Permeability of Lightweight Aggregate Concrete with Mineral Admixture

This paper presents an experimental study on the permeability and the pore structure of lightweight concrete with fly ash, zeolite powder, or silica fume, in comparison to that of normal weight aggregate concrete. The results showed that the mineral admixtures can improve the anti-permeability performance of lightweight aggregate concrete, and mixed with compound mineral admixtures further more. The resistance to chloride-ion permeability of light weight concrete was higher than that of At the same strength grade, the anti-permeability performance of lightweight aggregate concrete is better than that of normal weight aggregate concrete. The anti-permeability performance of LC40 was similar to that of C60. Mineral admixtures can obviously improve the pore structure of lightweight aggregate concrete, the total porosity reduced while the pore size decreased.

High performance concrete (HPC) with a water/cement ratio (w/c) of 0.32 and different lightweight aggregate (LWA) contents (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) were prepared, and the influence of LWA on concrete frost-resistance and impermeability at different ages were studied, as well as the hydration degree, hydrated product, pattern and pore structure of the paste around aggregate. The results show that, by replacing normal weight aggregate (NWA) with 50% and 100% volume contents of pre-wetted LWA respectively, the chemical bound water of the cement paste surrounding aggregate are increased 12.1% and 22.7% as compared to concrete mixed without LWA. And at 28 days, lightweight aggregate concrete has the highest Ca(OH)2 content, whereas the 90-day Ca(OH)2 content of normal weight concrete is the highest. This proves that, with the increase of LWA content in concrete, both of the internal curing effect of pre-wetted LWA and secondary hydration effect of fly ash (FA) are strengthened, this can also be verified by the SEM study. Furthermore, the pore structure of the cement paste around aggregate can be improved consequently. The performance of frost-resistance of HPC can be improved by mixing LWA, the 90 day-frost-resistance of lightweight aggregate concrete is about 2.5 times of that of concrete mixed without LWA. The influence of LWA on the impermeability of HPC is different from normal concrete. When LWA content is more than 50%, the HPC impermeability decreased obviously, however at later age the difference between them becomes minor.

In this study, the fixed water/binder ratio is 0.40, four mineral admixtures: fly ash (FA), blast furnace slag (BFS), desulphurization slag (DLS), and glass LED powder (GLP), were added to lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC), replacing 10% or 30% of the cement content, to study their heat insulation efficiency and engineering performance and to compare the economic impact of mineral admixtures on LWAC. In terms of heat insulation, the thermal conductivity (K value) of the controlled sample was 0.484 kcal/(m.h. °C) and the addition of mineral admixtures changed the concrete unit weight and water absorption ratio, thus reducing the K value by 0.41% to 25.71% and improving the heat insulation. As the mineral admixture hydration products and chemical contents differed, the heat insulation of the LWAC varied as well. The study indicated that the heat insulation is the greatest in concrete with the addition of 30% FA, followed by concrete with the addition of 10% GLP. The addition of mineral admixtures is 30%, the resistivity is 72–455% of the control group, and the resistivity of FA and GLP is higher than the control group. The study is indicated that the proper addition of mineral powder material has an apparent effect on increasing heat insulation efficiency.

Structural lightweight aggregate concrete offers several benefits as compared to the normal weight concrete. Most common methods of producing structural lightweight concrete is by using artificial lightweight aggregates. However, the cost of the production of artificial lightweight aggregates is high due to energy and raw materials consumption. The use of waste and by-product materials as lightweight aggregate in concrete can provide a better solution to reducing the negative impact of the concrete industry. This paper reports an investigation to produce structural lightweight aggregate concrete by utilizing the locally available solid waste materials, namely oil palm shell (OPS) and oil-palm-boiler clinkers (OPBC) as coarse lightweight aggregates. Two different mix proportions were studied. In the first concrete mix, just OPS was used as coarse aggregate. However, 40% of OPS (by volume) of the first mix was replaced with OPBC in the second mix. The test results showed that by replacing OPS with OPBC, it directly affects the characteristics of the lightweight concrete. The 28-days compressive strength of the blended coarse lightweight aggregate concrete was significantly increased compared to OPS concrete.

This paper aims to investigate the structural behavior of reinforced lightweight concrete beams. Attapulgite aggregate and crushed clay brick aggregate were used as coarse lightweight aggregate to produce structural lightweight aggregate concrete with 25 Mpa and 43.6 Mpa cube compressive strength and 1805 Kg/m3 and 1977 Kg/m3 oven dry density respectively. The result of reinforced lightweight concrete beams compared with reinforced normal weight concrete beams, which have 50.5 Mpa cylinder compressive strength and 2317 Kg/m3 oven dry density. For each type of concrete two reinforced concrete beams with (1200 mm length × 180 mm height × 140 mm width), one of them tested under symmetrical two-points load STPL (a/d = 2.2) and another one tested under one-point load OPL (a/d=3.3) at 28 days. The experimental program shows that a structural lightweight aggregate concrete can be produced by using Attapulgite aggregate with 25 MPa cube compressive strength and 1805 Kg/m3 oven dry density and by using crushed clay brick aggregate with 43.6 MPa cube compressive strength and 1977 Kg/m3 oven dry density. The weight of Attapulgite aggregate concrete and crushed clay bricks aggregate concrete beam specimens were lower than normal weight aggregate concrete beams by about 20.56% and 13.65% respectively at 28 days.  As for the ultimate load capacities of beam specimens, the ultimate load of Attapulgite aggregate concrete beams tested under STPL were lower than that of crushed clay bricks aggregate concrete beams and normal weight aggregate concrete beams by about 4.85% and 5% respectively. While the ultimate load capacities of reinforced Attapulgite concrete beams tested under OPL were lower than that of reinforced crushed clay bricks aggregate concrete beams and reinforced normal weight aggregate concrete beams by about 10.3% and 10.5% respectively. Finally, Attapulgite aggregate concrete and crushed clay bricks aggregate concrete showed ductility and toughness less than that of Normal weight aggregate concrete.

Nowadays lightweight concrete is used on a large scale for structural purposes and to reduce the self-weight of structures. Specific grav- ity, compressive strength, strength/weight ratio and modulus of elasticity are important factors in the mechanical behavior of structures. This work studies these properties in lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) and normal-weight concrete (NWC), comparing them. Spe- cific gravity was evaluated in the fresh and hardened states. Four mixture proportions were adopted to evaluate compressive strength. For each proposed mixture proportion of the two concretes, cylindrical specimens were molded and tested at ages of 3, 7 and 28 days. The modulus of elasticity of the NWC and LWAC was analyzed by static, dynamic and empirical methods. The results show a larger strength/ weight ratio for LWAC, although this concrete presented lower compressive strength.

Expanded shale lightweight aggregates, as the coarse aggregates, were used to produce lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) in this research. At the fixed water-cement ratio, paste quantity, and aggregate volume, the effects of various aggregate gradations on the engineering properties of LWAC were investigated. Comparisons to normal-weight concrete (NWC) made under the same conditions were carried out. From the experimental results, using normal weight aggregates that follow the specification requirements (standard gradation) obtained similar NWC compressive strength to that using uniform-sized aggregates. However, the compressive strength of LWAC made using small uniform-sized aggregates was superior to that made from standard-grade aggregates. This is especially conspicuous under the low water-cement ratio. Even though the workability was affected, this problem could be overcome with developed chemical additive technology. The durability properties of concrete were approximately equal. Therefore, it is suggested that the aggregate gradation requirement of LWAC should be distinct from that of NWC. In high strength LWAC proportioning, following the standard gradation suggested by American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is optional.

The paper presents the results of tests conducted on two lightweight aggregate concretes made of new national Certyd artificial aggregate. This research is intended to first application of lightweight concrete to construct large-span post-tensioned slab. In addition to mechanical properties development, shrinkage and creep during 3 months of loading were tested. The obtained results are compared with theoretical results predicted by standard. Conducted tests indicated, that measured values of shrinkage and creep are significantly lower than predicted ones. This is promise for application of tested concrete in construction of post-tensioned slabs.

Purpose In this study, the insulation fire ratings of lightweight foamed concrete, autoclaved aerated concrete and lightweight aggregate concrete were investigated using finite element modelling. Design/methodology/approach Lightweight aggregate concrete containing various aggregate types, i.e. expanded slag, pumice, expanded clay and expanded shale were studied under standard fire and hydro–carbon fire situations using validated finite element models. Results were used to derive empirical equations for determining the insulation fire ratings of lightweight concrete wall panels. Findings It was observed that autoclaved aerated concrete and foamed lightweight concrete have better insulation fire ratings compared with lightweight aggregate concrete. Depending on the insulation fire rating requirement of 15%–30% of material saving could be achieved when lightweight aggregate concrete wall panels are replaced with the autoclaved aerated or foamed concrete wall panels. Lightweight aggregate concrete fire performance depends on the type of lightweight aggregate. Lightweight concrete with pumice aggregate showed better fire performance among the normal lightweight aggregate concretes. Material saving of 9%–14% could be obtained when pumice aggregate is used as the lightweight aggregate material. Hydrocarbon fire has shown aggressive effect during the first two hours of fire exposure; hence, wall panels with lesser thickness were adversely affected. Originality/value Finding of this study could be used to determine the optimum lightweight concrete wall type and the optimum thickness requirement of the wall panels for a required application.
