Abstract Nonlinear current-voltage (IV) characteristics of Bi-2212 observed in the presence of the nonmagnetic impurity have been explained incorporating the idea of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz - Thouless (BKT). An exponent (η) is extracted as a function of temperature (T) for several Bi2-xSr2 CaCu2-x ZnxO8+δ (Bi-2212) superconducting samples. Within the framework of the Ambegaokar-Halperin-Nelson-Siggia (AHNS) theory we have extracted the superfluid phase stiffness (SPS) as a function of T. A scaling between the SPS and critical temperature is observed. Strong suppression by the nonmagnetic impurity has been explained using the idea of localized phase fluctuations in the superconducting planes.

Abstract The dynamics of sound in a fluid is intrinsically nonlinear. We derive the consequences of this fact for the analogue gravitational field experienced by sound waves, by first describing generally how the nonlinearity of the equation for phase fluctuations back-reacts on the definition of the background providing the effective space-time metric. Subsequently, we use the analytical tool of Riemann invariants in one-dimensional motion to derive source terms of the effective gravitational field stemming from nonlinearity. Finally, we show that the consequences of nonlinearity we derive can be observed with Bose-Einstein condensates in the ultracold gas laboratory.

Abstract The principle of operation of the device for measuring frequency characteristics is considered. Block diagram of a device for measuring the frequency characteristics of a digital frequency comparator with correlation quadrature processing and description of their components is illustrated. The block diagram of the frequency multiplier is given. The accuracy characteristics of the developed meter design are evaluated. They are compared with the characteristics of previously used devices. The Improve accuracy characteristics and increased stability of operation were found.

Abstract Within the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory, superconductivity is entirely governed by the pairing energy scale, which gives rise to the superconducting energy gap, Δ. However, another important energy scale, the superfluid phase stiffness, J, which determines the resilience of the superconductor to phase-fluctuations is normally ignored. The spectacular success of BCS theory owes to the fact that in conventional superconductors J is normally several orders of magnitude larger than Δ and thus an irrelevant energy scale. However, in certain situations such as in the presence of low carrier density, strong disorder, at low-dimensions or in granular superconductors, J can drastically come down and even become smaller than Δ. In such situations, the temperature and magnetic field evolution of superconducting properties is governed by phase fluctuations, which gives rise to novel electronic states where signatures of electronic pairing continue to exist even when the zero resistance state is destroyed. In this article, we will review the recent experimental developments on the study of phase fluctuations in conventional superconductors.

Abstract Phase variations of the interrogation field lead to frequency shifts in Ramsey-type atomic clocks. This paper reports the development of a 300 MHz Mach–Zehnder (MZ) switch that effectively suppresses phase-transient effects. Similar to MZ interferometers, this radio-frequency (RF) MZ switch comprises two arms that are power- and phase-matched with each other. By inserting a PIN diode RF switch in one arm, the other arm remains undisturbed, freeing it of the phase transient. Trigger phase fluctuation measurements are implemented by using a lock-in amplifier to extract the in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) demodulation data. The results show that the extinction ratio of the RF MZ switch phase fluctuations is <5 μrad, which is significantly lower than that of a PIN (50 μrad). When applied to a cesium fountain clock, the RF MZ switch produces a frequency shift better than 1.73 × 10−16.

The necessity of studying the influence of the transformation of the frequency mismatch function of a coherent bundle of radio pulses on the quality of solving the radar frequency resolution problem is substantiated. This solution determines the effectiveness of radar observation of high-speed and maneuvering individual and group aerodynamic objects. The method is based on explicit expressions for calculating the normalized frequency mismatch function of a coherent bundle of radio pulses, taking into account its transformation due to the radial motion of high-speed and maneuvering individual and group aerodynamic objects. The estimation of the potential frequency resolution of bundles with different numbers of radio pulses with typical parameters for a coherent pulse radar is carried out. Possible values of frequency resolution under the additive effect of uncorrelated internal noise of the radar receiver and the multiplicative effect of correlated phase fluctuations of the radar signal are estimated. With an insignificant multiplicative effect of correlated phase fluctuations, a twofold increase in the number of radio pulses in a bundle provides an improvement in the frequency resolution (reduction of the width of the normalized frequency mismatch function) by 100 %. With the predominant multiplicative effect of these fluctuations, a twofold increase in the number of radio pulses results in an improvement in the frequency resolution by about 40 %. The developed method is of great theoretical and practical importance for the further development of the radar theory of high-speed and maneuvering individual and group aerodynamic objects.

We investigate the dynamics and stationary states of a semiconductor exciton–polariton condensate in a double-well potential. We find that upon the population build-up of the polaritons by above-threshold laser pumping, coherence relaxation due to the phase fluctuations in the polaritons drives the system into a stable fixed point corresponding to a self-organized PT-symmetric phase.
