Abstract This essay constitutes a close reading of the works of Feofan Prokopovich that touch upon gender and womanhood. Interpretively it is informed by Judith Butler’s book Gender Trouble, specifically by her model of gender-as-performance. Prokopovich’s writings conveyed a negative characterization of holy women and Russian women of power, a combination of glaring silences and Scholastic dual codes that in toto denied the association of womanhood with glory or wisdom. In this he stood apart from other East Slavic Orthodox homilists of his day, even though they too invariably associated virtue with masculinity (muzhestvo). For Prokopovich, wisdom, strength, constancy, etc., were innately masculine. Women, by contrast, were weak, inconstant, non-rational, and guided by emotion. His sermons nominally in praise of Catherine I and Anna Ioannovna were suffused with narrative gestures that, to those attuned to the nuances of Scholastic rhetoric, ran entirely counter to their nominal message. Several panegyrics to Anna, for example, made no mention of her at all, a practice in sharp contrast to his sermons to male rulers, which typically placed the honoree firmly in the foreground. Even more startling is his singularly minimalist approach to Mary, for whom he composed almost no sermons and whose presence he barely mentioned in tracts where one would have expected otherwise. This essay concludes that this attitude reflected both his personal preferences and influence that Protestant Pietism had on his thinking.

The main focus of this paper is the complete enumeration of self-dual abelian codes in nonprincipal ideal group algebrasF2k[A×Z2×Z2s]with respect to both the Euclidean and Hermitian inner products, wherekandsare positive integers andAis an abelian group of odd order. Based on the well-known characterization of Euclidean and Hermitian self-dual abelian codes, we show that such enumeration can be obtained in terms of a suitable product of the number of cyclic codes, the number of Euclidean self-dual cyclic codes, and the number of Hermitian self-dual cyclic codes of length2sover some Galois extensions of the ringF2k+uF2k, whereu2=0. Subsequently, general results on the characterization and enumeration of cyclic codes and self-dual codes of lengthpsoverFpk+uFpkare given. Combining these results, the complete enumeration of self-dual abelian codes inF2k[A×Z2×Z2s]is therefore obtained.

In König Hirsch, Henze imagined operatic tradition primarily as an Italian inheritance consisting of vocal beauty, formal artificiality, and emotional expression. König Hirsch mediated Henze’s experiences living and listening in Italy through the musical modernism in which he had been trained immediately following the war. Tributes to conventional operaticism included stylized incantations, moments of hysterical coloratura, a villainous Credo, and several instances of folk-music pastiche. A close reading of Henze’s characterization of the musician figure Checco, who expresses himself partly through diegetic “Neapolitan” song, shows the collision between Henze’s modernism and his newfound italianità. The opera’s arias later became emblems of the opera’s expressive excesses; the conductor of the premiere, Hermann Scherchen, subjected them to severe cuts, setting off a fight over the artistic status of traditions of vocalism and emotion that ensured Henze’s definitive break with the avant-garde.

Recently, several authors used linear codes to construct secret sharing schemes. It is known that if each nonzero codeword of a code [Formula: see text] is minimal, then the dual code [Formula: see text] is suitable for secret sharing. To seek such codes Ashikhmin–Barg give a sufficient condition from weights; in [Formula: see text] code [Formula: see text], let [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] be the minimum and maximum nonzero weights, respectively. If [Formula: see text] then all nonzero codewords of [Formula: see text] are minimal. In this paper, a necessary and sufficient condition is given for self-dual codes and for MDS codes to verify the inequality (*). Special codes are examined and applied for secret sharing schemes.

This paper analyzes the characterization of YHWH as a political ruler in Exodus 3-15. His role as king of Israel comes as a novelty in the biblical narrative after the book of Genesis, and in the book of Exodus he presents new divine traits such as jealousy, wrathfulness and holiness. Among his new traits as a ruler comes the concern with his reputation, both in the short and long term, amidst his followers and even his enemies. A close-reading of the Plagues narratives thus shows God’s actions stemming from his political reasoning and strategies, which aim at driving the whole earth — especially Israel, his chosen people — to acknowledge his absolute power and rule.

This paper focuses on American superhero comics – i.e. superadventures and their likeness to mythology. Our goal is to understand how subtle changes in the characterization of a superhero may make them more congruent with the present day morality and ideals of the society, even if a given character is willing to directly challenge that morality. Through a close reading of Batman #53, in which Bruce Wayne states that Batman is like a god and that he does not believe in him anymore – nor should the people of Gotham – we discuss the symbolic meaning of Bruce Wayne's phrase and the implications for the readers' understanding of who the Batman is and what he stands for. One of the main impacts of this characterization is that Batman ceases to be the “interventionist god” as he was portrayed in many stories in the last decades, and learns to embrace the frailty and limitations of the human condition.

The synthesis and characterization of oxaporphyrins ( OTPP and O 2 TPP ) containing one and two furan rings in place of pyrrole and a mixed oxathiaporphyrin ( OSTPP ) is reported. Spectroscopic and electrochemical studies reveal that oxaporphyrins exhibit optical and emission characteristics closer to the parent H 2 TPP , while their electrochemical behaviour parallels that reported for mono and dithiaporphyrins. However the characteristics of the mixed oxathia derivative resemble that of monothiaporphyrin. Protonation studies reveal weaker resonance interaction between the β-hydrogens and meso-phenyl substituents in sharp contrast to thiaporphyrins. The reduction potentials for OSTPP and O 2 TPP indicate stabilization and destabilization of their LUMOs relative to the parent H 2 TPP in the ground and excited states, respectively.

We give a complete functional theoretic characterization of tempered exponential dichotomies in terms of the invertibility of certain linear operators acting on a suitable Frechét space. In sharp contrast to previous results, we consider noninvertible linear cocycles acting on infinite-dimensional spaces. The principal advantage of our results is that they avoid the use of Lyapunov norms.

The article deals with problems of academic translation in Lithuanian academic community, represented by a particular case: Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble (1990) appeared in Lithuanian a few years ago, in 2017. The translation happens to be extremely bad on many levels, yet nobody has pointed it out publicly. My aim here is to fill this gap by providing extensive close reading of both texts and comparative analysis. In hope to encourage new, more self-reflective practices.
