It is noted that in modern aircraft composite structures there is a significant number of composite and metal-composite shear bolted joints, the fatigue life of which is an important factor to ensure the operating safety of such constructions. Thus, special attention is given to the evaluation of the layered composites fatigue life in such joints during tests and calculations of the similar structures components. Despite a considerable number of publications and studies on this subject, it can be observed that many important methodological issues have not been solved yet in this field. These problems can deal with the choice of the main mode of layered composites fatigue damage in shear bolted joints; the uncertainty of the basic fatigue curve; the practical absence of some models, representing diagrams of constant life fatigue for the layered composites in the joints under consideration; the uncertainty of fatigue damage summation rule in the layered composites in the investigated joints. Based on the review results and the data analysis of domestic and foreign publications including the results of specially conducted studies, the solutions to these problems are proposed. The proposed solutions were verified by analyzing the calculated and experimental data on the fatigue life of carbon fiber reinforced plastic laminates НТА7/6376 [45/-45/0/90]3S in the double-shear bolted joints specimens.

The aim of the present work is to compare the interlaminar shear strength and fracture toughness of glued carbon fiber rods obtained using different experimental approaches and provide the effective way to characterise the interlaminar properties for reliable simulation of the delamination. Five different test methods (tension, single shear test, and double shear test, mode I and mode II delamination tests) were performed. Using the explicit LS-DYNA code the finite element model capable of simulating the damage process of bonded connection was developed. The interlaminar connection and delamination criteria were calibrated using the parameter identification methodology implemented in LS-OPT optimization tool.

Abstract This paper considers the canonical problem of a thin shear layer evolution at Reynolds number Re = 400000 using the novel Compact Accurately Boundary Adjusting high-Resolution Technique (CABARET). The study is focused on the effect of the specific mesh refinement in the high shear rate areas on the flow properties under the influence of the developing instability. The original sequence of computational meshes (256^2, 512^2, 1024^2, 2048^2 cells) is modified using an iterative refinement algorithm based on the hyperbolic tangent. The properties of the solutions obtained are discussed in terms of the initial momentum thickness and the initial vorticity thickness, viscous and dilatational dissipation rates and also integral enstrophy. The growth rate for the most unstable mode depending on the mesh resolution is considered. In conclusion the accuracy of calculated mesh functions is estimated via L1, L2, L∞ norms.

This work presents the results of three connection types in double-shear with dowel fasteners, using the simplified equations from the Eurocode 5. All design parameters were established and compared using three different wood strength and density properties, which constitute the members connections. Eighty-one connections were obtained, allowing to conclude about the number of fasteners needed to the applied tensile load. An increase in the number of dowels was obtained with the increased applied tensile load, lower dowel diameter, lower wood density, and lower strength material in all connection types in the study. The design characteristic load-carrying capacity per shear plane and fastener also decrease with the previously considered parameters.

This work consists of evaluating the tensile and compression static allowable stress of a hybrid (metal-composite) riveted joint. The analyzed joint is composed by two sheets of 2014 – T6 aluminium alloy and a T300/5208 Graphite/Epoxy quasi-isotropic laminate, which were joined by twelve Lockbolt Swaged Collar rivets titanium alloy Ti–6Al–4V annealed. The joint was analyzed through a computational model developed using the Finite Element Method (FEM), with the fasteners modelled through the Multi - Springs technique. This method was widely used to simulate the mechanical behaviour metal-metal and composite-composite parts of the joint. It is validated comparing its results with analytical results of metallic joints available in the literature. Through this model, both the allowable load and its distribution in the fasteners of the joint were determined. Since the evaluated joint is subjected to double shear and, therefore, has no eccentricities, the presence of secondary bending was not observed, the bearing and bypass loads were the most relevant in evaluating the allowable loads of the joint. The load distribution in the joint and its components’ safety margin was determined, with the laminate being the limiting component of the allowable load.
