Abstract Random number generation has become an indispensable part of information processing: it is essential for many numerical algorithms, security applications, and in securing fairness in everyday life. Random number generators (RNG) find application in many devices, ranging from dice and roulette wheels, via computer algorithms, lasers to quantum systems, which inevitably capitalize on their physical dynamics at respective spatio-temporal scales. Herein, to the best of our knowledge, we propose the first mathematically proven true RNG (TRNG) based on a mechanical system, particularly the triple linkage of Thurston and Weeks. By using certain parameters, its free motion has been proven to be an Anosov flow, from which we can show that it has an exponential mixing property and structural stability. We contend that this mechanical Anosov flow can be used as a TRNG, which requires that the random number should be unpredictable, irreproducible, robust against the inevitable noise seen in physical implementations, and the resulting distribution's controllability (an important consideration in practice). We investigate the proposed system's properties both theoretically and numerically based on the above four perspectives. Further, we confirm that the random bits numerically generated pass the standard statistical tests for random bits.

AbstractIn this paper, we introduce the notion of taut contact hyperbola on three-manifolds. It is the hyperbolic analogue of the taut contact circle notion introduced by Geiges and Gonzalo (Invent. Math., 121: 147–209, 1995), (J. Differ. Geom., 46: 236–286, 1997). Then, we characterize and study this notion, exhibiting several examples, and emphasizing differences and analogies between taut contact hyperbolas and taut contact circles. Moreover, we show that taut contact hyperbolas are related to some classic notions existing in the literature. In particular, it is related to the notion of conformally Anosov flow, to the critical point condition for the Chern–Hamilton energy functional and to the generalized Finsler structures introduced by R. Bryant. Moreover, taut contact hyperbolas are related to the bi-contact metric structures introduced in D. Perrone (Ann. Global Anal. Geom., 52: 213–235, 2017).

Abstract Consider a three-dimensional partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism. It is proved that under some rigid hypothesis on the tangent bundle dynamics, the map is (modulo finite covers and iterates) an Anosov diffeomorphism, a (generalized) skew-product or the time-one map of an Anosov flow, thus recovering a well-known classification conjecture of the second author to this restricted setting.

We present a new paradigm for three-dimensional chaos, and specifically for the Lorenz equations. The main difficulty in these equations and for a generic flow in dimension 3 is the existence of singularities. We show how to use knot theory as a way to remove the singularities. Specifically, we claim: (i) for certain parameters, the Lorenz system has an invariant one-dimensional curve, which is a trefoil knot. The knot is a union of invariant manifolds of the singular points. (ii) The flow is topologically equivalent to an Anosov flow on the complement of this curve, and moreover to a geodesic flow. (iii) When varying the parameters, the system exhibits topological phase transitions, i.e. for special parameter values, it will be topologically equivalent to an Anosov flow on a knot complement. Different knots appear for different parameter values and each knot controls the dynamics at nearby parameters.

In this work we completely classify $C^{\infty }$ conjugacy for smooth conservative (pointwise) partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms homotopic to a linear Anosov automorphism on the 3-torus by its center foliation behavior. We prove that the uniform version of absolute continuity for the center foliation is the natural hypothesis to obtain $C^{\infty }$ conjugacy to its linear Anosov automorphism. Avila, Viana and Wilkinson [Absolute continuity, Lyapunov exponents and rigidity I: Geodesic flows. J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS)17(6) (2015), 1435–1462] proved that for a perturbation in the volume preserving case of the time-one map of an Anosov flow absolute continuity of the center foliation implies smooth rigidity. The absolute version of absolute continuity is the appropriate scenario for our context since it is not possible to obtain a result analogous to that of Avila, Viana and Wilkinson for our class of maps, for absolute continuity alone fails miserably to imply smooth rigidity for our class of maps. Our theorem is a global rigidity result as we do not assume the diffeomorphism to be at some distance from the linear Anosov automorphism. We also do not assume ergodicity. In particular, a metric condition on the center foliation implies ergodicity and $C^{\infty }$ center foliation.

We investigate certain natural connections between sub-Riemannian geometry and hyperbolic dynamical systems. In particular, we study dynamically defined horizontal distributions which split into two integrable ones and ask: how is the energy of a sub-Riemannian geodesic shared between its projections onto the integrable summands? We show that if the horizontal distribution is the sum of the strong stable and strong unstable distributions of a special type of a contact Anosov flow in three dimensions, then for any short enough sub-Riemannian geodesic connecting points on the same orbit of the Anosov flow, the energy of the geodesic is shared equally between its projections onto the stable and unstable bundles. The proof relies on a connection between the geodesic equations and the harmonic oscillator equation, and its explicit solution by the Jacobi elliptic functions. Using a different idea, we prove an analogous result in higher dimensions for the geodesic flow of a closed Riemannian manifold of constant negative curvature.

We provide a new criterion for the existence of a global cross section to a volume-preserving Anosov flow. The criterion is expressed in terms of expansion and contraction rates of the flow and generalizes known results of this type.

In this article we analyze totally periodic pseudo-Anosov flows in graph 3-manifolds. This means that in each Seifert fibered piece of the torus decomposition, the free homotopy class of regular fibers has a finite power which is also a finite power of the free homotopy class of a closed orbit of the flow. We show that each such flow is topologically equivalent to one of the model pseudo-Anosov flows which we previously constructed in Barbot and Fenley (Pseudo-Anosov flows in toroidal manifolds.Geom. Topol. 17(2013), 1877–1954). A model pseudo-Anosov flow is obtained by glueing standard neighborhoods of Birkhoff annuli and perhaps doing Dehn surgery on certain orbits. We also show that two model flows on the same graph manifold are isotopically equivalent (i.e. there is a isotopy of$M$mapping the oriented orbits of the first flow to the oriented orbits of the second flow) if and only if they have the same topological and dynamical data in the collection of standard neighborhoods of the Birkhoff annuli.

In this paper we prove the following rigidity result: let ${\it\varphi}$ be a $C^{\infty }$ topologically mixing transversely symplectic Anosov flow. If (i) its weak stable and weak unstable distributions are $C^{\infty }$ and (ii) its Hamenstädt metrics are sub-Riemannian, then up to finite covers and a constant change of time scale, ${\it\varphi}$ is $C^{\infty }$ flow conjugate to the geodesic flow of a closed locally symmetric Riemannian space of rank one.
