AbstractFungal decomposition of wood severely affects the soundness of timber constructions. The diagnosis of wood decay requires direct observations or sampling by skilled experts. Wood decay often occurs in obscure spaces, including the enclosed inner spaces of walls or under the floor. In this study, we examined the ability of machine olfaction to detect odors of fungi grown on common construction softwoods to provide a novel diagnostic method for wood construction soundness. The combination of a simple device equipped with semiconductor gas sensors (gas sensor array) and multivariate analysis discriminated a fungi-related odor from control odor without instrumental analysis (e.g., gas chromatography). This method is often referred to as machine olfaction or electronic nose. We measured the odor of wood test pieces that were infected with Fomitopsis palustris or Trametes versicolor and sound test pieces using a gas sensor array. The sensor responses of the specimens showed different patterns between the inoculated and control samples. Each specimen class formed independent groups in a principal component score plot, almost regardless of wood species, fungal species, or cultivation period. This method provides a new decay diagnosis method that is cost-effective and easy to operate.

Growth-transform (GT) neurons and their population models allow for independent control over the spiking statistics and the transient population dynamics while optimizing a physically plausible distributed energy functional involving continuous-valued neural variables. In this paper we describe a backpropagation-less learning approach to train a network of spiking GT neurons by enforcing sparsity constraints on the overall network spiking activity. The key features of the model and the proposed learning framework are: (a) spike responses are generated as a result of constraint violation and hence can be viewed as Lagrangian parameters; (b) the optimal parameters for a given task can be learned using neurally relevant local learning rules and in an online manner; (c) the network optimizes itself to encode the solution with as few spikes as possible (sparsity); (d) the network optimizes itself to operate at a solution with the maximum dynamic range and away from saturation; and (e) the framework is flexible enough to incorporate additional structural and connectivity constraints on the network. As a result, the proposed formulation is attractive for designing neuromorphic tinyML systems that are constrained in energy, resources, and network structure. In this paper, we show how the approach could be used for unsupervised and supervised learning such that minimizing a training error is equivalent to minimizing the overall spiking activity across the network. We then build on this framework to implement three different multi-layer spiking network architectures with progressively increasing flexibility in training and consequently, sparsity. We demonstrate the applicability of the proposed algorithm for resource-efficient learning using a publicly available machine olfaction dataset with unique challenges like sensor drift and a wide range of stimulus concentrations. In all of these case studies we show that a GT network trained using the proposed learning approach is able to minimize the network-level spiking activity while producing classification accuracy that are comparable to standard approaches on the same dataset.

AbstractMost mammals sniff to detect odors, but little is known how the periodic inhale and exhale that make up a sniff helps to improve odor detection. In this combined experimental and theoretical study, we use fluid mechanics and machine olfaction to rationalize the benefits of sniffing at different rates. We design and build a bellows and sensor system to detect the change in current as a function of odor concentration. A fast sniff enables quick odor recognition, but too fast a sniff makes the amplitude of the signal comparable to noise. A slow sniff increases signal amplitude but delays its transmission. This trade-off may inspire the design of future devices that can actively modulate their sniffing frequency according to different odors.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men in the developed world. A more sensitive and specific detection strategy for lethal prostate cancer beyond serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) population screening is urgently needed. Diagnosis by canine olfaction, using dogs trained to detect cancer by smell, has been shown to be both specific and sensitive. While dogs themselves are impractical as scalable diagnostic sensors, machine olfaction for cancer detection is testable. However, studies bridging the divide between clinical diagnostic techniques, artificial intelligence, and molecular analysis remains difficult due to the significant divide between these disciplines. We tested the clinical feasibility of a cross-disciplinary, integrative approach to early prostate cancer biosensing in urine using trained canine olfaction, volatile organic compound (VOC) analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) artificial neural network (ANN)-assisted examination, and microbial profiling in a double-blinded pilot study. Two dogs were trained to detect Gleason 9 prostate cancer in urine collected from biopsy-confirmed patients. Biopsy-negative controls were used to assess canine specificity as prostate cancer biodetectors. Urine samples were simultaneously analyzed for their VOC content in headspace via GC-MS and urinary microbiota content via 16S rDNA Illumina sequencing. In addition, the dogs’ diagnoses were used to train an ANN to detect significant peaks in the GC-MS data. The canine olfaction system was 71% sensitive and between 70–76% specific at detecting Gleason 9 prostate cancer. We have also confirmed VOC differences by GC-MS and microbiota differences by 16S rDNA sequencing between cancer positive and biopsy-negative controls. Furthermore, the trained ANN identified regions of interest in the GC-MS data, informed by the canine diagnoses. Methodology and feasibility are established to inform larger-scale studies using canine olfaction, urinary VOCs, and urinary microbiota profiling to develop machine olfaction diagnostic tools. Scalable multi-disciplinary tools may then be compared to PSA screening for earlier, non-invasive, more specific and sensitive detection of clinically aggressive prostate cancers in urine samples.

Deep learning methods have been widely applied to visual and acoustic technology. In this paper, we propose an odor labeling convolutional encoder–decoder (OLCE) for odor identification in machine olfaction. OLCE composes a convolutional neural network encoder and decoder where the encoder output is constrained to odor labels. An electronic nose was used for the data collection of gas responses followed by a normative experimental procedure. Several evaluation indexes were calculated to evaluate the algorithm effectiveness: accuracy 92.57%, precision 92.29%, recall rate 92.06%, F1-Score 91.96%, and Kappa coefficient 90.76%. We also compared the model with some algorithms used in machine olfaction. The comparison result demonstrated that OLCE had the best performance among these algorithms.

Practical applications of machine olfaction have been eagerly awaited. A free-hand measurement, in which a measurement device is manually exposed to sample odors, is expected to be a key technology to realize practical machine olfaction. To implement odor identification systems based on the free-hand measurement, the comprehensive development of a measurement system including hardware, measurement protocols, and data analysis is necessary. In this study, we developed palm-size wireless odor measurement devices equipped with Membrane-type Surface stress Sensors (MSS) and investigated the effect of measurement protocols and feature selection on odor identification. By using the device, we measured vapors of liquids as odor samples through the free-hand measurement in different protocols. From the measurement data obtained with these protocols, datasets of transfer function ratios (TFRs) were created and analyzed by clustering and machine learning classification. It has been revealed that TFRs in the low-frequency range below 1 Hz notably contributed to vapor identification because the frequency components in that range reflect the dynamics of the detection mechanism of MSS. We also showed the optimal measurement protocol for accurate classification. This study has shown a guideline of the free-hand measurement and will contribute to the practical implementation of machine olfaction in society.
