“Shocked at my Levity”

Ezra Pound’s humor promotes unorthodox intimacies between readers and writers. His portraits in The Pisan Cantos catch Henry James and James Joyce laughing, emphasizing their human peculiarities and Pound’s personal knowledge of them. These scenes suggest how unsatisfactory he finds traditional notions of poetic immortality. Instead, his portraits of jesting writers make literary texts contain the artist as both heroic figure and human individual, doing the work of high art and personal interaction simultaneously. Pound loves the Romantic figure of the poet-hero, but his laughter emphasizes that artist’s fallible humanity, and highlights modernism’s concern with creating accurate models of imaginative sympathy. As Pound’s laughter becomes more intimate, however, it is also more troubling: humor in The Cantos seeks to enlist his reader not just in his poem but in his hierarchical vision of art and his fascist politics.

“Cantos” by Ezra Pound in Russian

The paper provides a review of the complete translation of one of the key works in the history of world literature, the poem “Cantos” by Ezra Pound, published for the first time in Russian. The translation was done by Andrey Bronnikov, who also prepared a commentary on it and wrote an introductory article. The review shows that Pound's epic is a synthesis of all possible forms of epic — archaic, heroic and lyrical, it is a poem that tells about the eternal confrontation between the beautiful and the high, personified by historical and mythological heroes of different eras in the history of world culture, and the vulgar and ugly, personified a faceless symbol called Uzura (Consumer) by the poet. The key characteristic, thanks to which the poem can be attributed to the genre of the epic, is, in addition to the plot associated with the problem of the eternal originality of this opposition, also the language, filled with facts, quotes and clichés, edited by the epic poet in the same style. A Comparative Study of Ezra Pound's Cantos on the domain of symbolism and W. B. Yeats's occultism through A Vision

The Cantos by Ezra Pound serves in a quintessential way to focus on the Modernist idea of literature. By defining the Modernist movement, it is emphasized in what aspects this movement penetrates the monumental poem, The Cantos. Alongside showing a sequence as to how modernism was formed and developed in time, the research provides a deeper understanding through Ezra Pound’s modernist perception and W. B. Yeats’s occultism over his work of art, A Vision. Pound’s epic poem, The Cantos and Yeats’s unique work, A Vision fulfill the need of a literary satiation in The Modernist period. By juxtaposing The Cantos and Yeats’s occultist perspective, the research probes the extent that the two works create a literary escapism, which attempts to balance the sanctity of human sanity. In the Modernist period, the period of picturing the frustration of the First World War, the interrelation of these works of art turns out a reflection of a literary recuperation from the cataclysm led by The Modernist world.

Canakinumab for secondary prevention of coronary artery disease

Cardiovascular disease manifestations (CVD) are the world's leading cause of death, and their impact on morbidity requires effective prevention strategies of recurrent adverse events. For decades, inflammation has been proposed as a key promoter for atherosclerosis and its complications. However, studies on the use of drugs to target the excess inflammation in CVD are limited. In 2017, the Canakinumab Anti-inflammatory Thrombosis Outcome Study (CANTOS) trial confirmed the key role of inflammation on atherosclerotic disease. Canakinumab is a monoclonal antibody that blocks an inflammatory pathway mediated by IL-1β. The results of the CANTOS trial opened a new era of investigating new therapeutics targeting inflammation for CVD secondary prevention. This review presents the canakinumab's pharmacology, current clinical development status and regulatory perspectives.

The Epic Mania: Pound’s Response to E. A. Poe and T. Hulme

The article is devoted to the analysis of a specific component in the post-epic artistic picture of the world contextualized in the genre experiments with epic forms that symbolize the search for new ways to express the substantial unity of the individual with a society. It is important that in «The Poetic Principle» (1850) Poe appeals to the epic tradition and expresses an essential thesis about the paradigm of the epic and the lyrical in precedent texts and mentions a significant lyrical inderpinning in Homer's Iliad. In «A Lecture on Modern Poetry» (1908), Hume posits that the very assumption that in modern poetry there will appear an artist capable of synthesizing all the experience of modern peroson in the form of a great epic is an utter misunderstanding of the tendencies in modern poetry. Both Pound and Yuri Klen consider the creation of a modern epic in the coordinates of the continuum of the national poetic canon. The concept of «return» constitutes an omnipresent aesthetic program of the Pound’s epic. The poetics of repetitions in the Cantos is based on the versification models of the European fixed poetic forms that are extensively represented against the background of new emphases and reformatting of the ancient epic forms, making new their conventions and motives. Creative and receptive aspects of the innovative application of specific features in the epic composition (recurrent historical plots, the νόστος topos) deeply correlate with the artistic form of the modern epic.

Anti-inflammatory and Immunomodulatory Therapies in Atherosclerosis

Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor in atherosclerosis development and lipid-lowering drugs (i.e., statins) remain the treatment of choice. Despite effective reduction of LDL cholesterol in patients, a residual cardiovascular risk persists in some individuals, highlighting the need for further therapeutic intervention. Recently, the CANTOS trial paved the way toward the development of specific therapies targeting inflammation, a key feature in atherosclerosis progression. The pre-existence of multiple drugs modulating both innate and adaptive immune responses has significantly accelerated the number of translational studies applying these drugs to atherosclerosis. Additional preclinical research has led to the discovery of new therapeutic targets, offering promising perspectives for the treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis. Currently, both drugs with selective targeting and broad unspecific anti-inflammatory effects have been tested. In this chapter, we aim to give an overview of current advances in immunomodulatory treatment approaches for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases.
