In a wireless sensor network, the sensing and data transmission for sensors will cause energy depletion, which will lead to the inability to complete the tasks. To solve this problem, wireless rechargeable sensor networks (WRSNs) have been developed to extend the lifetime of the entire network. In WRSNs, a mobile charging robot (MR) is responsible for wireless charging each sensor battery and collecting sensory data from the sensor simultaneously. Thereby, MR needs to traverse along a designed path for all sensors in the WRSNs. In this paper, dual-side charging strategies are proposed for MR traversal planning, which minimize the MR traversal path length, energy consumption, and completion time. Based on MR dual-side charging, neighboring sensors in both sides of a designated path can be wirelessly charged by MR and sensory data sent to MR simultaneously. The constructed path is based on the power diagram according to the remaining power of sensors and distances among sensors in a WRSN. While the power diagram is built, charging strategies with dual-side charging capability are determined accordingly. In addition, a clustering-based approach is proposed to improve minimizing MR moving total distance, saving charging energy and total completion time in a round. Moreover, integrated strategies that apply a clustering-based approach on the dual-side charging strategies are presented in WRSNs. The simulation results show that, no matter with or without clustering, the performances of proposed strategies outperform the baseline strategies in three respects, energy saving, total distance reduced, and completion time reduced for MR in WSRNs.

With the popularization of electric private cars and the increase of charging facilities in residential areas, disorderly charging will affect the power supply efficiency of their distribution transformers and the quality of electricity used by users in residential areas. In severe cases, it may even cause vibration of the power grid, causing serious three-phase imbalance problems such as single-phase burnout of transformers or insulation breakdown of household appliances. This paper analyzes the influencing factors of the unbalanced operation of each phase of the distribution transformer and the electrical load characteristics of typical residential areas. Based on the photovoltaic output of the station area, the charging and discharging capacity of the energy storage system, and the orderly charging plan of residential electric vehicles, a local orderly charging strategy for electric vehicles based on energy routers under the three-phase balance of the residential area is proposed. This strategy can realize the three-phase balance control of the distribution transformer. The effectiveness of the method is verified by a typical scenario example. The control method is changed to minimize the three-phase imbalance in residential areas and improve the low utilization rate of the distribution network and the comprehensive utilization efficiency of adjustable resources in residential areas.

The transition from diesel-driven urban freight transport towards more electric urban freight transport turns out to be challenging in practice. A major concern for transport operators is how to find a reliable charging strategy for a larger electric vehicle fleet that provides flexibility based on different daily mission profiles within that fleet, while also minimizing costs. This contribution assesses the trade-off between a large battery pack and opportunity charging with regard to costs and operational constraints. Based on a case study with 39 electric freight vehicles that have been used by a parcel delivery company and a courier company in daily operations for over a year, various scenarios have been analyzed by means of a TCO analysis. Although a large battery allows for more flexibility in planning, opportunity charging can provide a feasible alternative, especially in the case of varying mission profiles. Additional personnel costs during opportunity charging can be avoided as much as possible by a well-integrated charging strategy, which can be realized by a reservation system that minimizes the risk of occupied charging stations and a dense network of charging stations.

PV in combination with Li-ion storage systems can make a major contribution to the energy transition. However, large-scale application will only take place when the systems are economically viable. The profitability of such a system is not only influenced by the investment costs and economic framework conditions, but also by the technical parameters of the storage systems. The paper presents a methodology for the simulation and sizing of PV home storage systems that takes into account the efficiency of the storage systems (AC, DC standby consumption and peripheral consumption, battery efficiency and inverter efficiency), the aging of the components (cyclic and calendar battery aging and PV degradation), and the intelligence of the charging strategy. The developed methodology can be applied to all regions. In this paper, a sensitivity analysis of the influence of the mentioned technical parameters on the dimensioning and profitability of a PV home storage is performed. The calculation is done for Germany. Especially, battery aging, battery inverter efficiency and a charging strategy to avoid calendar aging have a decisive influence. While optimization of most other technical parameters only leads to a cost reduction of 1–3%, more efficient inverters can save up to 5%. Even higher cost reductions (more than 20%) can only be achieved using batteries that age less, especially batteries that are less sensitive to calendar aging. In individual cases, a small improvement in the efficiency of the storage system can also lead to higher costs. This is for example the case when smaller batteries are combined with a large PV system and the battery is used more due to the higher efficiency. This results in faster ageing and thus earlier replacement of the battery. In addition, the paper includes a detailed literature overview on PV home storage system sizing and simulation.

Electric cars sales have been rising almost steadily over the past decade. Uncontrolled charging has recently emerged as the main detrimental factor to this otherwise environmentally friendly and paradigm shifting technology due to the incurred impact on the energy grid. In addition, people are usually hesitant in allowing their vehicles to be controlled by external units; therefore, controlled charging strategies that offer users the option to have some control over their vehicles seems to be a sensible choice moving towards a gasoline-free vehicles market. This work investigated two price-sensitive charging strategies that allowed users to control the charging of their vehicle in order to receive cost benefits. These strategies were of a parametric nature; thus, the analysis focused on providing useful rules of thumb to guide users in choosing the most suitable strategy and the relevant parameters according to their driving profiles. The results show that when driving less than 40 km/h on average and employing a price-sensitive charging strategy with the proposed optimized parameters, electric car users may obtain 30–40% of the running cost reduction.
