Fog computing emerged as a concept that responds to the requirements of upcoming solutions requiring optimizations primarily in the context of the following QoS parameters: latency, throughput, reliability, security, and network traffic reduction. The rapid development of local computing devices and container-based virtualization enabled the application of fog computing within the IoT environment. However, it is necessary to utilize algorithm-based service scheduling that considers the targeted QoS parameters to optimize the service performance and reach the potential of the fog computing concept. In this paper, we first describe our categorization of IoT services that affects the execution of our scheduling algorithm. Secondly, we propose our scheduling algorithm that considers the context of processing devices, user context, and service context to determine the optimal schedule for the execution of service components across the distributed fog-to-cloud environment. The conducted simulations confirmed the performance of the proposed algorithm and showcased its major contribution—dynamic scheduling, i.e., the responsiveness to the volatile QoS parameters due to changeable network conditions. Thus, we successfully demonstrated that our dynamic scheduling algorithm enhances the efficiency of service performance based on the targeted QoS criteria of the specific service scenario.

In today’s growing cloud world, where users are continuously demanding a large number of services or resources at the same time, cloud providers aim to meet their needs while maintaining service quality, an ideal QoS-based resource provisioning is required. In the consideration of the quality-of-service parameters, it is essential to place a greater emphasis on the scalability attribute, which aids in the design of complex resource provisioning frameworks. This study aims to determine how much work is done in light of scalability as the most important QoS attribute. We first conducted a detailed survey on similar QoS-based resource provisioning proposed frameworks/techniques in this article, which discusses QoS parameters with increasingly growing cloud usage expectations. Second, this paper focuses on scalability as the main QOS characteristic, with types, issues, review questions and research gaps discussed in detail, revealing that less work has been performed thus far. We will try to address scalability and resource provisioning problems with our proposed advance scalable QoS-based resource provisioning framework by integrating new modules resource scheduler, load balancer, resource tracker, and cloud user budget tracker in the resource provisioning process. Cloud providers can easily achieve scalability of resources while performing resource provisioning by integrating the working specialty of these sub modules.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to verify that if applications categories are segmented and resources are allocated based on their specific category, how effective scheduling can be done?. Design/methodology/approach This paper proposes a scheduling framework for IoT application jobs, based upon the Quality of Service (QoS) parameters, which works at coarse grained level to select a fog environment and at fine grained level to select a fog node. Fog environment is chosen considering availability, physical distance, latency and throughput. At fine grained (node selection) level, a probability triad (C, M, G) is anticipated using Naïve Bayes algorithm which provides probability of newly submitted application job to fall in either of the categories Compute (C) intensive, Memory (M) intensive and GPU (G) intensive. Findings Experiment results showed that the proposed framework performed better than traditional cloud and fog computing paradigms. Originality/value The proposed framework combines types of applications and computation capabilities of Fog computing environment, which is not carried out to the best of knowledge of authors.

AbstractEdge computing is a distributed architecture that features decentralized processing of data near the source/devices, where data are being generated. These devices are known as Internet of Things (IoT) devices or edge devices. As we continue to rely on IoT devices, the amount of data generated by the IoT devices have increased significantly due to which it has become infeasible to transfer all the data over to the Cloud for processing. Since these devices contain insufficient storage and processing power, it gives rise to the edge computing paradigm. In edge computing data are processed by edge devices and only the required data are sent to the Cloud to increase robustness and decrease overall network overhead. IoT edge devices are inherently suffering from various security risks and attacks causing a lack of trust between devices. To reduce this malicious behavior, a lightweight trust management model is proposed that maintains the trust of a device and manages the service level trust along with quality of service (QoS). The model calculates the overall trust of the devices by using QoS parameters to evaluate the trust of devices through assigned weights. Trust management models using QoS parameters show improved results that can be helpful in identifying malicious edge nodes in edge computing networks and can be used for industrial purposes.

Cloud computing platforms have been extensively using scientific workflows to execute large-scale applications. However, multiobjective workflow scheduling with scientific standards to optimize QoS parameters is a challenging task. Various metaheuristic scheduling techniques have been proposed to satisfy the QoS parameters like makespan, cost, and resource utilization. Still, traditional metaheuristic approaches are incompetent to maintain agreeable equilibrium between exploration and exploitation of the search space because of their limitations like getting trapped in local optimum value at later evolution stages and higher-dimensional nonlinear optimization problem. This paper proposes an improved Fruit Fly Optimization (IFFO) algorithm to minimize makespan and cost for scheduling multiple workflows in the cloud computing environment. The proposed algorithm is evaluated using CloudSim for scheduling multiple workflows. The comparative results depict that the proposed algorithm IFFO outperforms FFO, PSO, and GA.
