This study reveals the successful low pressure cold spray deposition of near-uniform, defect free and dense copper coatings approximately 700-1900 µm thick, on Al alloy for electro-technical applications. The micro structural characteristics of the deposits have been studied using the combined techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electron-probe micro analysis (EPMA). The coatings exhibited characteristic splat-like, layered morphologies due to the deposition of solid powder particles which appeared to have been plastically deformed on impact to the substrate. The developed coatings have a dense (in the range of 3090-5015 kg/m3)and nearly uniform microstructure, with almost uniform hardness values in the range of 120 -140 Hv, and electrical conductivity in the range of 23-30 MS/m. EDAX, XRD and EPMA results revealed that the main constituent in the coating is Cu.

3Y-TZP powder has been successfully synthesized by gel solid-state method. The structural phases of powder particles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and the morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The average size of grains was 230 nm. The sintering behavior, mechanical properties and microstructure of 3Y-TZP ceramics sintered by this powder were investigated. The experiment results showed that the mechanical properties of ceramics were excellent.

Nanocrystalline FeNi and Ni 3 Fe alloys were prepared by mechanical alloying of Fe and Ni elemental powders using a planetary ball mill under protection atmosphere. X-ray diffraction measurements were performed to follow alloy formation process in these alloys. A heat treatment of 1 h at 800°C was carried out to relax the internal stresses of the milled samples. Morphological evolution of powder particles was revealed by scanning electron microscopy. The value of lattice parameter was reached to 0.35762 nm and the hardness was found to be 686 HV at 30 h milled FeNi powder. In the case of Ni 3 Fe the values of 0.3554 nm and 720 HV were obtained for lattice parameter and hardness, respectively.

As a hazardous waste, water pickling liquors must be properly treated. An alternative consists of promoting the formation of ferrous salts from this residue due to their higher ferrous content. Since FeCl2·4H2O is widely used in several applications, obtaining pure crystals of this material appears to be an interesting prospect. However, this compound has scarcely been investigated. In the present work, FeCl2·4H2O crystals were obtained from water pickling liquors. Their structural and morphological characteristics were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy as well as Mössbauer spectroscopy. In addition, the photoluminescence study of the obtained samples was also assessed. It was observed that after some aging time, the obtained crystals changed in colour from green to more yellowish. As such, the aged sample was also evaluated, and their structural characteristics were compared with the original crystals. Despite this, the obtained crystals exhibit a FeCl2·4H2O structure, which is not modified with the aging of the sample.

The present study is focused on the evaluation of the aging behaviour and microstructure characterization of AA2124/SiC/25p composite under the aging temperatures of 180, 185 and 190 °C for various dwelling time ranging from 0 up to 100 hours. The microstructure was characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy. The hardness, energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis and X-ray diffraction measurements were also performed to evaluate the characteristics of aged AA2124/SiC/25p composite. The results show that the hardness values of as-received composite were considerably improved up to two third by the subsequent aging. The hardness increasing was attributed to the presence of CuAl2, Al4SiC4 and precipitation phases in aged AA2124/SiC/25p composite.

Atomic-Force Microscopy (AFM) has become an effective tool in the three dimensional characterization of biological systems and is capable of Angstrom sensitivity in the vertical dimension. One unresolved dilemma is that the observed height (diameter) of B-DNA being about 10Å, is less than half its x-ray diffraction value. In this paper we attempt to determine the source of this discrepancy by comparing plasmid DNA co-deposited with a novel form of DNA called “G-wires” (Figure 1). G-wires are formed by G-rich sequences. They are composed of G-4 DNA, a quadruple helical structure. X-ray data of G-4 DNA gives a diameter of 27Å, comparable to that expected for B-DNA (20 to 25Å). In the AFM these structures have a significantly greater height (av. = 22 Å) compared to double stranded (av. = 7 Å) or supercoiled B-DNA (av. = 14 Å) (Figure 2). Thus, the apparent height of nucleic acids in the AFM is dependent upon their innate structural characteristics.

An innovative spray deposition technique has been applied to produce in situ TiB2/Zn-30Al-1Cu composites. The microstructures of the spray-deposited composite were studied using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The results have shown that the TiB2particulates are formed in the microstructure. It was found that the TiB2particles were distributed in Zn-30Al-1Cu matrix uniformly, and the TiB2particles are about 2μm in size.

Nanocrystalline LiMn2O4 powder was synthesized by sol-gel method using citric acid as a chelating agent. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Differential thermal analysis (DTA), Impedance spectroscopy (IS) and Electrochemical measurements. The powder particles having slight agglomeration characteristics were found to have prismatic morphology and a wider size distribution from 50 nm to 200 nm, which provides good packing density of the material. The electrical conductivity of the powder at room temperature is in the order of ~10-5 S/cm. The structural stability of LiMn2O4 cubic spinel over the temperature range of battery operation was assessed. Electrochemical performance of the material shows a discharge capacity of ~130 mAh/gm.
