Tuning the concentration of nanoparticles (NPs) to accommodate wider application demanded a better understanding of the physicals and structural properties of the glass. A series of zinc phosphate glasses with the composition of (57-x) P2O5- 40ZnO-3Tb2O3 –xCuO, (0 ≤ x ≤ 2 mol %) has been prepared by melt quenching technique and their physical and optical characterization have been studied. The X-Ray Diffraction technique and UV-Vis Spectroscopy have been used to characterize the glass sample. The XRD confirms the amorphous nature of the prepared glasses. The physical properties of glasses with different CuO NPs such as density, molar volume, refractive index and electronic polarizability are determined. It is found that both density and molar volume decreases with increasing CuO NPs concentration. The optical band gap (4.54 eV-2.96 eV) and the Urbach energy (0.19 eV-0.54 eV) are showing a decreasing trend with the increasing amount of CuO NPs.This is due to the formation of non-bridging oxygen, (NBO) in the glass network. The glass exhibits high refractive index ~2.40 and polarizability ~1.12 ×10-23 cm3 and is useful for solid-state laser and optoelectronic devices.

The phosphate glasses, with composition (60-x)P2O5-25ZnO-(15+x)Li2O where 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 5.0 mol% are prepared by conventional melt quenching method. The amorphous nature of the glass is determined by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The physical properties are measured in term of their density and molar volume. Glass density is found to increase from 2.700 to 2.785 g cm-3 whereas molar volume is found to decrease from 40.735 to 37.488 cm3 mol-1 with respect to Li2O content. The DC measurements are done by using four point probes and the activation energies are determined. Arrhenius plot shows straight line behavior as observed that confirmed the conductivity increased with Li2O content. The activation energy is found to decreases from 0.75 to 0.08 eV as Li2O content is increased in the temperature range from 310 to 420 K. Measurements of the thermal conductivity using Lee’s disc apparatus have been made. It is observed that the maximum and minimum thermal conductivity are 0.2679 and 0.2168 W m-1 K-1 respectively.

Herein, CuO-NPs were fabricated by harnessing metabolites of Aspergillus niger strain (G3-1) and characterized using UV–vis spectroscopy, XRD, TEM, SEM-EDX, FT-IR, and XPS. Spherical, crystallographic CuO-NPs were synthesized in sizes ranging from 14.0 to 47.4 nm, as indicated by TEM and XRD. EDX and XPS confirmed the presence of Cu and O with weight percentages of 62.96% and 22.93%, respectively, at varied bending energies. FT-IR spectra identified functional groups of metabolites that could act as reducing, capping, and stabilizing agents to the CuO-NPs. The insecticidal activity of CuO-NPs against wheat grain insects Sitophilus granarius and Rhyzopertha dominica was dose- and time-dependent. The mortality percentages due to NP treatment were 55–94.4% (S. granarius) and 70–90% (R. dominica). A botanical experiment was done in a randomized block design. Low CuO-NP concentration (50 ppm) caused significant increases in growth characteristics (shoot and root length, fresh and dry weight of shoot and root, and leaves number), photosynthetic pigments (total chlorophylls and carotenoids), and antioxidant enzymes of wheat plants. There was no significant change in carbohydrate or protein content. The use of CuO-NPs is a promising tool to control grain insects and enhance wheat growth performance.

Modifying the optical properties of rare earth doped phosphate glasses in a tunable fashion via the embedment of magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) is challenging for magneto-optic devices. Glasses with compositions (69-x)P2O5-30ZnO-1Er2O3-(x)Fe3O4, where x = 0 to 1.5 mol% are prepared by conventional melt quenching method. The Fe3O4NPs concentration dependent density, molar volume, refractive index and optical properties are determined. Density and molar volume shows strong correlation with structural alteration in the presence of NPs. The XRD spectra confirm the disordered nature of the glass and TEM micrograph display the presence of spherical NPs with average size ~26 nm. The optical band gap and Urbach energy calculated from the room temperature absorption spectra recorded in the range of 350-1700 nm reveal significant improvement. The density and refractive index increases and the molar volume decreases with the increase of Fe3O4contents. The energy band gap for direct and indirect transitions varies in the range of 4.47-3.64 eV and 4.27-3.53 eV, respectively. The Urbach energy increases from 0.15 to 0.19 eV as the NPs concentration increases from 0 to 1.5 mol%.

High refractive index composites of iron sulfides and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) have been prepared by co-precipitation from aqueous solution. Several reaction parameters were varied: inorganic reactants, reactant ratios, reaction temperatures, and reaction times. Selected samples were characterized with organic microelemental analysis, x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, DSC, and TEM. The nanocomposites with the highest refractive indices have been prepared using PEO, Mohr's salt, and H2S or NaHS. The analyses indicate that the iron sulfides in these materials consist of finely dispersed mackinawite and greigite (“amorphous” FeS) and, partially, also pyrite. The refractive indexes of the resulting composites are clearly above 2 at 632.8 and 1295 nm and can assume values between 2.5 and 2.8.

The development of green technology is creating great interest for researchers towards low-cost and environmentally friendly methods for the synthesis of nanoparticles. Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) attracted many researchers due to their electric, catalytic, optical, textile, photonic, monofluid, and pharmacological activities that depend on the shape and size of the nanoparticles. This investigation aims copper oxide nanoparticles synthesis using Aerva javanica plant leaf extract. Characterization of copper oxide nanoparticles synthesized by green route was performed by three different techniques: X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals the crystalline morphology of CuO-NPs and the average crystal size obtained is 15 nm. SEM images showed the spherical nature of the particles and size is lying in the 15–23 nm range. FTIR analysis confirms the functional groups of active components present in the extract which are responsible for reducing and capping agents for the synthesis of CuO-NPs. The synthesized CuO-NPs were studied for their antimicrobial potential against different bacterial as well as fungal pathogens. The results indicated that CuO-NPs show maximum antimicrobial activities against all the selected bacterial and fungal pathogens. Antimicrobial activities of copper oxide nanoparticles were compared with standard drugs Norfloxacin and amphotericin B antibiotics. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of copper oxide nanoparticles were 128 μg/mL against all selected bacterial pathogens. MIC of fungus and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of CuO-NPs were 160 μg/mL. Thus, CuO-NPs can be utilized as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent. The cytotoxic activity of the synthesized CuO-NPs suggested that toxicity was negligible at concentrations below 60 μg/mL.

Modifying the physical and optical properties of zinc borotellurite glasses by controlling rare earth (RE) doping is important in order to obtain high quality glass. In this study, Samarium (Sm3+) doped zinc borotellurite glasses were successfully fabricated by using conventional melt-quenching technique with chemical composition (where x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 mol%). The physical properties by mean of their density as well as molar volume were measured while the optical properties have been studied through UV-Vis spectroscopy in order to determine the optical band gap (Eopt) and Urbach energy (ΔΕ) of the glass system. Optical absorption spectra of the glass samples were recorded in the range 350 nm - 750 nm at room temperature. The amorphous nature of the glass was confirmed from X-ray diffraction techniques. The density and molar volume of the glass samples were found to vary with respect to Sm3+ ions content. The value of optical band gap, Eopt lies between 2.605 eV to 2.982 eV for the direct transition and 2.768 eV to 3.198 eV for the indirect transition respectively. Meanwhile, the Urbach energy, ΔE was observed in the range of 0.112 eV to 0.694 eV respectively. The physical and optical properties were found to be strongly affected by the varying concentration of Sm3+ ions. Some other results will be analysed and discussed in detail.

This research is based on the creation of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) hydrogel through in situ method. The effective UV-Vis spectroscopy absorption peak of 610 nm indicates the existence of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NP) group because of surface Plasmon resonance (SPR). Characterization of CuO-NPs was carried out by SEM, TEM, EDX, and XRD. However, the action of prepared nanocomposite hydrogels swelling was examined at different pH and saline solutions. In addition, CuO-NPs were also tested using the disk plate diffusion method by means of adverse effect of bacteria Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis) as well as Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli). The CuO-NPs hydrogels isolated from lab-made CMC (made from sugarcane bagasse) indicates that the Bacillus subtilis as well as Escherichia coli have greater antibacterial activity compared with synthetic CMC purchase from the market. CuO-NPs can be used effectively in biomedical applications with the production of hydrogels.
