The characteristics of tunnel fire are analyzed, and the numerical simulation of some tunnel of Shenyang railway is made with the CFD software star-ccm+ 5.02, which applies the field modeling method. A comprehensive understanding of tunnel fire characteristics and flue gas development are obtained, through analyzing the concentration field and temperature field, which may provide the theoretical background for evacuation design in tunnel fire. The effective measures of fire rescue and evacuation are also put forward.

The physical and mathematical turbulence flow fields models are set up to numerically simulate railway tunnel fire and smoke flow. An experimental fire simulation results in railway tunnel indicate that the temperature distribution of laminar flame, the smoke concentration and flow velocity can be expressed by the fully developed smoke flow downwind. Through numerical simulation, it is concluded that the turbulent flow field models are better and have good consistency with the experimental results. The phenomenon of tunnel fire, the development and distribution of smoke flow can not only provide great support on the fire protecting and ventilation plan, but also give better reference to the pedestrian evacuation and the design of disaster prevention and mitigation.

Taiwan is an island nation with numerous mountains and few plains. Consequently, the number of tunnel projects has gradually increased and tunnels are becoming longer. Because the number of large tunnels that exceed 1000 meters in length has increased, the effective escape and evacuation of people during a fire and the minimization of injury are crucial to fire protection engineers. For this study, an actual example of a fire that occurred in Hsuehshan Tunnel (12.9 kilometers and the longest tunnel in Southeast Asia) was used. A fire dynamics simulator (FDS) including numerical simulation software was applied to analyze this fire and the relevant information that was collected was compared and verified. The fire site simulation showed the escape and evacuation of people during the fire. Simulations of the original fire site and the possible escape time for people with various attributes were discussed to provide quantitative data and recommendations based on the analysis results, which can serve as a reference for fire protection engineering.

Calculation fluid dynamics software Fluent was used to conduct three-dimensional numerical simulation on gas-liquid two-phase flow field in a wet flue gas desulfurization scrubber. The k-ε model and SIMPLE computing were adopted in the analysis. The numerical simulation results show that the different gas entrance angles lead to internal changes of gas-liquid two-phase flow field, which provides references for reasonable parameter design of entrance angle in the scrubber.

The combustion process of municipal solid waste (MSW) in a operating 750t/d grate furnace in Guangzhou was researched by means of numerical simulation. The influence of MSW moisture content on burning effect was discussed. The results show that: with the moisture content dropped from 50% to 30%, the heat value could be evaluated from 13.72% to 54.91% and the average temperature in the furnace could be promoted 90-248°C. However, the combustible gases and particle in the flue gas of outlet would take up a high proportion since lacking of oxygen would lead to an incomplete combustion. The excess air coefficient should be increased to 2.043~2.593 in order to ensure the flue gas residence time more than 2s and temperature in the furnace higher to 800°C.
