Abstract Porous C3N4 (PCN) is favored by researchers because it has more surface active sites, higher specific surface area and stronger light absorption ability than traditional g-C3N4. In this study, cerium dioxide nanoparticles (CeO2-NPs) with mixed valence state of Ce3+ and Ce4+ were doped into the PCN framework by a two-step method. The results indicate that CeO2-NPs are highly dispersed in the PCN framework, which leads to a narrower band gap, a wider range of the light response and an improved the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge in PCN. Moreover, the specific surface area (145.69 m2•g-1) of CeO2-NPs doped PCN is a 25.5 % enhancement than that of PCN (116.13 m2•g-1). In the experiment of photocatalytic selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol, CeO2-NPs doped porous C3N4 exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity, especially Ce-PCN-30. The conversion rate of benzyl alcohol reaches 74.9 % using Ce-PCN-30 as photocatalyst by 8 hours of illumination, which is 25.7 % higher than that of pure porous C3N4. Additionally, CeO2-NPs doped porous C3N4 also exhibits better photocatalytic efficiency for other aromatic alcohols.

Abstract In a vanadium redox flow battery, the traditional polyacrylonitrile based graphite felt (GF) electrode suffers the problems of low electrochemical catalytic activity and low specific surface area. To improve the performance of the GF electrode, we prepared phosphorus and sulphur co-doped reduced graphene oxide (PS-rGO) as catalyst with the simple treatment of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in the mixture of phytic acid and sulfuric acid. The GF electrode modified with PS-rGO (PS-rGO-GF) was characterized by scanning electron microscope, specific surface area, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and charge-discharge tests. The PS-rGO-GF shows enhanced performance toward VO2+/VO2+ redox reaction. The battery with the PS-rGO decorated GF presents an excellent battery performance with the energy efficiency of 81.37 % at the current density of 80 mA cm-2 and the corresponding discharge capacity of 772 mAh due to the high catalytic activity of PS-rGO.

The transition metal-based catalysts for the elimination of greenhouse gases via methane reforming using carbon dioxide are directly or indirectly associated with their distinguishing characteristics such as well-dispersed metal nanoparticles, a higher number of reducible species, suitable metal–support interaction, and high specific surface area. This work presents the insight into catalytic performance as well as catalyst stability of CexSr1−xNiO3 (x = 0.6–1) nanocrystalline perovskites for the production of hydrogen via methane reforming using carbon dioxide. Strontium incorporation enhances specific surface area, the number of reducible species, and nickel dispersion. The catalytic performance results show that CeNiO3 demonstrated higher initial CH4 (54.3%) and CO2 (64.8%) conversions, which dropped down to 13.1 and 19.2% (CH4 conversions) and 26.3 and 32.5% (CO2 conversions) for Ce0.8Sr0.2NiO3 and Ce0.6Sr0.4NiO3, respectively. This drop in catalytic conversions post strontium addition is concomitant with strontium carbonate covering nickel active sites. Moreover, from the durability results, it is obvious that CeNiO3 exhibited deactivation, whereas no deactivation was observed for Ce0.8Sr0.2NiO3 and Ce0.6Sr0.4NiO3. Carbon deposition during the reaction is mainly responsible for catalyst deactivation, and this is further established by characterizing spent catalysts.

The effective conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into cyclic carbonates requires porous materials with high ionic content and large specific surface area. Herein, we developed a new systematic post-synthetic modification strategy for synthesizing imidazolium-based hypercrosslinked ionic polymers (HIPs) with high ionic content (up to 2.1 mmol g−1) and large specific surface area (385 m2 g−1) from porous hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) through addition reaction and quaternization. The obtained HIPs were efficient in CO2 capture and conversion. Under the synergistic effect of high ionic content, large specific surface area, and plentiful micro/mesoporosity, the metal-free catalyst [HCP-CH2-Im][Cl]-1 exhibited quantitative selectivities, high catalytic yields, and good substrate compatibility for the conversion of CO2 into cyclic carbonates at atmospheric pressure (0.1 MPa) in a shorter reaction time in the absence of cocatalysts, solvents, and additives. High catalytic yields (styrene oxide, 120 °C, 8 h, 94% yield; 100 °C, 20 h, 93% yield) can be achieved by appropriately extending the reaction times at low temperature, and the reaction times are shorter than other porous materials under the same conditions. This work provides a new strategy for synthesizing an efficient metal-free heterogeneous catalyst with high ionic content and a large specific surface area from HCPs for the conversion of CO2 into cyclic carbonates. It also demonstrates that the ionic content and specific surface area must be coordinated to obtain high catalytic activity for CO2 cycloaddition reaction.

Abstract Construction of metal selenides with a large specific surface area and a hollow structure is one of the effective methods to improve the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. However, the nano-material easily agglomerates due to the lack of support, resulting in the loss of electrochemical performance. Herein, we successfully design a three-dimensional graphene (3DG) encapsulation-protected hollow nanoboxes (CoSe2-SnSe2) composite aerogel (3DG/CoSe2-SnSe2) via a co-precipitation method coupled with self-assembly route, followed by a high temperature selenidation strategy. The obtained aerogel possesses porous 3DG conductive network, large specific surface area and plenty of reactive active sites. It could be used as a flexible and binder-free electrode after a facile mechanical compression process, which provided a high specific capacitance of 460 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1, good rate capability of 212.7 F g-1 at 10 A g-1, and excellent cycle stability due to the fast electron/ion transfer and electrolyte diffusion. With the as-prepared 3DG/CoSe2-SnSe2 as positive electrodes and the AC (activated carbon) as negative electrodes, an asymmetric supercapacitor (3DG/CoSe2-SnSe2//AC) was fabricated, which delivered a high specific capacity of 38 F g-1 at 1A g-1 and an energy density of 11.89 W h kg-1 at 749.9 W kg-1, as well as a capacitance retention of 91.1% after 3000 cycles. This work provides a new method for preparing electrode material.

In this study, the dewatered sludge from the sewage plant and the open-hearth steel slag of the steel plant are used as raw materials. As two wastes, they were mixed and pyrolyzed to prepare a composite absorbent. Further, the adsorption mechanism of the adsorbent to chromium ions in the sewage is explored. The pyrolysis reaction behavior of sludge mixed with steel slag was studied by the thermogravimetric analysis technology. SEM, BET, and XPS were used to analyze the specific surface area, pore size distribution, and pore structure characteristics of pyrolysis products, respectively. Moreover, a comprehensive analysis of the adsorbent was carried out for the adsorption mechanism of hexavalent chromium ions. The results show that the addition of steel slag promotes the pyrolysis of the sludge in each stage. When the content of steel slag is 80%, the increases of reaction rate are the most obvious with the largest increase of weight loss rate in each stage. The SEM results show that the enrichment of sludge on metal oxides is enhanced in the high-temperature range (600–700°C). Besides, when the content of steel slag is 40–60%, the mixture’s growth rate of the specific surface area can reach 600% and the growth rate of total pore volume can reach 350% (the situations of sludge as the baseline). Regarding the measurement of Cr(VI), the adsorption rate of the steel-slag solution is 50.93% and that of the sludge solution is 69%. However, the adsorption rate can be increased to 95% when the steel slag and sludge were mixed as an adsorption solution. In conclusion, the adsorption mechanism of Cr(VI) by additives is controlled by both physical and chemical processes. The present study provides a theoretical basis and technical support for the scientific and reasonable utilization of sludge and steel slag.

We report the facile preparation of β-Ni(OH)2 particles by etching a NiAl-layered double hydroxides (NiAl-LDHs) precursor with KOH solution. The amphoteric Al3+ ions in LDHs crystal were selectively dissolved out by KOH solution and LDHs crystals were proposed to be in situ topologically transformed to form β-Ni(OH)2. Alkaline concentration has a great influence on the structure, morphology, specific surface area, and porous structure of the resulting samples. Compared to LDHs precursor and β-Ni(OH)2 prepared by a precipitation reaction, the sample etched in 10 M KOH solution has enhanced specific capacitance (829 F/g at 1 A/g), high rate capability (capacitance retention 57.3% with current density 8 A/g), and good charge/discharge stability. We suggested that the high accessible specific surface area and appropriate porous structure, which is conducive to full contact between active material and electrolyte, can improve the utilization rate of the active material to increase the rate capacity of the 10 M KOH-etched sample.

The article discusses significance of the development of activated carbon materials with a high specific surface area and high porosity. The features of the course of chemical activation and the factors influencing the characteristics of the obtained material have been established. The main stages of the activation of the carbon material, including the preliminary raw carbon material carbonization, its alkaline activation, and the post-processing of the created material, have been determined. The mutual influence of temperature and flow rate of an inert gas on the characteristics of a carbon material obtained with a BET specific surface in the range of 2550–2700 m2/g is experimentally investigated. The analysis of the obtained results has been carried out. Recommendations are given for reducing ambiguity and uncertainty during the transition from laboratory research to pilot production. The resulting activated carbon material can be used as a sorbent in gas purification systems, gas accumulators and for solving various environmental problems.
