Self-healing ceramics have been researched at high temperatures, but few have been considered at lower temperatures. In this study, SiC-Al2O3-B4C ceramic composite was compacted by spark plasma sintering (SPS). A Vickers indentation was introduced, and the cracks were healed between 600 °C and 800 °C in air. Cracks could be healed completely in air above 700 °C. The ceramic composite had the best healing performance at 700 °C for 30 min, recovering flexural strength of up to 94.2% of the original. Good crack-healing ability would make this composite highly useful as it could heal defects and flaws autonomously in practical applications. The healing mechanism was also proposed to be the result of the oxidation of B4C.

AbstractIn this work, pitch-based carbon fibers were utilized to reinforce silicon carbide (SiC) composites via reaction melting infiltration (RMI) method by controlling the reaction temperature and resin carbon content. Thermal conductivities and bending strengths of composites obtained under different preparation conditions were characterized by various analytical methods. Results showed the formation of SiC whiskers (SiCw) during RMI process according to vapor—solid (VS) mechanism. SiCw played an important role in toughening the Cpf/SiC composites due to crack bridging, crack deflection, and SiCw pull-out. Increase in reaction temperature during RMI process led to an initial increase in thermal conductivity along in-plane and thickness directions of composites, followed by a decline. At reaction temperature of 1600 °C, thermal conductivities along the in-plane and thickness directions were estimated to be 203.00 and 39.59 W/(m·K), respectively. Under these conditions, bending strength was recorded as 186.15±3.95 MPa. Increase in resin carbon content before RMI process led to the generation of more SiC matrix. Thermal conductivities along in-plane and thickness directions remained stable with desirable values of 175.79 and 38.86 W/(m·K), respectively. By comparison, optimal bending strength improved to 244.62±3.07 MPa. In sum, these findings look promising for future application of pitch-based carbon fibers for reinforcement of SiC ceramic composites.

This study provides a novel method to prepare metal-ceramic composites from magnetically selected iron ore using microwave heating. By introducing three different microwave susceptors (Activated Carbon, SiC, and a mixture of Activated Carbon and SiC) during the microwave process, effective control of the ratio of metallic and ceramic phases has been achieved easily. The effects of the three susceptors on the microstructure of the metal-ceramics and the related reaction mechanisms were also investigated in detail. The results show that the metal phase (Fe) and ceramic phase (Fe2SiO4, FeAl2O4) can be maintained, but the metal phase to ceramic phase changed significantly. In particular, the microstructures appeared as well-distributed nanosheet structures with diameters of ~400 nm and thicknesses of ~20 nm when SiC was used as the microwave susceptor.

Modeling the self-sustained high-temperature synthesis (SHS) reaction via thermal dilution and transformation of the reaction heterogeneous media into a moderate exothermic one has unlimited potential for designing inorganic powders of a certain morphology beneficial for advanced consolidation. Thermal/inert dilution of the high-exothermic mixtures leads to the fluent decrease of both the combustion temperature and velocity, thus allowing to tailor the thermal regime of the combustion process, therewith contributing to high yield of reaction and governing the microstructural features of the combustion products. In the current review, we shed on light on the possibilities of this effective strategy to control the thermal behavior of the SHS process for the preparation of applicable powder precursors for the subsequent successful sintering. Since the SHS process of some refractory ceramics (MoSi2, TiB2, TiC, etc.) involves a relatively violent reaction rate and high combustion temperature, achieving a high level of microstructure control in these systems is often challenging. The challenge was tackled with a thermal dilution approach, attaining considerable enhancement in the homogeneity among phases with an increase of diluent content along with microstructure refinement.
