total 71 bulls were studied for phenotypic parameters, viz., body weight, body condition score, scrotal circumference (SC), libido score and time required between two ejaculates during 1993 to 2002. The information on the phenotypic parameters was obtained by interviewing the semen collectors in respective AI centers, reading the AI bull resister as well as examining and observing the bull during semen collection. The bulls were classified according to genetic composition viz., Group I: 100% Friesian, Group II: 100% Sahiwal, Group III: 75% Friesian? 25% Local, Group IV: 50% Sahiwa l?50% Friesian, Group V: 50% Friesian ? 50% Local and Group VI: 100% Local. In general, the average body weight, body condition score, scrotal circumference (SC), libido score and time required between two ejaculates were 572 ? 124 kg, 3.2 ? 0.5 (Score:1-5), 36.3 ? 1.9cm, 3.3 ? 0.6 (Score:1-5) and 7.1 ? 2.3 minutes, respectively. Individual bull had significant effect on phenotypic characteristics in six genetic groups. The overall better performance of phenotypic parameter was observed in bull Id #: 0065 for Friesian breed, 163 for 100% Sahiwal breed, 7811 for 75% Friesian ?25% Local, 5156 for 50% Sahiwal?50% Friesian, 8224 for 50% Friesian ? 50% Local and 40248 for 100% Local breed. Therefore, phenotypic characteristics has clearly influenced on bull performances of Artificial Insemination (AI) programme in Bangladesh. (Correlation between progesterone levels in early luteal phase and embryonic death  in Aceh cattle) ABSTRACT. Progesterone is an important hormone that functions to maintain pregnancy and is produced by the corpus luteum. The aim of this study was to see a correlation between progesterone and the incidence of embryonic death in Aceh cattle. This study used four adult female cows, 3-5 years old, 150-250 kg body weight, clinically healthy, and have a normal reproduction. The synchronized with 5 ml prostaglandin F2 alfa hormone, and double injection pattern with 11-day intervals. The blood was collected for progesterone measurements on 5th, 6th, 7th day post artificial insemination. Measurement of progesterone concentration was carried out using an enzymelinked-immunoassay (ELISA), while pregnancy and embryo mortality was performed using the trans-rectal ultrasonography method on the 25th day after insemination. The examination was repeated every 10 days until day 55th after insemination. Progesterone secretion peaks in pregnant cows were on day 7th (2.082 ng/ml), in cattle Late Embryonic Mortality (LEM) on day 5th (8.209 ng/ml) and in cattle not pregnant on day 7th (3.051±1.157 ng/ml). The pattern of LEM progesterone secretion on days 5th to 7th tends to decrease while those that survive tend to increase.

Relationships of scrotal circumference (SC) with body weight (BW) and backfat thickness (FT) as measured from scanograms were studied. A total of 935 observations on growing multibreed synthetic beef bulls on a postweaning performance test were available from a commercial herd for this study. Significant breed group, period and group × period interaction effects were noted on SC, BW and FT. BW and SC increased significantly during the test in all breed groups, while FT showed no change in three breed groups. Repeatability pooled across groups for SC was estimated as 0.72; 0.66 after adjusting for BW. Significant correlations were noticed between SC and BW within each breed group. Partial correlations between SC and BW at constant FT were not different from gross correlations. Linear regression coefficients of SC on BW were significant in all groups and showed heterogeneity among groups but not between periods within groups. Adjustments of SC for BW should, therefore, be breed group specific. BW alone accounted for considerable variation in SC, from 38 to 76%. Simple correlation coefficients between SC and FT were low and significant in only two groups. A significant but low positive relationship was noted between SC and FT at constant BW in a group fed a high-concentrate diet during the postweaning gain period, but there was no relationship in four other groups. Results indicated that the method of adjusting SC for FT as an indirect way of adjusting for scrotal fat was not satisfactory. Key words: Bulls, scrotal circumference, growth

The experiment was conducted to determine the effect of artificial insemination (AI) on different production parameter in Hubbard Classic Broiler breeder parent stock. A total number of 300 female and 30 male Hubbard Classic broiler breeder parent stock birds were used as experimental animals and parameter recorded are: Health condition and body weight of birds, % of Production, % Hatchability,% Uniformity, grade A chicks, mortality % , hatching egg % & effect of diluents use, birth weight of day old chick (DOC). Significant variation (p<0.01) was observed in number of hatched birds, % of hatchability, production of total no of Grade A chicks, total number of damaged chicks and average chick weight. In the study, hatchability (%), production (%), growth and puberty weight (g) were significantly higher during post insemination compared to pre insemination stage, where as mortality (%) and uniformity (%) were significantly lower in case of post insemination stage. Body weight and uniformity (%) of birds either both sexes were significantly (p<0.01) different in birds at pre insemination stage compared to the birds at insemination. To be mentioned that body weight of birds was negatively correlated to the uniformity. Finally it could be concluded that AI may be better in all the parameters observed in this study than natural mating. So, AI can be practiced in Hubbard Classic broiler breeder parent stock.J.
