BACKGROUND Patient portals offer modern digital tools for older adults with multiple chronic conditions (MCC) to engage in their health management. However, there are barriers to portal adoption among older adults. Understanding portal user interface and user experience (UI and UX) preferences of older adults with MCC may improve the accessibility, acceptability, and adoption of patient portals. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to use the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as a framework for qualitatively describing the UI and UX, intent to use, and use behaviors among older patients with MCC. METHODS We carried out a qualitative descriptive study of Kaiser Permanente Colorado’s established patient portal, My Health Manager. Older patients (N=24; mean 78.41 (SD 5.4) years) with MCC participated in focus groups. Stratified random sampling was used to maximize age and experience with the portal among participants. The semistructured focus groups used a combination of discussion and think-aloud strategies. A total of 2 coders led the theoretically driven analysis based on the TAM to determine themes related to use behavior, portal usefulness and ease of use, and intent to use. RESULTS Portal users commonly used email, pharmacy, and lab results sections of the portal. Although, generally, the portal was seen to be easy to use, simple, and quick, challenges related to log-ins, UI design (color and font), and specific features were identified. Such challenges inhibited participants’ intent to use the portal entirely or specific features. Participants indicated that the portal improved patient-provider communication, saved time and money, and provided relevant health information. Participants intended to use features that were beneficial to their health management and easy to use. CONCLUSIONS Older adults are interested in using patient portals and are already taking advantage of the features available to them. We have the opportunity to better engage older adults in portal use but need to pay close attention to key considerations promoting usefulness and ease of use.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the roles leadership behaviors have on technology acceptance models, focusing on bank leaders’ intention to use mobile-commerce. The study included responses from 101 senior-level managers working at FDIC-insured commercial banks in the United States. Three instruments including Kouzes and Posner’s (1987) leadership practice inventory (LPI), Wu and Wang’s (2005) mobile commerce technology acceptance model (MC-TAM), and Oreg’s (2003) resistance to change model (RTC) were employed. A correlation analysis revealed that two transformational leadership behaviors—model the way and enabling others to act—positively relate to behavioral intent to use mobile commerce. A regression analysis found that perceived compatibility, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use are positively related to the behavioral intent to use m-Commerce. However, the authors found that the RTC and LPI model cannot predict the willingness to use m-Commerce.

The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) (Davis, 1989) measures perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use as predictors of a user’s intent to use computer technology, and their actual usage on the job. The measure first appeared in 1989, in an MIS Quarterly article by Fred Davis and in a coauthored article in Management Science(Davis, 1989; Davis, Bagozzi, & Warshaw, 1989). Extending the Theory of Reasoned Action (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980) to technology, Perceived usefulness (U) is defined as “the degree to which a person believes a particular system would enhance his or her job performance.” Perceived ease of use (EOU) is defined as “the degree to which a person believes that using a particular system would be free of effort.” ‘Usage intentions’ (BI) was measured through self-predicted future usage and ‘user acceptance’ was measured through self-reported current usage. Although information technology is adopted to improve employee performance, these gains are often lost or diminished by users’ unwilling to accept and use the information system. Davis wanted to understand why users rejected or accepted information technologies, to better predict, explain and increase user acceptance. The TAM model has since become one of the most established models for predicting user acceptance.

ABSTRACTOlder adults may become more familiar and interested in using touchscreen technology (TT). TT can be used to engage older adults living in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) and staff there can play an important role in supporting residents to use TT. However, before these are introduced, it is crucial to investigate their opinions in using TT with residents. A questionnaire based on the Technology Acceptance Model was administered to assess staff usage and confidence in using TT, their perceptions in TT ease-of-use and usefulness in helping them care for their residents. Perhaps unsurprisingly, results found that respondents were familiar using TT. More importantly, staff reported that they were interested in engaging residents with TT and nominated different training methods to support them such as group in-services. This project provides information about staff experience and acceptance of the use of TT for residents in RACFs.

<em>Information Technology services in banking business which is very dynamic and advanced makes the bankers must adjust to the presence of this technology. In this paper, the authors will explain the role of Mobile banking technology which is provided by CIMB Niaga in servicing its customers for banking transactions. The methodology used in this paper is quantitative with the purposive sampling one. Instrument used the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as developed by Parasuraman and Davis by modifying them to fit the state of the research object. This research was conducted in Jakarta and several other places. Research and data collection took 6 months from November 2015 to April 2016. The variables included trust, perceived use (PU), perceived ease of use (PEU), attitude toward use (ATU), Intent to use (ITU), and actual use (AU). After the data were collected, the regression analysis was performed. From the analysis result it was found that trust and perceived use (PU) variables did not positively and significantly influence the intent to use (ITU) variable, as well as the perceived use variables (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEU) which have no significant and positive effect on attitude variable on usage (ATU). For that case, the authors propose an improvement strategy to maintain and grow this business forward.</em>

Abstract Objective This study focused on patient portal use and investigated whether aesthetic evaluations of patient portals function are antecedent variables to variables in the Technology Acceptance Model. Methods A cross-sectional survey of current patient portals users ( N  = 333) was conducted online. Participants completed the Visual Aesthetics of Website Inventory, along with items measuring perceived ease of use (PEU), perceived usefulness (PU), and behavioral intentions (BIs) to use the patient portal. Results The hypothesized model accounted for 29% of the variance in BIs to use the portal, 46% of the variance in the PU of the portal, and 29% of the variance in the portal’s PEU. Additionally, one dimension of the aesthetic evaluations functions as a predictor in the model – simplicity evaluations had a significant positive effect on PEU. Conclusion This study provides evidence that aesthetic evaluations – specifically regarding simplicity – function as a significant antecedent variable to patients’ use of patient portals and should influence patient portal design strategies.

AbstractThis research looked at the choices that children make in the classroom when offered manual and technological options to measure scientific variables. Over 170 school children were involved in science lessons designed in collaboration with school teachers and the research team as part of the planned curriculum. We found that approximately 25% of the students chose the manual measuring options, compared with 75% who chose the technological options. During the focus group interviews (n = 62) carried out immediately after the class, we found that some children who had selected the technological option had done so due to perceptions of the tool’s novelty and “accuracy.” Some later regretted their choice, reasoning that “real” scientists did not use technology, that it would have been more challenging to measure manually, and therefore that they would have “felt more like scientists” had they selected the manual option. Perceptions of ease of use sometimes lowered children’s intent to use the technology option. Similarly, students who chose the manual option alluded to the inauthenticity of the technology option: this is not “what scientists do.” Consequently, students who had selected the manual option were also more likely to describe feeling “like a scientist” when carrying out the measurements. The possible implications of the findings, in terms of a possible inversion of the technology acceptance model for students in the science classroom, are explored.

BACKGROUND Continuous in-home monitoring of older adults can provide rich and sensitive data capturing subtle behavioral and cognitive changes. Our previous work has identified multiple metrics that describe meaningful trends in daily activities over time. The continuous, multi-domain nature of this technology may also serve to inform caregivers of the need for increased attention in order to maintain the health and safety of at-risk older adults. Accordingly, care decisions can be based on objective, systematically assessed real-time data. OBJECTIVE The present study deployed a suite of in-home monitoring technologies to detect changing levels of care needs in residents of independent living units in seven retirement communities. METHODS Continuous activity data were presented to staff involved in decisions regarding transitions in care. Comparisons were planned between outcomes for residents whose data were shared and those whose data were not made available to staff. Staff use of the data dashboard was also monitored over the course of the study. RESULTS Despite initial enthusiasm and an iterative process of refinement of measures and modes of data presentation based on staff input, actual inspection and therefore use of resident data was well below expectation. Survey data and in-depth interviews offered insight to the mismatch between intended and actual use. CONCLUSIONS Most continuous in-home monitoring technology acceptance models focus on perceived usefulness and ease of use, and equate intent to use technology with actual use. Our experience suggests otherwise. We found multiple intervening variables exist between perceived usefulness, intent to use and actual use. Ethical, institutional, and social factors are considered in their role as determinants of use.
