Islam and Modernity: A Case of Muslim Female Engineers in Malaysia

Malaysia is portrayed as one of the modern and developed Muslim nations. Its rapid modern development in physical structure impressed many people. However, little is known about the situation of its non-physical structure, particularly the religious and normative values. This paper rests on the stance that individuals’ religious values remain despite the nation’s effort towards modernisation, particularly in the relations of women and profession. To achieve the purpose, this article explores the paradoxes relating to the intricate relationships between the traditional feminine social expectations and modern engineering profession experienced by Muslim female engineers and students in Malaysia. The research is a structured interview design on thirty-six Muslim female engineers and engineering students. It found that there were potential self-presentation crises, particularly when women participated in a male-dominated workplace. The gendering issues in engineering overwhelmingly projected the collision between modernism and traditionalism. Such a blending situation depended on very careful management as being women with a clear expectation towards traditional feminine roles and responsibilities, while at the same time they have to present themselves in a business-like, modern manner in terms of competence, commitment and ambitious targets to claim a rightful place in the engineering world. Modernisation has not been able to change women’s traditional attitude. Though they may be modernised, educated and professional, these women are still traditional at heart.

The purpose of this article is to present the scale items, the statistical characteristics, and evidence of validity of the previously unpublished Beliefs about Learning and Teaching Questionnaire that examines elementary teachers’ epistemological beliefs and their beliefs about learning and teaching in inclusive classrooms. In this study, 186 teachers completed the questionnaire. Reliability analysis yielded a Cronbach’s alpha of .81. A factor analysis yielded four factors, including teachers’ beliefs about ability and their preferences for teacher-controlled and student-centred instruction. To examine the relationship between teachers’ beliefs about ability and their beliefs about disability and their responsibilities in working with students with disabilities, 36 teachers completed both the revised questionnaire and a semi-structured interview focused on beliefs and practices, the Pathognomonic-Interventionist Interview. The results suggest that teachers have varying beliefs about their roles and responsibilities in working with students with disabilities, and they provide evidence that these beliefs are related to their more widely held epistemological beliefs about ability. These range from a belief that ability is fixed and is unlikely to be influenced by learning and instruction, to a belief that ability is fluid and malleable, that it is increased by learning and therefore is responsive to instruction.

The aim of this study is to identify the target needs of preparatory classes for undergraduate programs which teach in foreign languages, in English. The differences between the target needs and the current level of the students constitute the subject of this study. The discrepancy model has been used as the need identification approach. In the discrepancy model, firstly the needs are identified, and then the deficiencies and current level are found. The study was formed in the qualitative research model and nineteen lecturers were included in the study to identify the needs of the study group. At the deficiencies and current level identification stage, the study group consisted of twenty three engineering students who has passed the preparatory class and are having the field courses. Furthermore, thirty two preparatory lecturers were also included in the study group to ascertain the current level. A structured interview form and a questionnaire were used as data collection tools. Data collected through interviews was analyzed with the content analysis method. Mean and standard deviation values were calculated in the analysis of the collected data. According to the study results, the students are equipped with general English skills in preparatory classes. It was also found that the students were given general English classes throughout the year, they focused on grammar and that students were provided with general speaking and writing skills for general subjects at a basic level. However, according to the views of students and lecturers who teaches in field courses, the gainings of preparatory English classes are not sufficient for the field courses. Students and lecturers are of the opinion that problems arise in the understanding and presentation of technical texts in English.

Abstract Hochschule Wismar, Germany, has been implementing Master programmes for international students since 1992. However, for most European universities, it is a rather new phenomenon. The purpose of the work is to analyse scientific literature on European higher education programmes for international students and to outline a theoretical framework of European higher education programmes for international students underpinning elaboration of new research question on master programmes for international engineering students. The research methodology comprises the study of the meaning of the key concepts of “framework”, “theoretical framework” and “international students”. Moreover, the logical chain of analysis is shown: theoretical framework → empirical study within a multicultural environment → conclusions. The case study research is applied. The empirical study was carried out at Hochschule Wismar, Germany in March 2017. Semi-structured interview served as the basis for data collection. The empirical findings allow complementing the elaborated theoretical framework consisting of the concepts on reasons for, language and impact of Masetr programme for international students with such a concept as European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Directions of further research are proposed. The novel contribution of the paper is the newly formulated research question on master programmes for international students.

Learner autonomy, which places the great emphasis on the learners’ independent roles and responsibilities in their learning process, has become the main concern of language education for over three past decades. It is important to investigate the language learners’ self-perception of their autonomous responsibilities, their possession of autonomous abilities, and their enactment of autonomous in-class and out-of-class behaviors. Thereby, the current study adopted features of a mixed-methods research design to examine these autonomous dimensions as perceived by university learners. A sample of eighty English-majored sophomores from Hung Vuong University, Vietnam was recruited for the current study. Their self-perception of autonomous language learning was elicited through two instruments of a thirty-two-item questionnaire and a nine-question semi-structured interview. Then the questionnaire data were quantitatively analyzed and the interview data were qualitatively analyzed. The results of this study indicated that the majority of the participants positively acknowledged the importance of learner autonomy, discerned their gained autonomous learning responsibilities, recognized their existing autonomous abilities, and unveiled some enacted autonomous learning behaviors inside and outside class.

In 2008, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) announced 14 Grand Challenges for Engineering in the 21st Century, a set of exceptionally complex problems associated with national security, quality of life, and a sustainable future. Understanding the extent to which engineering students are interested in these complex problems and the extent to which they feel confident that they can contribute to the solution of these problems could serve as a starting point to foster engagement with the Grand Challenges. This paper presents results from a survey of mechanical engineering (ME) students’ interest in the NAE Grand Challenges and their confidence in their ability to contribute to resolutions of the Challenges. Seventy-six sophomore mechanical engineering majors completed the survey composed of 36 examples of problems described within the NAE Challenge report. Survey results show a strong relationship between students’ interest and their confidence in meeting a challenge. Six students participated in a semi-structured interview regarding their experience with and knowledge of the Challenges. Interview results indicated the students had few course-related experiences that exposed them to the Challenges. Results of this study can contribute to a broader conversation among ME educators about ways to integrate the NAE Grand Challenges in undergraduate engineering education.
