This study aimed to apply a diagnostic instrument that allowed determining the degree of academic literacy achieved by students in relation to their level of studies (undergraduate or graduate). That is, students’ knowledge, abilities, skills, beliefs and / or prejudices regarding the writing process were analyzed. The methodology describes the process of elaborating a diagnostic instrument for the evaluation of students’ writing skills who visit the Writing Center of the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo with the purpose of getting help on their written products. The results obtained were analyzed from a qualitative perspective, with a correlation between the main characteristics that the students consider are important in the task of writing. The results found that students work (i) to develop those areas that allow a text to be coherent, (ii) to have a good command of spelling; and (iii) to learn how to start writing. The diagnostic test made it possible to establish the parameters which define the characteristics that users must meet in the writing process to consider that they develop this activity well, and that they have reached a level of sufficiency in academic literacy that allows them to get by in the university environment.

This article outlines approaches on how to support writing skills and text competence when teaching German as a foreign language. The main question is whether and how dealing in detail with one’s own mistakes and actively analysing one’s own writing process can contribute to improving writing skills in teaching German as a foreign language. Reflections which were written down during the 2013/14 winter and 2016 summer semester at the University of Graz by students studying German as a foreign language, level C1, serve as basis for this article. These reflections refer to texts gathered within one semester respectively. They address subjects relevant to the daily life of a translator in training, such as economics, law, culture, medicine and technology. During this period of reflection, students addressed the question of whether their approach to writing texts has changed in the course of one semester. In addition, they were asked to focus on which mistakes were made repeatedly and to which error category they belonged. Furthermore, they examined the areas in which they feel that they have personally improved and see their strengths. This article aims to demonstrate to what extent this teaching approach succeeded.

This article aims to discuss the respect for the need for didactic and pedagogical strategies in relation to academic teaching, in the understanding of university students, as subjects of language, with values and identity marks. A proposal of this research is theoretically theoretical or academic literacy, as well as launching some perspectives, from the possibilities of appropriation practices in the university environment by academics. The study aims to collaborate with the construction of knowledge that interferes and will (re) mean the process of academic literacy, through reflections, for students who are builders of their only speeches and not only reproducers of legitimate speeches. Methodologically, a research carried out in bibliographic and descriptive studies, with a qualitative approach. Therefore, an epistemological analysis based on Foucault (1996), Orlandi (1988) and Rodrigues (2009) for the notion of discourse; Soares (2009) for teaching and Lea and Street (2014) for academic teaching.

Although Canada globally ranks among the top ten countries for per capita Internet use (ITU, 2001; Statistics Canada, 2002), roughly one half of the population is till not online. The Canadian government has supported numerous initiatives aimed at bridging the 'digital divide' between technological haves and have-nots, recognizing, at the same time, that simple physical access to information. . .

This paper presents the results of a study that demonstrates an effective use of the Web as a tool to increase motivation and thus promote reading and writing skills in Spanish as well as a deeper sense of the culture of the Spanish speaking world. In the study, thirty students of second year Spanish at the University of New South Wales were required to prepare an itinerary for a trip to a Spanish speaking country of their choice using the WWW as the only resource. In general our findings regarding improved language skills were consistent with the literature: an increase of vocabulary, more use of references, more student initiated interactions and greater interactivity in the classroom amongst students were observed. There was, however, one aspect, linguistic accuracy, in which improvement was not greatly noted. The data collected confirms that a task-oriented Web based course can increase the motivation of students, improve the scope of their reading, and enhance their perception of the target culture, all with a great effect on range of language explored, learned and re-processed, but a much lesser effect on the accuracy of written language produced.

A short account is presented on the early history, the intentions and the development of large scale parallel computing at the University of Wuppertal. It might serve as an illustration how common activities between computational and computer science can be stimulated, in the university environment.
