Smartphones were launched in the market as a product in the early 2000’s. Today, less than 20 years later, the smartphone has become one of the most frequently used devices for human contact. The market is saturated, and competition between products has intensified, and it is not difficult to find products that are culled. To be selected by consumers, product differentiation must be outstanding, which is not easy when the basic technology is standardized. Currently, competition in the fields of cameras and displays is intensifying, but it is expected that advanced technology will become commonplace in the near future. There are several ways to increase the competitiveness and differentiation of a product, for example, by considering the technical aspects, or making the personality of the product unique. Consumers communicate with products through materials. The process and selection of materials suitable for the design requirements of a product is a very important component in competitive product manufacturing. The final material selection is performed by dividing the design requirements into function, constraints, personality, objectives, and supporting information aspects, and the selecting materials suitable for each stage. By capturing the overall concept as a function, the processes of selecting materials that meet the constraints, determining the type of material that matches the personality, and using the objectives to obtain the top-ranked materials, the final material suitable for all conditions can be selected by referring to supporting information from the top-ranked materials.

In recent years, Smart Grid have become the center of interest for IT companies and construction companies and various types of Smart Grids have been made currently available on the market. Yet, equipment is costly and it is not easy to convert existing equipment for Smart Grid application as they may require additional resources which could also inflict much costs. The extra costs involving the remodeling of existing housing structure and installment of new equipment can be avoided by using advanced wireless technologies. As an example, this book proposed an indoor localization system that adopts Bluetooth technology and uses RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) values for localization. Researchers have configured a system where the central control device will recognize all other devices or equipment in the system, communicate with each other, and respond to the commands or the information provided. However, despite the efforts of many researchers, existing RSSI-based indoor localization systems do not show a satisfactory level of accuracy such that we have devised a system that traces the trend in the RSSI samples.

This chapter presents the application of the concept of gradual technology to improve and increase the productivity of a workshop for the manufacture of handcrafted furniture owned by a cooperative formed by members of the Guarijía ethnic group, located in San Bernardo, Alamos, Sonora. The production process of the rustic furniture called “stool” was systematized and equipment was designed taking into account basic ergonomic aspects. Production sub-processes of the workshop and equipment were improved, including machinery design, purchase of basic technology, adaptation of electric current, water, and air conditioning systems. The basic inputs for manufacturing the furniture, such as wood and cowhide, were studied to determine whether the production of the stool affected the environment. The operating personnel in charge of the cooperative were trained in the use of the equipment and in the visualization of the improved processes.

The teaching method which teachers adopt for instruction could aggravate students’ performance if successfully employed. However, its use may not be optimum as expected. This study investigated the extent of utilization of teaching methods used for teaching basic technology and the influence of gender on teachers’ extent of utilizing teaching methods to teach basic technology. The study adopted a descriptive research design. One hundred twenty-two basic technology teachers in Nigeria were purposively sampled. The findings of this study were that question and answer, discussion, inquiry, and discovery, field trip, and project and presentation teaching methods are always employed by basic technology teachers in teaching while role-playing, game, and simulation teaching method are moderately utilized for teaching. Also, there was a significant difference between male and female teachers’ extent of utilizing teaching methods to teach basic technology in favor of the male basic technology teachers. The study concluded that appropriate use of teachers’ desired teaching methods could influence instructional delivery. It was thus recommended that educational institutions should organize conferences, seminars, training, and workshops for basic technology teachers on the use of effective teaching methods.

Since 2013, China has been the world’s largest market for industrial robots. Despite the gradual maturity of the industrial robot system, the lagging R&D and backward technology level of industrial robots have led to a strong dependence on the import of core components and key technologies, which to a certain extent has restricted the development and improvement of industrial robots. At present, the “neck problem” in the field of industrial robots in China is not only in the reducer, controller, and servo but also in the basic processing equipment, basic technology, and basic materials. In this paper, we propose measures to improve the “neck problem” of industrial robots to promote the high-quality development of industrial robots in China.

Basic scientific and practical results of the study of possibility of obtaining alternative binders from production wastes to fill man-made voids at underground ore mining are presented. The objective of the study was to determine the technological possibility and economic feasibility of using available low-active substances as substitutes for expensive and scarce cement. It was shown that it is possible to obtain a binder from dolomite wastes, equivalent in properties to cement, which makes it possible to meet the demands of environmentally correct ore mining technologies. It has been established that hardening mixtures based on dolomites and enrichment tailings are only 8-22% inferior in strength to mixtures with standard cement and are suitable without restrictions for the construction of nature protection massifs in mine workings. Recommended activation of wastes increases the strength of the hardening filling mixture by 15-20% in comparison with the basic technology. With additional preparation in activators, a fundamental change in the quality of dolomite products is possible. The use of wastes in the production of a hardening mixture will free up the land occupied by storage facilities and organize the production of competitive products. Alternative binders and inert materials are recommended for use.

Abstract When the ±800kV UHVDC capacity is increased to 10000MW, the transmission current is 5kA and 6.25kA, which will put forward new requirements for the key technology of UHVDC through wall bushing: in UHV level, the key of through wall bushing lies in the research of basic technology of voltage sharing and field sharing. In the case of large current carrying capacity, the key lies in the basic technology research of current sharing and heat sharing. When the DC wall bushing, converter bushing and outgoing line device operate at the rated voltage, the central conductor is heated due to the carrying large DC current. Therefore, the temperature field distribution inside and at the tail of the bushing core is uneven, and the resistivity is the function of temperature, resulting in the change of resistivity with temperature and the change of potential and electric field distribution with resistivity during operation. Therefore, under the above high current operation conditions, in-depth key technology research is required for the design of bushing current carrying device, calculation of internal potential and electric field distribution, voltage sharing, field sharing, current sharing and heat sharing technology. The combined action of electrical and thermal stress will significantly affect the internal electric field distribution of converter transformer core and accelerate the aging rate of core composite insulation material, which introduces new research topic for the key technology of UHVDC converter bushing. The electric field and voltage distribution of UHVDC bushing are theoretically analyzed, the insulation structure is optimized from the aspects of material and structure, and the manufacturing process and the test technology are deeply and systematically studied.
