The key technology of the cutter that cutting hardened steel was researched by high speed milling machining method. At first ,three cutting elements of high speed milling machining was narratived, and we can obtain the principle of selection of parameters of cutting velocity, feed per tooth, longitudinal cutting depth and cutting width of axial, etc. With HSM ,we discussed the performance and selection points of tool material of coated cemented carbide, ceramic, cubic boron nitride , synthetic diamond and so on, and obtained the effect of the main tool geometry for the cutting process in HSM. The second, it analysised type and reason of damage of high speed cutting tools, and introduced three detection methods of tools. Finally, it was summarized and concluded.

Abstract PCBN (Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride) cutting tools have become very familiar in the industries for cutting hardened steel parts and the demand for PCBN tools is growing rapidly. One of the reasons for this is the trend of replacing grinding processes with cutting. Although the trend of processing is to use more cutting, there still remains grinding in many processing fields. High precision machining and high speed interrupted machining have been such fields. In this study it has been verified that a novel cutting method can be applied to high precision machining with the smoothness of Rz 0.8 μm and that a new PCBN has sufficient reliability against tool failure in high speed (< 250m/min) interrupted cutting. Thus cutting has become applicable to those machining and the trend of replacement of grinding with cutting will be enhanced. Those new technologies will be introduced in this report.

The aluminum base microwave printed circuit board has the wide application foreground in high-tech fields. But the insulating layer of PCB is a difficult-to-machining material. In this paper, the experimental research on the wear mechanics and cutting coating comparison in high speed milling of the Rogers 6002 micro wave PCB. TiN and TiAlN coated cemented carbide cutting tool are select to milling the micro wave PCB. The effect of milling parameters and cutting length on cutting force is investigated. SEM is used to observe the wear morphology of the flank face of cutting tools. Research results show the wear mechanisms of coated tool include abrasive wear and adhesive wear. TiAlN coating is more suitable for high milling the insulating layer of microwave PCB because of its high hardness and wear resistance. The research results are contributive to choose proper high-speed cutting tools and parameters.

Micro carbide endmills suffer severe abrasive friction and impact wear in high speed milling of graphite. This paper focused on the study of the effect of Co content and WC grain size on the tool wear resistance of micro carbide endmills in high speed milling of graphite. The tool wear morphologies of cutting tools were examined at the initial wear stage and severe wear stage. The results showed that the abrasive resistance of micro carbide endmill increased with the decrease of Co content and WC grain size. The best impact resistance can be obtained with medium Co content and smaller WC grain size. The fine-grained carbide 0.2WC-8%Co is considered as the optimum tool material for high speed milling of graphite.

This article discusses the issue of hardened steel machining. Many components in the engineering industry use hardening as the final heat treatment. These components usually occupy a significant position in a given assembly unit. They guarantee the correct operation of the entire technical equipment in total cooperation with other components. The quality of these components depends on the integrity of their surface. The production of these parts is usually carried out by traditional technological procedures. Clearly, an example of such a technology is grinding. However, this article discusses the application of other finishing technologies using a tool material made of cubic boron nitride (CBN). The technology used is finishing turning with subsequent tumbling technology. The subject of the evaluation is the integrity of the surface. In this part of the experiments, there are mainly individual parameters of surface roughness. Compared components are bearing rings, in this case the inner surface of the housing ring.

High speed milling experiments using nitrogen-oil-mist as cutting medium were undertaken to investigate the characteristics of tool wear for Ti-6Al-4V Alloy, a kind of important and commonly used titanium alloy in the aerospace and automobile industries. Uncoated carbide tools have been applied in the experiments. The cutting speed was 300 m/min. The axial depth of cut and the radial depth of cut were kept constant at 5.0 mm and 1.0 mm, respectively. The feed per tooth was 0.1 mm/z. Optical and scanning electron microscopes have been utilized to determine the wear mechanisms of the cutting tools, and energy spectrum analysis has been carried out to measure the elements distribution at the worn areas. Meanwhile, comparisons were made to discuss the influence of different cutting media such as nitrogen-oil-mist and air-oil–mist upon the tool wear. The results of this investigation indicate that the tool life in nitrogen-oil-mist is significantly longer than that in air-oil-mist, and nitrogen-oil-mist is more suitable for high speed milling of Ti-6Al-4V alloy than air-oil-mist.

Micro-cutting is a core technology for producing micro-injection moulds. High demands on geometric accuracy and surface roughness require high-strength materials. However, current milling tools for micro-cutting suffer from excessiv tool wear. A solution is offered by cutting materials based on cubic Boron Nitride (cBN), which have been used successfully in macro-machining. This article contains detailed information on the machining of hardened steel with micro-milling tools and cutting edges made of cBN.

For the excellent properties, super-hard tool material has received much attention from researchers. The development of super-hard tool material for high-speed cutting could brought high machining quality and surface precision. For an engineer, adopt high performance of tool material, for example wearing resistance, high stability of PCD (polycrystalline diamond) and PCBN (poly cubic boron nitride) can get more information for obtaining higher finished surface quality that cannot acquire just by common cutting process. This paper introduces super-hard cutters materials (PCD and PCBN) development, and discusses several material properties. The features of materials used in different cutting fields are given.
