Background. Halfway houses (HwH) may support community reintegration of mental health care users and can be effective in meeting occupational needs of residents. However, they are not optimally used in South Africa. Purpose. This study aimed to improve the functioning of a HwH so that it better meets occupational needs of the resident mental health care users. It draws on Doble & Santha; ( 2008 ) seven occupational needs. Method. A four-phase Participatory Action Research methodology was used. We conducted thematic analysis to describe met and unmet needs within PAR phases. Findings. Occupational needs of accomplishment, renewal, pleasure and companionship were being met. However, coherence, agency and affirmation needs were not being met. An additional occupational need for interdependence, based on the African ethic of Ubuntu, was identified. Implications. HwH functioning affected residents’ experiences of health and wellbeing. Engagement in collective occupations can contribute to meeting the occupational need of interdependence.

The pursuit of culturally responsive approaches for designing and evaluating programs to promote social justice has become of the utmost importance to the evaluation community in the past decade. A strengths-focused evaluation approach has great promise for empowering individuals, groups, communities, and organizations, and identifying program strengths to build upon in addition to illuminating program deficits. However, there is a dearth of literature on using a strengths approach to evaluate interventions and programs to promote social justice. Drawing from the two disciplines of positive psychology and evaluation, this article illustrates a strengths-focused approach to formative evaluation using a case example of a halfway house for previously incarcerated women. The findings exemplify the positive psychological phenomena that emerge as a result of focusing the evaluation on program strengths. The case demonstrates that the application of a strengths-focused approach to evaluating social justice interventions can be empowering for institutions and the communities they serve.

Purpose A common challenge found in the establishment and operation of a halfway house is the local community’s opposition, which can lead to community disengagement and the exclusion of the halfway house residents from the locality. This study aims to examine, and present a unique, alternate experience of the Kalatapae halfway house, which is located in a less privileged community in the southern part of Thailand. Design/methodology/approach The study uses mixed methods by using a qualitative methodology through conducting in-depth interviews with 16 halfway house residents and the house’s manager, and a focus group with government officials and adopting a quantitative methodology through conducting public surveys with the local residents in Kalatapae and its 6 other surrounding communities to inquire about their support for the halfway house and its residents. Findings The study found certain key factors that help secure emotional support for the halfway house residents through the local community’s acceptance. These are needs recognition of the house residents, community involvement and the perceived mutual benefits gained by the community from the operation of the halfway house. The community’s positive social engagement arguably increases the ability of the halfway house residents to desist from crime and better facilitate their transition back into society. Research limitations/implications The quantitative data were analyzed based on the frequency of responses to quantify the overall level of support of the local residents. Individual factors that would have an effect on the responses were not determined. Practical implications The experience can serve as a strategy for operating other halfway houses to facilitate transition and reintegration of the house’s residents into the society. Originality/value The study provides a practical aspect in the implementation of an aftercare program by presenting new key elements for a halfway house to secure local community acceptance and maintain a positive relationship with the halfway house's residents.

The condition of a child who does not have parents or a guide in life will be difficult to develop and grow well. It takes the right place for children to study together regardless of race, economy, and other problems. A place that becomes a home for children to learn and play together with the right people and understand very well about children's problems. Even parents always hope that their children can grow up to be children who have good and healthy personalities. But of course parents themselves are not perfect creatures who can teach it all. Because humans have their own skills and talents. Respectively Even having parents, there is no guarantee that parents really understand the child's condition. Very often parents do not understand or even pay less attention which of course affects the child's growth and development. Because humans naturally need other people to be role models or examples in their life. One solution that can address this problem is by designing a halfway house for street children that has appropriate facilities for child development, is environmentally friendly, and is located close to where street children are. Street children generally earn money on streets close to public transportation locations. some street children have been handled by an orphanage. However, the facilities and the number of orphanages are not proportional to the number of street children. So that not all street children can be handled properly. Designs are made not only for theoretical learning but also for developing other types of children's intelligence. The process of form and space is made according to the needs that will be needed by children in terms of health, hobby distribution, social interaction, and education. So that children can feel learning is not just a theory but can also be channeled into other forms of activity. Keywords: develop and grow well; house for street children; personalitites AbstrakKondisi anak yang tidak memiliki orangtua maupun penuntun dalam hidupnya akan sulit untuk berkembang dan tumbuh dengan baik.

The occurrence of the aging population phenomenon in the future between 2030-2050 will result in the domination of the elderly population in the world, which is caused by the phenomenon of baby boomers that occurred in the 1960-70s where birth rates and dependence rates were very high. Elderly is the peak of the last cycle in human life so that the aging process will occur which is marked by a decrease in physical and psychological functions. This decline can be overcome by meeting the needs of the elderly such as the ability to be mobile, community and the most important thing is health. The development of times and the flow of globalization require people to be able to survive in all conditions. However, the busyness of their children at work is often the impact of the physical and psychological conditions of the elderly, which in the process of aging require more attention. In Indonesia, there are already many nursing homes where the elderly live. However, the social structure in Indonesia is not used to the trend of elderly people living separately from their families and homes. Therefore, the project of the Halfway House for the Elderly in Bogor can become a new place that can accommodate the needs of the elderly to get attention to their aging condition without having to leave their home and family. The Halfway House provides rooms that can be occupied periodically after attending seminars and therapy activities. Facilities such as entertainment, fitness, animal therapy, environmental therapy are available to apply the concept through the retreat, recharge and reborn stages so that they can become productive and be active for the elderly community.

The study aims to investigate the rates of recidivism among prisoners on parole with a substance misuse disorder who participated in the Jerusalem halfway-house, which combines supervision, employment, and a comprehensive therapeutic program. The study population included all participants who have been treated in the halfway-house ( N = 125), whereas the comparison group included all prisoners with a substance misuse disorder who were released after serving their full sentences ( N = 321). To reduce possible selection biases, the Propensity Score Matching method was used. Findings show that prisoners, who were treated at the Jerusalem halfway-house, are characterized by higher and frequent rates of recidivism. However, when only completers of the halfway-house were evaluated, it was found that they had lower and slower rates of recidivism. Findings suggest that completing treatment contributes to desistance from crime in the critical post-release years among participants and indicates the importance of optimal diagnostic processes before admitting prisoners to a halfway-house.
