This paper examines why as part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Glasgow Life failed to achieve its aspired legacy of promoting further volunteering by Host City Volunteers (HCVs) despite the implementation of best practice. This practice included providing dedicated funding of a volunteer legacy programme, supporting recruitment from groups generally under-represented amongst regular volunteers, and the provision of a dedicated team to support HCVs before, during and after the event. Drawing on research conducted at the time of the event and a follow up study three years later, the paper suggests that the absence of such legacy arose because, although highly motivated by the one-off prestigious event, the event volunteers were less motivated by other opportunities, many of those involved as event volunteers were already committed volunteers, and were reluctant to take over responsibility for engaging with future volunteering opportunities. The paper considers the wider implications for future event managers seeking to generate volunteering legacies as part of major events. In so doing, it underlines that despite the scheme being constructed around the key characteristics of the much lauded benchmark model of event volunteering associated with the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games volunteering legacies cannot be guaranteed. Even when there is success in engaging with people markedly different to the common type of event volunteer in under-represented communities, translating their enthusiasm into post-event volunteering is problematic.

Purpose The effectiveness and usability of one-boxes have been subjects of much research and debate, as librarians have worked to evaluate and improve the tools’ effectiveness and functionality. As one-box technologies change and improve over time, librarians must learn to navigate their new features and limitations. This paper aims to report the results of a study that sought to determine whether or not one-box teaching practices and philosophies of librarians of Association of Research Libraries (ARL) changed between the fall of 2011 and the spring of 2016. Design/methodology/approach This study was conducted using the same survey questions that were sent to ARL instruction and reference librarians in October of 2011. The survey was e-mailed to the same librarians who responded to the original survey. Questions focused on how librarians use the one-box during instructional opportunities and their overall opinions on the one-box as an option. Findings There were similarities between the two studies in that librarians agreed that one-box search tools tended to be beneficial for novices as an entrée into library resources but not as valuable for significant research. Librarians also noted the need for improvement in the results and felt that the products did not live up to their hype. There was a slight shift from negative opinions to more neutral opinions, indicating that some librarians have become more accepting of the tool. This shift may reflect a gradual change that suggests that librarians have become more comfortable with or accustomed to the presence of the one-box and its features. Research limitations/implications Although this follow-up study was sent to all participants who had responded to the first study, fewer than 25 per cent of the original number responded to the survey in 2016. Originality/value This is the first study to examine the shift in practices and philosophies over the past five years of a select group of reference and instruction librarians.

A two-year follow-up study of 165 teenagers with conduct and emotional disorders treated as in-patients on a regional adolescent unit (YPU) is described. The target types of behaviour for each subject were scored independently by the teenager, the parent or guardian, and the professional referrer before admission and at one month, one year and two years after discharge. The significant overall improvement in behaviour observed at one month after discharge was sustained at one and two years. Thirty-three subjects who abandoned treatment within six weeks of admission had made significantly less progress than the fully treated group at one month after discharge, but there were no significant differences at the one- and two-year evaluations. Two years after treatment, between 69% and 79% of the 132 subjects who completed treatment were regarded as improved, depending on which respondent made the assessment. Adolescents who completed treatment had different characteristics from those who terminated treatment prematurely and were more likely to be girls in care referred by social services.

Context. In addition to the systematic observations of known solar-system objects (SSOs), a continuous processing of new discoveries requiring fast responses is implemented as the short-term processing ofGaiaSSO observations, providing alerts for ground-based follow-up observers. The common independent observation approach for the purposes of orbit computation has led to unrealistically large ephemeris prediction uncertainties when processing realGaiadata.Aims.We aim to provide ground-based observers with a cloud of sky positions that is shrunk to a fraction of the previously expected search area by making use of the characteristic features ofGaiaastrometry. This enhances the efficiency ofGaiaSSO follow-up network and leads to an increased rate of asteroid discoveries with reasonably constrained orbits with the help of ground-based follow-up observations ofGaiaasteroids.Methods.We took advantage of the separation of positional errors ofGaiaSSO observations into a random and systematic component. We treated theGaiaobservations in an alternative way by collapsing up to ten observations that correspond to a single transit into a single so-called normal point. We implemented this input procedure in theGaiaSSO short-term processing pipeline and the OpenOrb software.Results.We validate our approach by performing extensive comparisons between the independent observation and normal point input methods and compare them to the observed positions of previously known asteroids. The new approach reduces the ephemeris uncertainty by a factor of between three and ten compared to the situation where each point is treated as a separate observation.Conclusions.Our new data treatment improves the sky prediction for theGaiaSSO observations by removing low-weight orbital solutions. These solutions originate from excessive curvature of observations, introduced by short-term variations ofGaiaattitude on the one hand, and, as a main effect, shrinking of systematic error bars in the independent observation case on the other hand. We anticipate that a similar approach may also be utilized in a situation where observations from a single observatory dominate.

The results of a follow-up study of schizophrenics attending a centre in North West India are reported. The relevant literature is reviewed, The results were compared with two well-known studies, one from the United Kingdom and the other from Mauritius. The evidence presented suggests that the course taken by schizophrenia in a newly-developed city and its neighbourhood in this part of India is similar to the one seen in the Western world. This study does not support the view that chronicity of schizophrenia in non-European, non-white populations is different, at least in an urban setting.

Aim and methodTo follow up homeless people with psychoses treated by a dedicated team; changes in accommodation, risk behaviour, mental state and psychiatric care were examined.ResultsService uptake improved as did symptomatology and residential stability. However, substance use and criminality continued to be prevalent and a minority remained homeless.Clinical implicationsSpecialist psychiatric teams are a valuable adjunct to mainstream services in areas with high levels of homelessness.

Introduction: Stroke is the one of the common health problems world-wide causing significant morbidity and mortality. Various scales are framed and validated for use in stroke trials and clinical use. Most widely used scale for stroke assessment is NIHSS scale but this scale is infrequently used in routine clinical practice. This is because of various limitations like poor representation of posterior circulation deficit and predominant motor and language representation and poor representation of fine motor & cognition deficits in this scale. Objective: Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to formulate a daily monitoring scale which can objectively assess and prognosticate stroke patients. Present study aims to incorporate daily examined parameters in one instrument to develop a routinely useful tool for neurologist and physician which can be simple, fast, reliable, and reproducible. Method: We will include GCS score, brainstem reflexes, gaze, speech, distal and proximal motor power, inattention, ataxia, sensory deficits and gait examination parameters in proposed scale. After initial pilot study (15 patients), we will include developmental cohort (400 patients) and validation cohort (60 patients) to formulate and validate this study. Outcome measures will be 30 -day mortality and morbidity assessed at day 30 and 90 with modified Rankin score and Barthel index. Total patients included will be 460 patients with follow up for 3 months Results: It is expected to develop simple, reliable, and reproducible scale for monitoring of acute stroke patients.

Gjennom ei konseptualisering av lærarrollene ønskjer me å bidra til refleksjon omkring lærarpraksis og lærarutdanning for slik å utvikla diskursen rundt lærarprofesjonen.Nøkkelord: lærarrolle, klasseleiing, didaktisk intensjon, undervisningsdramaturgi, pedagogisk dømmekraftThe teacher’s roles - alternation between different teacher positions in didactic practicesAbstractThis is a follow-up study to an earlier study that explored teacher practice in which it was suggested that the teacher’s role is best understood by considering three main categories of activities: the directing, the supportive and the distal teacher role.Based on new data from primary school classrooms, where the teaching methods process drama and dramatization are used in subject teaching, we perform a dramaturgic didactic analysis of the participants’ actions and communication in the classroom. Our findings are categorized in three didactic aspects of the teacher role: i) the teacher`s positioning, ii) the teacher`s academic contribution and iii) the teacher`s interaction and communication with the students. Our findings highlight that each teacher role has its distinct, but sometimes overlapping characteristics and that each role represents certain teacher intensions. The teacher`s balancing of, on the one hand, the forms of teaching and on the other, what Biesta calls the multidimensional purpose of education places certain demands on the teacher’s professional judgment. Knowledge about these characteristics and intensions may help teachers and PSTs in their professional planning and analysis of their teaching, for instance in finding a balance between placing themselves in a directing, interactive or distal position in the students’ qualification process, e.g. if their purpose is education for the students, together with the students or by the students in interaction with each other and different learning media. Conceptualizing the three teacher-roles might contribute to the development of the discourse on teaching professionalism. Keywords: teacher role, classroom management, didactic intention, the dramaturgy of education, pedagogical judgment
