Introduction: Skeletal maturity indicators are very important indicators when diagnosing and panning the treatment in growing population. Cervical Vertebrae Method (CVM) and Fishman’s Skeletal Maturity Indicators are two commonly used methods for the diagnosis and treatment planning. The aim of the study was to investigate the correlation between cervical vertebral maturation (CVM)and Fishman’s hand-wrist skeletal maturity indicator and chronological age by including subjects within the range of circumpubertal growth spurt in Central India. Materials & Method: One Twenty Five contemporary hand-wrist and lateral cephalometric radiographs from population of Central India were randomly selected and analyzed. All subjects were within the circumpubertal period i.e. female subjects were between 10 and 15 years of age, and the male subjects were between 12 and 17 years of age. The hand-wrist bone analysis was evaluated using the method developed by Fishman whereas cervical vertebra bone analysis was evaluated using the method developed by Baccetti and co-workers. These two methods and chronological age were correlated using the Spearman rank correlation analysis. Result: CVM was significantly correlated with hand-wrist maturation (r=0.8868). However low correlation was found between the CVM and chronological age( r =0.7139) and little correlation was found between the HWM and chronological age ( r =0.6892). Conclusion: CVM is a valid indicator of skeletal growth during the circumpubertal growth period and has a high correlation with the HWM for the Central India population. However chronological age is not suitable to measure skeletal maturity as shown by the low correlations found between the chronological age and both CVM and HWM.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the skeletal maturation by using salivary DHEAS levels and its correlation with existing skeletal maturity parameters represented by cervical vertebrae and MP3 region radiographs in adolescents in pre-pubertal and pubertal age groups. Methods: In this study, 80 children in the age range of 8 - 14 years were divided into two equal groups based on their chronological age as group I (pre-pubertal group) and group II (pubertal group). Pre-existing lateral cephalograms and medial phalanx of third finger (MP3) radiographs of their left hands were assessed. The levels of the DHEAS of each individual were analysed by ELISA kit. ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey’s test and student t-test were used for statistical analysis. P-value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The mean level of DHEAS values shown in the present study was 4.36 +/- 0.32 ng/mL in group I and 5.73+/-0.39 ng/mL in group II. This study showed that in group I, more subjects were in stage 1 of cervical vertebral maturation than stage 2 and there were significant differences between the two stages (P-value = 0.011); also, in group II, more subjects were in stage 3 than 4 and there were significant differences between the two stages (P-value = 0.017). This study revealed the highest salivary DHEAS levels to be in the F stage of pre-pubertal MP3 development in addition to the H stage of MP3 development in pubertal children. This study noted that there were significant differences for salivary DHEAS levels between males and females not only in pre-pubertal (P-value = 0.031), but also in pubertal stages (P-value < 0.001). Conclusions: Salivary DHEAS, like cervical vertebra and MP3 radiographs, can be used for growth assessment in young adolescents.

The assessment of an individual’s development by investigating the skeletal maturity is of much use in various medical fields. Skeletal maturity can be estimated by evaluating the morphology of the cervical vertebrae. The aim of this study was to conduct comparisons of the chronological age in different bone development stages. The retrospective study was conducted based on lateral cephalometric radiographs belonging to patients with ages between 6 and 15.9 years, from Romania. For the assessment of skeletal maturity, the Cervical Vertebral Maturation (CVM) method was used. In total, 356 radiographs were selected, but after applying the exclusion criteria, 252 radiographs remained in the study (178 girls and 74 boys). Different mean chronological age values were obtained for the general sample, as well as for the two genders. The chronological age started to be significantly different at the CS4 stage. Patients with CS4, CS5, and CS6 stages had a significantly higher chronological age compared to patients with CS1, CS2, and CS3 stages. It was noted that patients with CS1 and CS2 stages were more frequently boys, while patients with the CS5 stage were more frequently girls.

Abstract Objectives The aim of this study was (1) to evaluate the relationship between spheno-occipital synchondrosis (SOS) fusion stages, cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) stages, and clivus sizes with chronological age on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, and (2) to compare these methods for accurate age estimation using regression analysis. Materials and Methods The CBCT images of 200 individuals (102 females and 98 males) were included in the study. The SOS fusion stages and CVM stages were evaluated. The width and length of the clivus were measured. The effects of SOS fusion stages, CVM stages, clivus width, and clivus length on age estimation were evaluated by univariate tests and the effects of coexistence with ANCOVA and regression model. Spearman rank correlation analysis was also used to investigate the relationship between the SOS fusion stage, CVM stage, clivus width, and clivus length. Results The SOS stages, CVM stages, and clivus width were not shown statistically significant differences between the sexes (p-values = 0.205, 0.162, and 0.277, respectively), whereas clivus length was significantly longer in males (42.9 ± 4.26 mm) than in females (41.04 ± 3.74 mm). Multiple regression analysis showed 80% success when all parameters (SOS fusion stages, CVM stages, clivus width, and clivus length) were taken into consideration. Conclusion In conclusion, with the use of CVM stages and SOS fusion stages together, an accurate and reliable age estimation can be obtained in forensic medicine.

The aim of this study was to investigate the reproducibility of the Cervical Vertebral Maturation (CVM) method and the potential for chronological age estimation using this method. The sample consisted of 474 lateral cephalometric radiographs, from orthodontic patients aged 6.4–22.4 years. Six raters were trained to the CVM method (Baccetti). All images were assessed twice. Intra- and inter-rater agreements were assessed by Cohen’s weighted kappa and intraclass correlation coefficient, respectively. Analysis of variance was performed to investigate the correlation between cervical maturation stages and chronological age. The age prediction potential of the method was tested by general linear model regression analysis. Intra-rater reliability ranged from 0.857 to 0.931. Intra-rater absolute agreement ranged from 77% to 87% however inter-rater absolute agreement was lower than 50%. Inter-rater reliability was higher than 0.9. The 3rd Cervical Maturation Stage (CS3) showed the lowest reproducibility. The mean age differences among the 6 CS stages were statistically significant and increased as the CS increased. CS and gender could roughly explain the 60% (adjusted R2 = 0.61) of the age variance of the sample. This CVM method proved able to show high reliability; however, it cannot predict accurately the pubertal growth spurt. A direct correlation was found between cervical stages and chronological age. This method provides a broad estimation of chronological age.

Objectives: To investigate the relationship between cervical vertebrae maturation and mandibular second molar calcification stages.Study design: The study was designed as a retrospective, descriptive and crosssectional research project. Pre-treatment lateral cephalograms and panoramic radiographs of 99 males and 110 females in the age range of 7 to 18 years 7 months were evaluated with Demirjian Index (DI) and cervical vertebrae maturation indicators (CVMI) of Hassel and Farman. A null hypothesis was proposed that there is no relation between CVMI and DI. Results: A highly significant association (Pearson's contingency coefficient 0.713 for males and 0.863 for females) was found between DI and CVMI. In males, the DI stage E corresponded to stage 2 of CVMI (pre–peak of pubertal growth spurt) and DI stages F and G corresponded to stages 3 and 4 of CVMI (peak of pubertal growth spurt). DI stage H was associated with stages 5 and 6 of CVMI (end of pubertal growth spurt). In females, the DI stages C, D corresponded to CVMI stages 1, 2; DI stages E, F with CVMI stages 3, 4; DI stages G, H with CVMI stages 5, 6. Conclusion: Mandibular second molar calcification stages can be used as indicators for assessment of skeletal maturity.

Purpose:To investigate the relationship between dental, chronological, and cervical vertebral maturation growth in the peak growth period, as well as to study the association between the dental calcification phases and the skeletal maturity stages during the same growth period.Methods:Subjects were selected from orthodontic pre-treatment cohorts consisting of 420 subjects where 255 were identified and enrolled into the study, comprising 145 girls and 110 boys. The lateral cephalometric and panoramic radiographs were examined from the archives of the Department of Orthodontics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Dental age was assessed according to the method of Demirjian, and skeletal maturation according to the Cervical Vertebral Maturation Method. Statistical elaboration included Spearman Brown formula, descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient and regression analysis, paired samples t-test, and Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient.Results:Chronological and dental age showed a high correlation for both gender(r =0.741 for boys, r = 0.770 for girls, p<0.001). The strongest correlation was for the CVM Stage IV for both males (r=0.554) and females (r=0.68). The lowest correlation was for the CVM Stage III in males (r=0.433, p<0.001) and for the CVM Stage II in females (r=0.393, p>0.001). The t-test revealed statistically significant differences between these variables (p<0.001) during the peak period. A statistically significant correlation (p<0.001) between tooth calcification and CVM stages was determined. The second molars showed the highest correlation with CVM stages (CVMS) (r= 0.65 for boys, r = 0.72 for girls).Conclusion:Dental age was more advanced than chronological for both boys and girls for all CVMS. During the peak period these differences were more pronounced. Moreover, all correlations between skeletal and dental stages were statistically significant. The second molars showed the highest correlation whereas the canines showed the lowest correlation for both gender.

Chronological age conveys only a rough approximation of the maturational status of a person whereas skeletal maturity indicators give a more accurate estimation. Therefore, it is of interest to document the correlation between chronological and skeletal age using CVMI and modified MP3 methods. A total of 39 subjects between the age ranges of 9-16 years were selected for this study. Pre-treatment lateral cephalograms and hand-wrist radiographs of the subjects were used. The skeletal age was analyzed by the Cervical Vertebrae Maturity Index (CVMI) and modified MP3 methods. The data was analyzed with SPSS software version 23.00. Kendall’s Tau correlation test was performed to estimate the correlation between chronological age and skeletal age among the subjects and a linear regression test was also performed. Positive correlation was found between chronological age and skeletal age assessed by CVMI method (r= 0.398) and modified MP3 method (r=0.382) with p value <0.003. Thus it can be concluded that there was a positive correlation between chronological age and skeletal age among all the subjects.

<p><strong>Introduction</strong>: the skeletal maturity of na individual can be evaluated through different methods and it is an important tool to the<br />diagnostic and treatment in othodontics. <strong>Objective</strong>: to verify the correlation between different methods of assessing bone maturation:<br />Carpal Maturation Index (CMI), Cervical Vertebrae Maturation Stages (CVM) and Dental Mineralization Stages (DM). <strong>Methodology</strong>:<br />the sample consisted of digitalized images of cephalometric, panoramic and hand and wrist radiographs of 73 patients. 50 were<br />selected for analysis. Two examiners were properly calibrated, through images analysis from another database. Inter and intraexaminer<br />reliability was measured by Kappa coefficient. The images were assessed according to Fishman (1982), Baccetti, Franchi and<br />McNamara Junior (2002) and Nolla (1960) methods. All images were coded and data of all analyzes was transferred to spreadsheets.<br />The data was processed in Matlab program for Windows, version 7.10.0, and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.<br /><strong>Results</strong>: the results demonstrated a positive correlation among bone maturity methods (CMI, CVM and DM), as well as between those<br />methods and chronological age. Females showed precocity in reaching the stages of skeletal maturation indicators and CVM compared<br />to males. It was observed that there was a correspondence between maturation methods for both genders. <strong>Conclusion</strong>: there was<br />a correlation between skeletal maturation assessment methods and dental mineralization in patients. Significant differences were<br />observed between genders for skeletal maturity assessment methods. There was a relation between the methods used for skeletal<br />maturation and dental mineralization, as well as chronological age.</p>

ABSTRACT Aim The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the open apex measurements of the lower teeth can be used for prediction of the pubertal growth spurt. Materials and methods The study group consisted of 150 males and 142 females ranging in age from 10 to 16 years. A total of 292 panoramic and 292 hand-wrist radiographs were obtained and analyzed. The skeletal maturity was determined according to the skeletal maturity indicators (SMIs) developed by Fishman. The open apices measurements of the left lower teeth were made according to the method described by Cameriere. Results The Spearman rank order correlation coefficient revealed a relationship between the skeletal maturity stages and the open apex measurements. These correlations ranged from 0.577 for the lower second premolar to 0.830 for the lower canine. The measurement of the left lower canine showed the highest correlation, so its relationship with the SMIs was further investigated. The measurements of 6.07 (or greater) indicated to SMI4, and 2.485 (or lesser) indicated to SMI7. Conclusion The skeletal maturity well related to the measurements of the open apices of the lower teeth. Lower canine open apex measurements could be used as an indicator of the SMI4 and SMI7. Clinical significance The measurements of the open apices of the left lower canines from panoramic radiographs may be clinically useful as an indicator of the beginning and the ending of the pubertal growth period.
