In the current chapter, the authors intend to present the strengths and the weaknesses from the standpoint of graphic computing, managing and productive computing, and the human factors that prevent boosting on-line sales. They analyze the reality of several businesses or industries, which are gathered under the word “group” and belong to the textile sector with high profits because of the high volume of invoicing, a hundred-year-old tradition, with important customers of the European, American, and Asian international fashion, etc. in a northern Italian region known as Lombardy. Paradoxically, the textile sector in that region, like others in Europe, is one of the environments where computing and the breakthroughs and the advantages in new technologies are difficult to introduce these days. The human factor is the main cause because of organizational structures of a vertical and/or family type.

Cost-efficient designs of aluminum autobody structures consist mainly of stampings using conventional technology. Progress in metallurgy and forming processes has enabled aluminum body panels to achieve significant market share, particularly for hoods. Fast bake hardening alloys with better hemming performance were developed for improved outer panel sheet products. Specific guidelines for handling and press working were established to form aluminum panels using similar schedules and production lines as steel parts. Stamping productivity was improved by optimization of the trimming process to reduce sliver/particle generation and resulting end-of-line manual rework. Both hemming formability and trimming quality not only depend on tooling setup but also on microstructural features, which govern intrinsic alloy ductility. Targets for the next high volume aluminum car body applications, such as roof panels and doors, require higher strength and/or better formability. The challenges of complex stampings can be met with optimized alloys and lubricants, with improved numerical simulation to fine-tune stamping process parameters, and with the introduction of new technologies. Warm forming was examined as a potential breakthrough technology for high volume stamping of complex geometries.

The present paper provides a brief history of Electronic Data Processing Systems and their supporting user documentation. The problems inherent to paper documentation are highlighted. Techniques employed to improve on-line reject messages in addition to the development of an online user documentation system are discussed. Future challenges facing the human factors specialist involved in development of on-line documentation are outlined.

Purpose In the past decade, the development of the global economy, the change in organizational structures and the maturing of new technologies have led to considerable changes in business structures. Emergency situations, such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic, have led many companies to declare bankruptcy. In this context, the present study aims to analyze strategic opinions of company executives in a declaration of bankruptcy. Design/methodology/approach To this end, an innovative approach is applied to strategic management and business. First, the authors conducted 14 interviews with executives, and the interview data were transcribed. Second, using textual analysis and data mining techniques, the transcripts were analyzed to understand the importance of indicators identified as relevant in companies in a declaration of bankruptcy. Findings This resulted in identification of 10 relevant indicators perceived by executives to avoid or anticipate a state of bankruptcy, including innovation, business adaptability, room for improvement in production processes, time to react to situations of alarm, layoffs, support from public institutions, suppliers, international and national regulations, impact on the industry, credits and debts. Originality/value The paper concludes with a discussion of important theoretical and practical implications of these findings for the industry. Also, strategic management decision-making strategies are presented as a result of the innovative textual analysis approach used.

Abstract Clinical drug development is a complex and extensive process that entails multiple stakeholders alongside patients, requires large capital expenditures and takes nearly a decade on average to complete. To ensure the correct development of this process, rigorous quality activities must be conducted to assess and guarantee the Good Clinical and Pharmacovigilance Practices (GxP) for study compliance. For about 25 years, most of these activities have been performed in the form of audits, which implies a high volume of manual work and resources in addition to being reactive by nature. Due to the limitations of this approach, together with intent to leverage new technologies in the data analytics field, a more holistic, proactive and data-driven approach needed to take place. For this to happen, quality assurance expertise needed to be complemented by the data literacy skillset. To achieve this, the Data Analytics University (DAU) was created. An in-house training program composed by two pathways that provided a framework for clinical quality staff to develop their data analytics capabilities. The first pathway covers the basics of statistics, probability and data-related terminology, while the second deepens further into the topics covered in the former followed by hands-on activities to put the knowledge to test. After successful completion of 15 DAU sessions, over 310 trained staff were able to apply their learning on data analytics and solve potential issues that might arise with a given dataset. In the near future, the DAU will be made available externally as an e-learning training program.

Las nuevas tecnologías de la información y la comunicación son una realidad que hay que afrontar, también desde la formación del profesorado de primaria y secundaria, pues representan un recurso cada día más imprescindible en nuestra vida y unas herramientas adecuadas para la preparación presente y futura del alumnado. Desde el Centro del Profesorado Cuevas-Olula (Almería) se ha realizado una actividad de teleformación dirigida al profesorado de Educación Física, trabajando distintos contenidos curriculares de actividades en el medio natural, y buscando poner de manifiesto que todas las áreas del conocimiento pueden y deben adaptarse a las nuevas tecnologías. Esta actividad de formación demuestra el gran interés e implicación de maestros y profesores de Educación Física en la propia actualización y utilización de los recursos TIC. La evaluación del curso, realizada por los propios participantes, evidencia la validez y el éxito del modelo de formación utilizado, con una parte teórico-práctica desarrollada on-line y con actividades prácticas presenciales al final, así como la valoración de las virtudes de la formación a distancia en comparación con la presencial y tradicional.Abstract: The new technologies of information and communication are a reality that must be confronted, from teacher training to primary and secondary schools, since they represent a resource increasingly indispensable in our lives and about proper tools for the preparation of the present and future students. From the Center Teacher Cuevas-Olula (Almeria) has been engaged in an activity distance to the faculty of Physical Education, working different curricula activities in the natural environment, and seeking to demonstrate that all areas of knowledge can and should adapt to new technologies. This training demonstrates the keen interest and involvement of teachers and professors of Physical Education at the updating and resource use ICT. The course evaluation, conducted by the participants themselves, will evidence the validity and success of the training model used, with a party line developed theoretical and practical sessions at the end, as well as the valuation of the virtues of distance learning compared with the personal and traditional one.

Spatial Data Warehouses (SDWs) and Spatial On-Line Analytical Processing (SOLAP) systems are new technologies for the integration and the analysis of huge volume of data with spatial reference. Spatial vagueness is often neglected in these types of systems and the data and analysis results are considered reliable. In a previous work, the authors provided a new design method for SOLAP datacubes that allows the handling of vague spatial data analysis issues. The method consists of tailoring SOLAP datacubes schemas to end-users tolerance levels to identified potential risks of misinterpretation they encounter when exploiting datacubes containing vague spatial data. It this paper, the authors further their previous proposal by presenting different formal tools to support their method: it is an UML profile providing stereotypes needed to add vague, risks and tolerance levels information on datacubes schemas plus the formal definition of SOLAP datacubes schemas transformation process and functions.

In spite of a long history of automated instruments being deployed in the water industry, only recently has the difficulty of extracting timely insights from high-grade, high-volume data sets become an important problem. Put simply, it is now relatively easy to be “data-rich”, much less easy to become “information-rich". Whether the availability of so many data arises from “technological push” or the “demand pull” of practical problem solving is not the subject of discussion. The paper focuses instead on two issues: first, an outline of a methodological framework, based largely on the algorithms of (on-line) recursive estimation and involving a sequence of transformations to which the data can be subjected; and second, presentation and discussion of the results of applying these transformations in a case study of a biological system of wastewater treatment. The principal conclusion is that the difficulty of transforming data into information may lie not so much in coping with the high sampling intensity enabled by automated monitoring networks, but in coming to terms with the complexity of the higher-order, multi-variable character of the data sets, i.e., in interpreting the interactions among many contemporaneously measured quantities.
