A new procedure was presented with the objective of proving that it is the generalization of current attempts in designing compressed members and structures which is able to solve cases where other authors have problems. It is the further development of the former methods published by Chladný, Baláž, Agüero et al., which are based on the shape of the elastic critical buckling mode of the structure. Chladný’s method was accepted by CEN/TC 250 working groups creating Eurocodes. Both current Eurocodes EN 1993-1-1:2005 and EN 1999-1-1:2007 in their clauses 5.3.2(11) enable applying the geometrical equivalent unique global and local initial (UGLI) imperfection. The imperfection has the shape of the elastic critical buckling mode with amplitude defined in 5.3.2(11). UGLI imperfection is an alternative to the global sway and local bow initial imperfections defined in 5.3.2(3) and to the imperfections described in the clause 5.3.2(6). The determination of the location and value of UGLI imperfection proved to be onerous by some authors, especially in cases of members with variable cross-sections or/and axial forces. The paper also provides for special cases a procedure to detect the critical cross-section along the member which is defined as the one in which the utilization factor obtains maximum values. The new approach is validated by the investigation of five complex structures made of steel and one made of aluminum alloy solved by other authors. Comparisons of the results with those of other authors and with the Geometrically and Materially Nonlinear Analysis with Imperfections (GMNIA) results showed very good agreements with negligible differences. The information concerning the differences between current Eurocodes EN 1993-1-1:2005 and EN 1999-1-1:2007 is provided. Working drafts of Eurocodes of new generation prEN 1993-1-1:2020 and prEN 1999-1-1:2020 are also commented on.

The present work aims at developing a numerical study on the drug diffusion in the bloodstream in a coronary artery with drug-eluting stent implanted. The blood was modeled as a single-phase, incompressible and Newtonian fluid and the Navier–Stokes equation was approximated according to the Finite Element Method (FEM). The dynamics of drug-eluting concentration in bloodstream was investigated using four drug-eluting stents with different mass diffusivities in microchannels with variable cross sections, including a real coronary artery geometry with atherosclerosis. The results reveal complex drug concentration patterns and accumulation in the vicinity of the fat buildup.

The aim of the paper is to evaluate the effect of aluminum content on the oxidation resistance of new-generation of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloy at 1200 °C. Three grades of the alloy of chemical composition Fe-15Cr-xAl-4Y2O3 with different Al contents x = 0.3 wt.%, 2.0 wt.% and 5.5 wt.% are prepared by mechanical alloying. The alloys are consolidated by high temperature rolling followed by heat treatment. To study the oxidation resistance the samples are isothermally aged in the air for 1 h, 4 h, 16 h and 64 h at 1200 °C. The oxidation kinetics, composition and formation mechanism of the oxide layers are analyzed. The weight gain of prepared steels is estimated. The kinetics of oxidation is studied on metallographic cross-sections of the exposed samples by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis. The oxides on the surfaces are identified by X‑ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The Al content significantly enhances the oxidation resistance of the alloy. For a sufficiently high Al content in the alloy a compact oxide layer of α‑Al2O3 on the surface is formed, which significantly suppresses further oxidation process.

AbstractThe investigation of matching of endoprosthesis tibial components to the bone cross section is of interest for the manufacturer as well as for the surgeon. On the one hand, a systemic design of the prosthesis and the assortment is possible, on the other hand, a better matching implantation is enabled on the basis of experience of this study. CT sections were segmented manually using a CAD system and fitted by spline functions, then superseded with cross sections of the tibial component of a modified Hintermann H3 prosthesis. The principal moments of inertia, the direction of the principal axes and the area of the section were evaluated. Based on the relative differences of the principal moments of inertia, recommendations for application of the different prosthesis size and its selection with the surgery can be made.

Introduction: The upper lateral incisor is the most commonly missing tooth in the anterior segment. It leads to esthetic and functional imbalance for the patients. The ideal solution is the one that is most conservative and which fulfills the functional and esthetic needs of the concerned individual. Canine substitution is evolving to be the treatment of choice in most of the cases, because of its various advantages. These are special cases that need more time and effort from the clinicians due to space discrepancy in the upper and lower arches, along with the presentation of individual malocclusion. Aims and Objectives: Malocclusion occurring due to missing laterals is more complex, needing more time and effort from the clinicians because of space discrepancy, esthetic compromise, and individual presentation of the malocclusion. An attempt has been made in this article to review, evaluate, and tabulate the important factors for the convenience of clinicians. Method: All articles related to canine substitution were searched in the electronic database PubMed, and the important factors influencing the decision were reviewed. After careful evaluation, the checklist was evolved. Result: The malocclusions in which canine substitution is the treatment of choice are indicated in the tabular form for the convenience of clinicians. Specific treatment-planning considerations and biomechanics that can lead to an efficient and long-lasting result are also discussed. Conclusion: The need of the hour is an evidence-based approach, along with a well-designed prospective randomized control trial to understand the importance of each factor influencing these cases. Until that time, giving the available information in a simplified way can be a quality approach to these cases.

We propose a theoretical framework which can treat the nonresonant and the resonant inelastic light scattering on an equal footing in the form of correlation function, employing Keldysh–Schwinger functional integral formalism. The interference between the nonresonant and the resonant process can be also incorporated in this framework. This approach is applied to the magnetic Raman scattering of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic insulators. The entire set of the scattering cross-sections are obtained at finite temperature, the result for the resonant part agrees with the one obtained by the conventional Fermi golden rule at zero temperature. The interference contribution is shown to be very sensitive to the scattering geometry and the band structure.

The one-photon absorption (OPA) properties of tetrabenzoporphyrins (TBPs) and phthalocyanines (Pcs) were studied using the semiempirical ZINDO method and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), respectively. The compared results confirmed that the semiempirical ZINDO method was reasonably reliable when calculating the OPA of tetrabenzoporphyrins and phthalocyanines. On the basis of the OPA properties obtained from the ZINDO method, two-photon absorption (TPA) properties of two series of molecules were investigated, using ZINDO and sum-over-states (SOS) methods. The results showed that the TPA cross-sections of all molecules were in the range of 220.6 × 10–50 – 345.9 × 10–50 cm4·s·photon–1, which were in the same order of magnitude as the values reported in the literature. The relatively larger δ(ω) value for Pcs with respect to that for corresponding TBPs originates from larger intramolecular charge transfer, which can be characterized by the difference of dipole moment between S0 and S1 and the transition dipole moment between S1 and S5.Key words: two-photon absorption, ZINDO, sum-over-states, tetrabenzoporphyrin, phthalocyanines.

The scope of this work is to try to quantify the reduction of emissions due to COVID-19; an analysis covering the entire port of Naples will be presented. The explosion of the global pandemic from SARS-CoV-2 led to the adoption of local and global countermeasures aimed at containing contagions. The transportation sector, and in particular the passenger moving sector, was deeply affected; this almost total block of movements between regions and countries if, on the one hand, seriously slowed the economy, on the other, it drastically reduced the emissions on a global and local scale. In this work, the case study of the cruise ships berthed at the Maritime Station (Stazione Marittima) in the port of Naples is examined. The traffic of cruise ships during the lockdown and in the immediately following months was analysed and compared first with respect to the calendars scheduled for the same period and then with respect to the same months of 2019. The reduction in number of cruise ships and passengers were analysed and compared to the previous trends. The vessels collected, for 2019 and 2020 (both those that arrived and those that suffered the effects of the movement block) were subsequently characterized in terms of power and speed. Finally, an estimate of the emissions of NOX, SOX, CO2 produced and saved was carried out. The 2020 results will be compared with the hypothetical emissions that would have occurred in the absence of the lockdown and with those of the same period of the previous year.
