A typical 1100 MWe pressurized water reactor (PWR) is a second unit installed at the coastal site of Pakistan. In this paper, verification analysis of reactivity control worth by means of rod cluster control assemblies (RCCAs) for startup and operational conditions of this typical nuclear power plant (CNPP) has been performed. Neutronics analysis of fresh core is carried out at beginning of life (BOL) to determine the effect of grey and black control rod clusters on the core reactivity for startup and operating conditions. The combination of WIMS/D4 and CITATION computer codes equipped with JENDL-3.3 data library is used for the first time for core physics calculations of neutronic safety parameters. The differential and integral worth of control banks is derived from the computed results. The effect of control bank clusters on core radial power distribution is studied precisely. Radial power distribution in the core is evaluated for numerous configurations of control banks fully inserted and withdrawn. The accuracy of computed results is validated against the reference values of Nuclear Design Report (NDR) of 1100 MWe typical CNPP. It has been observed that WIMS-D4/CITATION shows its capability to effectively calculate the reactor physics parameters.

In this modern era of digitalization and consumer awareness regarding food safety issues, it has become important to build proper strategies that can ensure the quality and safety of the food items from farm to forks. People love to eat at restaurants not only during business meetings but also with their family for fun and entertainment. The choice and safety of the food is vital to attract the consumer in this competitive environment. Previously, conventional methods have been employed for assurance of quality and safety parameters of the food. But in this modern era, there are many potential alternatives that can serve the purpose rapidly and non-destructively. Hence, this chapter describes the rapid and non-destructive methodologies such as fluorescence, NIRS, MIR, and Raman spectroscopy that can be used for the food safety evaluations.

The risk of explosion becomes significant when, in the industrial field, flammable substances such as gases, vapours, mists, dusts, lint and fibres may be present. If they are present in sufficient quantity, the risk of explosion is imminent. On the other hand, the measure of shutting down the technical equipment, in the context of the presence of explosive atmospheres, is not an acceptable measure in all situations. As examples are the parts of installations that have safety functions: ventilation installations, installations for monitoring the concentration of flammable substances and other safety parameters. Explosion protection of technical equipment shall be evaluated and tested in order to validate it. The testing process of the technical equipment for the purpose of explosion protection certification is situated at the confluence of several engineering fields: mechanical, electrical, chemical, etc. The first part of the paper deals with the risk of explosion and presents the explosion protection of the technical equipment. The systematized presentation of the technical equipment tests is performed in the second part of the paper. Among the conclusions it is mentioned that although the field of tests in explosion atmospheres is an interdisciplinary one, its coherence is ensured by the specific standards.

Background Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) need costly medical care and adequate therapy with expensive medicinal products. Tigerase® is the first biosimilar of dornase alfa, developed by the lead Russian biotechnology company GENERIUM. The aim of the manuscript to present post hoc sub-analysis of patients’ data with cystic fibrosis and severe pulmonary impairment of a larger comparative study (phase III open label, prospective, multi-centre, randomized study (NCT04468100)) of a generic version of recombinant human DNase Tigerase® to the only comparable drug, Pulmozyme® Methods In the analyses included subgroup of 46 severe pulmonary impairment patients with baseline FEV1 level 40–60% of predicted (23 patients in each treatment group) out of 100 patients registered in the study phase III open label, prospective, multi-center, randomized study (NCT04468100), and compared efficacy endpoints (FEV1, FVC, number and time of exacerbations, body weight, St.George’s Respiratory Questionnaire) as well as safety parameters (AEs, SAEs, anti-drug antibody) within 24 treatment weeks. Results All outcomes were comparable among the studied groups. In the efficacy dataset, the similar mean FEV1 and mean FVC changes for 24 weeks of both treatment groups were observed. The groups were also comparable in safety, all the secondary efficacy parameters and immunogenicity. Conclusions The findings from this study support the clinical Tigerase® biosimilarity to Pulmozyme® administered in CF patients with severe impairment of pulmonary function.

An important part of scientific and technical support of civil engineering facilities at a construction stage - evaluation of influence of fluctuations from a designed geometry onto mechanical safety parameters of load-bearing metal structures - is considered. A multi-tier structure (industrial frame tower) is employed to demonstrate main features of such an assessment. Given is an approach to an analysis of as-built documentation and to a choice of most significant fluctuations of structural metal elements from a designed geometry. Effect of erection sequence being taken into consideration, the so-called genetic non-linearity, during computational estimation of a stress-strain state of metal structures mounted with deviations from their design positions is investigated. Results of static and dynamic analyses of designed and as-built (with geometry fluctuations taken into consideration) models of the multi-level industrial frame tower are obtained and compared with each other. Basing on these results, guidelines for computational assessment of effects of fluctuations from a designed geometry onto mechanical safety parameters of similar frame systems are formulated.

Aim: The polyherbal siddha formulation veppampoo Mathirai is effective in regulating blood pressure but its safety is not known. The heavy metal, aflatoxins, pesticide residue, microbial count have not been evaluated so far. The current study evaluated the above parameters. The present study was aimed to evaluate the safety parameters (heavy metal, aflatoxin, pesticide residue and microbial profile) of Veppampoo Mathirai. Materials and Methods: According to AYUSH [Ayurveda, yoga, unani, siddha, naturopathy] Pharmacopoeial laboratory for Indian medicine (PLIM) guidelines, the formulation was evaluated for its safety parameters at Noble research solutions, kolathur, Chennai, accredited with ISO 9001: 2015.Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) was used for testing heavy metals and aflatoxins were tested using Thin layer chromatography(TLC). The Pesticide residues content was estimated by GC/MS while microbial count by pour plate method. Results: The study revealed presence of heavy metals mercury, arsenic, lead and cadmium within the recommended limit as per AYUSH Pharmacopoeial Laboratory for Indian Medicine Guidelines whereas presence of Aflatoxin, pesticide residues and microbes were absent in the sample which showed the formulation Veppampoo Mathirai (VPM) was free from toxicity. Conclusion: VPM showed heavy metal content below the permissible limit as per PLIM guidelines of AYUSH. Aflatoxins and pesticide residue were not detected while the microbes and specific pathogens were absent in the current batch of VPM. Hence, the present study ensures the formulation was safe for therapeutic use.

The microalgae Phaeodactylum tricornutum (PT) contains valuable nutrients such as proteins, polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 PUFA), particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and some docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), carotenoids such as fucoxanthin (FX), and beta-glucans, which may confer health benefits. In a randomized intervention trial involving 22 healthy individuals, we administered for two weeks in a crossover manner the whole biomass of PT (5.3 g/day), or fish oil (FO) containing equal amounts of EPA and DHA (together 300 mg/day). In an additional experiment, sea fish at 185 g/week resulting in a similar EPA and DHA intake was administered in nine individuals. We determined the bioavailability of fatty acids and carotenoids and assessed safety parameters. The intake of PT resulted in a similar increase in the n-3 PUFA and EPA content and a decrease in the PUFA n-6:n-3 ratio in plasma. PT intake caused an uptake of FX that is metabolized to fucoxanthinol (FXOH) and amarouciaxanthin A (AxA). No relevant adverse effects occurred following PT consumption. The study shows that PT is a safe and effective source of EPA and FX—and likely other nutrients—and therefore should be considered as a future sustainable food item.
