A system of coupled-wave equations for calculating the vector amplitudes of linearly polarized light waves at four-wave mixing by phase-amplitude holographic gratings in a cubic photorefractive semiconductor of an arbitrary cut belonging to the 4 ̅3m symmetry class is presented. The dependences of the intensities of the polarization components of the reversed light wave on the orientation angle for GaAs crystal of (110)-cut are calculated on the basis of the numerical solution of the system of coupled-wave equations. The obtained dependences are compared with the known theoretical and experimental data. It is shown that the best agreement between the results of theoretical modeling and experimental data at calculating the counterpropagating four-wave mixing in GaAs crystal of (110)-cut is achieved if formation of several phase-amplitude holographic gratings is allowed, and the contribution of the photoelastic and inverse piezoelectric effects are taken into account together with absorption of the crystal.

Abstract This paper presented an application of reflective holographic gratings for the measurement of cylindrical curvature. The surface of the fabricated holographic grating was coated with gold by the sputtering method, where it became a reflective holographic grating. The grating was attached to the surface of various radius cylindrical objects. The diffraction pattern produced by the bent grating with different radius was observed by illuminating a laser beam normal to the grating surface. The gratings constant were calculated from the observed diffraction pattern. The relationship between the grating constants and the radius of cylindrical objects was obtained. The grating constant and the reciprocal of the radius of cylindrical objects was a linear relationship, with the least R-square between 0.85-0.97. Moreover, the y-intercept of the relationship between the grating constants and the reciprocal radius was consistent with the grating constant of the non-bended grating. As the radius of the grating approach is infinite, the reciprocal of the radius approaches zero, which is a non-bend grating. We can apply this method to measure the radius of cylindrical objects.

Versatile substituted electron-deficient trichloromethylarenes can easily be synthesized and combined with a Safranine O/triarylalkylborate salt to form a highly efficient three-component photo-initiation system that starts free radical polymerization to finally form holographic gratings with a single-pulsed laser. The mechanism of this photo-initiation most likely relies on an electron transfer from the borate salt into the semi-occupied HOMO of the excited dye molecule Safranine O, which after fragmentation generates an initiating alkyl radical and longer-lived dye radical species. This dye radical is most probably oxidized by the newly introduced trichloromethylarene derivative as an electron acceptor. The two generated radicals from one absorbed photon initiate the photopolymerization and form index gratings in a suitable holographic recording material. This process is purely photonic and does not require further non-photonic post treatments.

We employ two approaches to tune the properties of concurrently inscribed volume polarization and surface relief gratings in nanocomposite thin films containing the azopolymer PAZO (poly[1-4-(3-carboxy-4-hydrophenylazo)benzensulfonamido]-1,2-ethanediyl, sodium salt]) and goethite (α-FeOOH) nanorods. The first one is applied on the stage of sample preparation by varying the concentration of the goethite nanorods from 0% to 15%. Then, different angles between the recording beams are set in the holographic scheme, which allow us to obtain gratings with spatial periods in the range from 0.86 to 2.51 µm. Surface relief modulation close to 300 nm is achieved as well as total diffraction efficiency in the ±1 diffracted orders of more than 50%. The influence of the incorporated goethite nanorods on the properties of both volume birefringence and the surface relief grating are discussed.
