We consider first-passage percolation in an infinite horizontal strip of finite height. Using methods from the theory of Markov chains, we prove a central limit theorem for first-passage times, and compute the time constants for some special cases.

The article presents the results of a set of hygrothermal experiments of an external wall insulated with an ETICS. As an add-on to previous studies, thermal insulation in the form of polystyrene with an additional horizontal strip of mineral wool was used. Laboratory tests were carried out in accordance with ETAG 004. The ETICS test rig was composed of combustible expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) and horizontal strips of noncombustible mineral wool (MW) fire barriers over windows. The physical and mechanical properties of four types of finishing renders (without an additional reinforcement mesh in base coat of the fire barriers) were analyzed across full hygrothermal cycles in a climate chamber. Temperature sensors were mounted onto different ETICS layers to collect thermal data during the weathering. The testing of ETICS regarding their hygrothermal performance revealed that there were no visible defects on any renderings and over the junctions depending on the type of used insulation materials. Results also showed that the joints of EPS and MW have approximately half of their bond strength from polystyrene strength.

In this work we study numerically the three-dimensional turbulent natural convection in a partially heated cubic cavity filled with water containing metallic nanoparticles, metallic oxides and others based on carbon. The objective is to study and compare the effect of the addition of nanoparticles studied in water and also the effect of the position of the heated partition on the heat exchange by turbulent natural convection in this type of geometry, which can significantly improve the design of heat exchange systems for better space optimization. For this we have treated numerically for different volume fractions the turbulent natural convection in the two cases where the cavity is heated respectively by a vertical and horizontal strip in the middle of one of the vertical walls. To take into account the effects of turbulence, we used the standard turbulence model ? - ?. The governing equations are discretized by the finite volume method using the power law scheme which offers a good stability characteristic in this type of flow. The results are presented in the form of isothermal lines and current lines. The variation of the mean Nusselt number is calculated for the two positions of the heated partition as a function of the volume fraction of the nanoparticles studied in water for different Rayleigh numbers. The results show that carbon-based nanoparticles intensify heat exchange by convection better and that the position of the heated partition significantly influences heat exchange by natural convection. In fact, an improvement in the average Nusselt number of more than 20% is observed for the case where the heated partition is horizontal.

AbstractExtracellular recordings from single neurons have been made from presumed area 21a of the cerebral cortex of the cat, anesthetized with N2O/O2/sodium pentobarbitone mixture. Area 21a contains mainly a representation of a central horizontal strip of contralateral visual field about 5 deg above and below the horizontal meridian.Excitatory discharge fields of area 21a neurons were substantially (or slightly but significantly) larger than those of neurons at corresponding eccentricities in areas 17, 19, or 18, respectively. About 95% of area 21a neurons could be activated through either eye and the input from the ipsilateral eye was commonly dominant. Over 90% and less than 10% of neurons had, respectively, C-type and S-type receptive-field organization. Virtually all neurons were orientation-selective and the mean width at half-height of the orientation tuning curves at 52.9 deg was not significantly different from that of neurons in areas 17 and 18. About 30% of area 21a neurons had preferred orientations within 15 deg of the vertical. The mean direction-selectivity index (32.8%) of area 21a neurons was substantially lower than the indices for neurons in areas 17 or 18. Only a few neurons exhibited moderately strong end-zone inhibition. Area 21a neurons responded poorly to fast-moving stimuli and the mean preferred velocity at about 12.5 deg/s was not significantly different from that for area 17 neurons.Selective pressure block of Y fibers in contralateral optic nerve resulted in a small but significant reduction in the preferred velocities of neurons activated via the Y-blocked eye. By contrast, removal of the Y input did not produce significant changes in the spatial organization of receptive fields (S or C type), the size of the discharge fields, the width of orientation tuning curves, or direction-selectivity indices. Our results are consistent with the idea that area 21a receives its principal excitatory input from area 17 and is involved mainly in form rather than motion analysis.

AbstractUsing the combinatorics of $\alpha$-unimodal sets, we establish two new results in the theory of quasisymmetric functions. First, we obtain the expansion of the fundamental basis into quasisymmetric power sums. Secondly, we prove that generating functions of reverse $P$-partitions expand positively into quasisymmetric power sums. Consequently, any nonnegative linear combination of such functions is $p$-positive whenever it is symmetric. As an application, we derive positivity results for chromatic quasisymmetric functions, unicellular and vertical strip LLT polynomials, multivariate Tutte polynomials, and the more general $B$-polynomials, matroid quasisymmetric functions, and certain Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, thus reproving and improving on numerous results in the literature.
