Accurate assessment of pain by health-care professionals is essential to ensure optimal management of pain. An under-researched area is whether personality characteristics affect perception of pain in others. The aims were (a) to determine whether individual differences are associated with participants’ ability to assess pain, and (b) to determine facial cues used in the assessment of pain. One hundred and twenty-eight undergraduate students participated. They completed questionnaire assessments of empathy, pain catastrophizing, sensory sensitivity and emotional intelligence. They then viewed and rated four adult facial images (no, medium, and high pain—12 images total) using a 0–10 numerical rating scale, and noted the reasons for their ratings. (a) Empathy was the only characteristic associated with accuracy of pain assessment. (b) Descriptions of eyes and mouth, and eyes alone were most commonly associated with assessment accuracy. This was the case despite variations in the expression of pain in the four faces. Future studies could evaluate the effect on accuracy of pain assessment of (a) training empathic skills for pain assessment, and (b) emphasizing attention to the eyes, and eyes and mouth.

The relationship between job involvement, job satisfaction and job performance has been investigated. Differences in job involvement between the sexes and between full day and half day female employees were also researched. Two questionnaires and a graphic rating scale were applied to a sample of 164 clerical employees. Job involvement correlated significantly and positively with job performance and also with the different dimensions of job satisfaction. No significant differences regarding job involvement were found between the sexes and between full day and half day female employees. Conclusions are drawn from the results obtained and recommendations are made for future research.

Spondylolisthesis is forward slipping of upper vertebra in relations to its lower one, commonest is L4-L5. The ideal surgical treatment of spondylolisthesis is still controversial. Posterior lumber interbody fusion with pedicle fixation is one of treatment choices for the lumber spondylolisthesis. Forty patient who operated through posterior lumber interbody fusion and pedicle screw fixation by single surgeon was included from January 2012 to March 2015. Periodical follow-up was done both clinically and radiologically up to 6 months. Patient outcome was completed based on pain relief graphic rating scale and Oswestry disability index. In our series, the excellent outcome were 25 patients (62.5%), good were 12 patients (30%), and fair were 3 patients (7.5%). There were no poor outcome and no new neurological deficit. This study concludes that posterior lumber inter-body fusion with pedicle is an effective treatment for the lumber spondylolisthesis. It helps to maintain the biomechanics, associated with less complication and improve the quality of life of patient.

In Chapter 6 the authors argue that psychological measurement in the field of motivation and emotion is marked by a considerable degree of ambiguity, partly because these phenomena are poorly defined, but mainly because they are dynamic-motivation and emotion are about changes in behavior-while measurement designs and techniques predominantly address individual differences, which are typically assumed to be stable. The chapter discusses the merits and limitations of prevailing differential methods. It considers how researchers have tried to overcome the challenge of dynamic measurement with the help of state-trait models, noting that there are conceptual and logical problems that limit the use of these models. To overcome these problems, the authors propose a new measurement model, which focuses on individuals’ dynamic trajectories, and they show how this model can be used to describe subjects’ motivational states and to redefine traits in a dynamic way.
