In the present scenario for the development of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), artificial intelligence plays an important role in path planning and obstacle detection. Due to different environments, it is always a task to achieve the proper moment for achieving the target goal while avoiding obstacles with minimum human interference. To achieve the goal with the avoidance of obstacles, individual optimization techniques with metaheuristic algorithms such as fuzzy, particle swarm optimization (PSO), etc. were implemented in various configurations. However, the optimal solution was not attained. Thus, in order to achieve an optimal solution, a hybrid model was developed by using the firefly algorithm and the fuzzy algorithm, establishing multiple features of the individual controller. The path and time optimization were achieved by a standalone controller and a hybrid firefly–fuzzy controller in different conditions, whereby the results of the controller were validated by simulation and experimental results, highlighting the advantages of the hybrid controller over the single controller.

Aimed at the problem of obstacle detection in farmland, the research proposed to adopt the method of farmland information acquisition based on unmanned aerial vehicle landmark image, and improved the method of extracting obstacle boundary based on standard correlation coefficient template matching and assessed the influence of different image resolutions on the precision of obstacle extraction. Analyzing the RGB image of farmland acquired by unmanned aerial vehicle remote sensing technology, this research got the following results. Firstly, we applied a method automatically registering coordinates, and the average deviations on the X and Y direction were 4.6 cm and 12.0 cm respectively, while the average deviations manually by ArcGIS were 4.6 cm and 5.7 cm. Secondly, with an improvement on the step of the traditional correlation coefficient template matching, we reduced the time of template matching from 12.2 s to 4.6 s. The average deviation between edge length of obstacles calculated by corner points extracted by the algorithm and that by actual measurement was 4.0 cm. Lastly, by compressing the original image on a different ratio, when the pixel reached 735 × 2174 (the image resolution reached 6 cm), the obstacle boundary was extracted based on correlation coefficient template matching, the average deviations of boundary points I of six obstacles on the X and Y were respectively 0.87 and 0.95 cm, and the whole process of detection took about 3.1 s. To sum up, it can be concluded that the algorithm of automatically registered coordinates and of automatically extracted obstacle boundary, which were designed in this research, can be applied to the establishment of a basic information collection system for navigation in future study. The best image pixel of obstacle boundary detection proposed after integrating the detection precision and detection time can be the theoretical basis for deciding the unmanned aerial vehicle remote sensing image resolution.

In order to control the position and attitude of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) better in different environments, this study proposed a hybrid control system with backstepping and PID method for eight-rotor UAV in different flight conditions and designed a switching method based on altitude and attitude angle of UAV. The switched process of hybrid controller while UAV taking off, landing, and disturbance under the gust is verified in MATLAB/Simulink. A set of appropriate controllers always matches to the flight of UAV in different circumstances, which can speed up the system response and reduce the steady-state error to improve stability. The simulation results show that the hybrid control system can suppress the drift efficiently under gusts, enhance the dynamic performance and stability of the system, and meet the position and attitude of flight control requirements.

The paper titled "Unmanned aerial vehicle pilot training" is focused on the analysis of unmanned aerial vehicle pilot training and the importance of using an unmanned flight simulator during the practical training of unmanned aerial vehicle pilots. For the realization of the paper, we used a device that served to measure the mental workload of unmanned aerial vehicle pilots during simulated and practical flight. Our experiment involved 5 unmanned aerial vehicle pilots in training who had zero or minimal flying experience. The aim of this work was to investigate to what extent mental workload acts on UAV pilots during simulated and practical flights. The measurements and their analysis showed that a much greater load is exerted on the pilots of unmanned aerial vehicles during practical flight. Through a primary experiment of already experienced pilots, we concluded that the majority of respondents would welcome the opportunity to use an unmanned flight simulator during their training. The paperconcludes with a summary of the individual measurement results, graphical representations of the respondents' answers, as well as an implementation design that could be applied to the training of UAV pilots.

Abstract The study investigates a thin-walled support platform for an unmanned aerial vehicle, i.e. aluminum beams connected by flat bars and angle irons. The construction is a kind of frame for a propulsion unit of the designed aircraft which is a combination of a multi-copter and a gyrocopter. This construction was tested for various load patterns to investigate the stresses and strains its profiles are connected. The load patterns correspond to different operation modes of the propulsion system, and the finite element method (FEM) and the SolidWorks software were used for the numerical calculations. The research was done for elastic operation of the individual components of the support platform. The analysis enabled to verify the state of stresses on the critical spots of the construction and to develop a construction for ground and flight tests to verify the correct operation of the propulsion control system and optimize its operation in different flight states.

Aiming at the problems of long search time and local optimal solution of ant colony algorithm (ACA) in the path planning of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), an improved ant colony algorithm (IACA) was proposed from the aspects of simplicity and effectiveness. The flight performance constraints of fixed wing UAVs were treated as conditions of judging whether the candidate expanded nodes are feasible, thus the feasible nodes’ number was reduced and the search efficiency was effectively raised. In order to overcome the problem of local optimal solution, the pheromone update rule is improved by combining local pheromone update and global pheromone update. The heuristic function was improved by integrating the distance heuristic factor with the safety heuristic factor, and it enhanced the UAV flight safety performance. The transfer probability was improved to increase the IACA search speed. Simulation results show that the proposed IACA possesses stronger global search ability and higher practicability than the former IACA.
